Several hit singles, phenomenal promotion, more 'cool' than Celine and last but not the least, the album is actually very good

Alex, Celine's album maybe good but it never got the radio airplay, tv play and the hype that "As I Am" got.

Alicia Keys has moderate talent nothing special in my opinion.....I'd never buy one of her CD's.......

 

AS I AM was so successful for two key reasons:

 

Alicia Keys is fairly new in her recording career (this is only her third CD.....look where Celine was on her third English CD "The colour of my love"---she was just starting to really take off in America/Europe and eventually The Colour of My Love sold 16 million copies with two HUGE singles)

 

Secondly, Clive Davis. Enough said.

celine's career pattern doesn't apply for everybody. mariah was more successful in the beginning of her career. alicia is still at the height of her popularity. clive definitely helped to boost and launch her career, but that can be said for pretty much any artist out there. that is how the music industry works, it's not just talent but politics and promotion, luck. she's proven to have a strong and loyal fanbase with consistently successful releases.

 

and actually alicia debuted in 2001 so she's not that new. she's almost closing in on a decade. not everyone releases 2 albums a year.

 

edit: OMG HAHA mariah's way out of the top ten of the year end chart. I remember reading some other sources which put her much higher..but then again those were in progress anyway.

 

so I guess this list doesn't include the sales of celine's album from 2007 right? just 2008? does anyone know the precise total figure for taking chances in the US as of now?

Mariah didn't sell that much more for having some hit singles!

why a "moderate" talent? she writes her songs, she plays piano, she can sing live, she's a producer and arranger. the only talent God didn't give her is probably dancing LOL. as celine said awhile back, Alicia Keys is a complete artist. how i wish i have at least half of this woman's talent.

 

going back to Taking Chances' sales, does this mean we should add her total sales last year (2007) to her sales this year (982,684) to come up with her sales all in all in the US? i'm kinda confused... if she sold 982,684 this year alone, then her sales during the last weeks of 2007 weren't included here?

taking chances is platinum. as sad as I am with celine's decline from the mainstream, we should be proud of her sales considering how insanely low currently "hot" acts like rihanna's album sales are. celine is doing fine and she will always have her core base who will buy any album she puts out

 

and @ dhena that was what I was wondering in my last post. I thought this 980k figure was close to the overall figure I saw awhile back..but im pretty sure this list only includes 2008 sales right? so if that is how it is shouldn't her total taking chances sales in the US (07 and 08) be over 1 million already?

yeah... and she debuted with 214,000 (not sure though), so if you're gonna add this to her 982,684 sales this year, then she sold almost 1.2M copies in America, AND of course we should add her sales during the last few weeks of 2007 (she sold above 100k in i guess 3 more weeks after her debut). so is it safe to say she sold at least 1.5M in the US? LOL ok i'm paranoid

wait a minute......I think we might be mixed up here. cos I read something like billboard's year end chart doesn't actually include the entire year? like december? so the 2008 year end does include the december 07 sales?

Interestingly, albums at the peak of their popularity at the time of the November/December chart-year cutoff many times end up ranked lower than one would expect on a year-end tally, yet are ranked on the following year's chart as well, as their cumulative points are split between the two chart years.

that's weird. if that's the case, they should not release a year-end ranking of the top selling albums of the year this early. Britney Spears could easily enter that chart when her album comes out. so her sales would be included in next year's year-end countdown? hmmm...

Is everyone familiar with another site called worldwidealbums.net? On this site, cd sales information is presented based on the year a cd appeared, but you can also see sales to date. Taking Chances, for example, is grouped with albums released in 2007, but it ranks 18th, from the day it was released to the present, with approximately 3,150,000 in sales worldwide. This gives a better picture of how an album has performed over time. Billboard year-end charts are fun to look at, but the 12-month framework hides the complete picture.

 

For compare and contrast fans, it's interesting to see how Mariah's E=MC2 performed well in the US this year, but not particularly well worldwide (<2 million copies). On the other hand, Madonna's album is now ranked third worldwide for the year (>3 million), but it didn't do well in the US, at lease not relatively speaking.

Anyway, in a sense "All The Way" was re-released in the UK this year with special packaging and only priced at £5 so not surprising its sold so well to be honest.
