WERE THERE. Paris Match attended Céline Dion's sixth concert at the Plenitude Arena in Nanterre. A truly spectacular show, more thrilling than ever.

Was it emotion or a playful twinkle in her eye, as she wanted us to believe? Throughout the entire show, Céline Dion kept wiping away a tear from the corner of her right eye. "I have a little eye that's watering, it's very emotional," she joked.

Whether it was coquettishness or not, the emotion was truly palpable at this sixth concert at the Plenitude Arena in Nanterre. The star was far more daring, adventurous, and less constrained than during her first Parisian concert, which we attended. Rather static on September 12th, she constantly commanded the stage this Friday, September 25th, doing more than just a few dance steps, even kneeling at times and then rising just as quickly. While Céline's lyrics remain the same throughout her concerts—about her illness, which she has come to terms with, about the stars one must aim for and reach, about the impossible that is always possible—her show was more fluid.

The audience's anticipation, however, remained unchanged. It reached its peak when Céline took the stage at 8:34 p.m. (a habit: she always starts her show after 8:30 p.m.), just as Laeticia Hallyday made an appearance on the balcony, accompanied by Kev Adams. Bad timing. "I'm interested in Rihanna," my neighbor murmured as the theater plunged into darkness and froze at the first notes of "On ne change pas." On stage, Céline appeared, dressed in a sumptuous black gown, a new creation from the House of Dior: "Paris, my beloved, there's nothing to be done, we always come back," she smiled.

Céline seems finally free to savor her pleasure, and this is also true for her musical director, Scott Price, who is sometimes seen singing with her at the piano. A bow at the end of "On ne change pas" (she will do several) and she launches into "Destin." The audience is on its feet, moving with her. A pause in French, then in English to thank her fans, and she follows with an English song, "Because You Loved Me." The fourth song, "Encore un soir," is the most moving.

On stage, Céline Dion smiles a lot

The only time Céline seemed to falter. She wiped away a tear as soon as the first notes of that very special song began (Coquette in the Eye, again?)—a song she had implored Jean-Jacques Goldman to compose for her while her husband, René Angélil, was battling his final cancer. “One more night, one more hour…” René had heard it before he died; he had loved it… On stage, Céline smiled a lot. She looked beautiful, much less harsh than on the first night when she had appeared very pale, her features drawn. Was it the Parisian air? The outpouring of love from her fans outside the Royal Monceau? The voices of the 33,000 spectators at the Plénitude Arena singing along to these familiar tunes? Or perhaps warmer makeup, less cold lighting? She seemed so happy that sometimes it felt as if she were skipping after each song… as if she couldn't wait to start the next one.

Each song feels like a victory savored; she clenches her fists, looks up at the sky as if to thank it. During "My Heart Will Go On," the song from Titanic, as her voice dips slightly, she places a hand on her stomach as if to breathe more easily. So, every time she encourages the audience to sing along, we worry. We're wrong. Because Céline immediately reassures us, launching into grand and breathtaking vocal performances. The one during "Power of Love" leaves the room spellbound.

Her voice has changed a little, certainly, but her soaring vocals are indeed memorable. You can feel her relief, her genuine happiness. At the end of the incredibly rhythmic "J'irai où tu iras," which she sings as a duet with Jordan Levesque, one of her backup singers, she lets out a "YESSS!" On her 15-centimeter heels, she takes on a series of ballads in a disco-funk medley with a very seventies-style staging. When she reprises "I'm Alive," she's once again on the verge of tears. Alive she is! And very smiley too. You can tell she's having fun, savoring every moment… With each ovation, she sweeps the room with a long, tender gaze, clasping her hands to her face. More emotion: "You know," she says, "we created this show together tonight."

The show ended, and the crowd chanted her name, not really expecting an encore. To the delight of the audience, Céline nevertheless returned and sang "All by Myself" and then "Pour que tu m'aimes encore".

This last song is her sister and godmother Claudette's favorite, and also René's, who had included it among the three songs he wanted sung at his funeral. The audience erupts, as if in communion. You can feel that Céline is finding it hard to leave tonight. We are too. A glance at the balcony and oh, look, we've lost Laeticia Hallyday. What a shame, we'll never know if she crossed paths with Laura Smet, who had also chosen this evening to applaud Céline. That's the only (tiny) regret of the evening because we absolutely LOVED it.

I agree. It came back because in 2011 that show it sounded great with an orchestra… now it can retire again.

She’s on absolute fire tonight. Even the heady mixed high notes are getting their weight and power back, were it not for the lowered keys and improved tone id genuinely think that this was the shows from Bercy in 2017
