"I Am: Celine Dion" documentary - Official Topic

One thing that has really affected me through all this is the enjoyment I would get from watching back her performances, be it on YouTube or DVD etc, and of course seeing her live (as awesome as she always was), because she always seemed to just be so present in the moment, loving every moment and giving everything she had but now I wonder just how much of that was “acting” in a way to get through each show and did she deep down just want each show to be over or dread the show starting. I can’t help but replay over in my head the amount of times she would say “I don’t want this night to end” or “I don’t want to go home”. Was any of that true? I guess it was on the nights when she felt good and strong 😢

I just feel the whole thing has a slight melancholy about it now. I would really like if she elaborated a bit more on the “17 years”. Was it extremely sporadic, just certain times that she can pinpoint now knowing her diagnosis or was this really all a huge struggle and weight on her shoulders for all this time and for all those 1000’s of shows? No doubt, if the latter is the case then I’m amazed but then she always did amaze me and I hope I can get back to feeling that way when watching her previous live performances etc.

For me when she’s apologising for “lying” whether that’s the right word or not, besides re the excuses for cancelling show but I feel as though this is exactly what she’s referring to.

Exactly. Yes it is not a normal story but just because he met her at 12 and then they fell in love does not mean he "groomed" her. No wonder she never reads any thing. How sad that people can't see the love and respect they shared and focus on that.

She does not owe anyone but I do wish she would really address this, if for nothing more than for her sons who will have this follow them always.

That's exactly my feeling about this and I can only imagine how much it hurts her, and her kids, to have people continually assume the worst.

And on the one hand, I wish she'd address it to put all these suspicions to bed. (Yes, she had previously in her book, but clearly that fell on deaf ears or many are simply not aware of what she had to say at the time).

But on the other, she really shouldn't have to do that; like you say, she doesn't own anyone. And I fear if she does, many will just dismiss (again) what she has to say and call it Stockholm syndrome.

So it just feels like whatever she does or doesn't do, it's a lost cause.

that’s exactly what I was missing from the documentary. I wish they Included how Celine elaborates a little more in-depth about those situations on stage. I feel like those interviews were more detailed than the doc itself. She could’ve elaborated on that moment in Ottawa where she sang A Vous and couldn’t sing anymore, but then returned and flawlessly continued. I really wonder what happened back stage. She could have talked about this.

Dang. Now it makes you want to know when the problem with her leg was. Think she should keep that to herself and let Celine be the one to give any details. The timeline of how the symptoms progressed is confusing.

Celine probably had a Charlie horse in her leg back in 1995 ; Oh Claudette.

This is such a wonderful era we are experiencing... we have never been prouder of Celine, her resilience, spirit, determination... she showed her vulnerable side to the world and the outpouring of love has been unprecedented... Importantly, we finally have reason to hope that she will come back to do what she loves the most. We finally have things to anticipate, from surprise appearances to events to interviews and promotional activities. What a journey we've all been through the past 4 years. And look at us now! I have a very positive feeling about the rest of 2024, I believe big things will happen that will put a smile on our faces.

Thinking about the huge reception of I am: Celine Dion, I often wonder...

Had Sony thought of releasing an Album special on Prime Video or some other streaming service, before its release, would an album such as, Courage, performed better?

Maybe not on the level of JLo's concept album, but something visual, indepth and honest that ties in concert footage or at least, videos from the album..

There were so many videos/teasers filmed but I often wonder because her core audience, though diverse, is heavily skewed in the Boomer crowd at least in NA, maybe exposure from a streaming service might've helped drive more sales. Working in the media industry, i know that older or less savvy consumers often rely on the TV and services such as Roku to access content. Launching something on Prime would've made it easier for recommendations to be front and center and more focused to a lot more people interested in Celine. YouTube is great but for many people, its still a 2nd instinct medium by its vast range of content than something that can simplify and recommend titles and types to a finely curated list such as Prime Video.

Not to mention that concerts are simply unaffordable for many average people and watching something at the theatre or on a streaming service is often more feasible. You would think they would capitalize on providing the most optimal amount of exposure as they could to promote the album, and not just driving sales only at concerts even though they are profitable.

Had René been alive and well enough to manage Céline, I think he would definitely have streaming as part of his strategy since they used Broadcast in the past to get her albums the reception they needed but thinking about it now. I don't think there was enough strategists on the team who really thought out how the album was going out into the world and on reflection, I think Céline was focused on her wellness, happiness and fight to save her gift, to really be hands on with how an album was promoted. Céline had great ideas about her creativity, especially releasing fashion oriented videos and focusing on that side, but translating that into promoting her album didn't seem to really connect from the record label side.

Didn't plan on writing all this but, I guess I have a lot of observations i wanted to share. lol. I do hope they're realizing that maybe taking a page out of Beyoncé's marketing book might help her going forward. I think with Céline's challenges, It might also make the most sense to promote her albums using the medium of video without Céline actually physically going all over the world. The world should come to Céline and see the world from her eyes, just like they do Bey.

I appreciate how this documentary is helping to shift the perception of Celine away from being known mostly as a “kooky aunt.” For years, my friends would just send me clips of Celine singing “peanut butter jelly” and it felt like Celine was being reduced to a goofball rather than being revered as one of the greatest singers of all time.

In the documentary, people are seeing a grounded, intelligent, calm, and strong (and, yes, still funny) woman. And it’s going to impact her music legacy as well as a more serious artist.

Presumably because of this tweet (and a bunch of anti-vaxxers latching onto it) -

They were there with her at the draft last night (per John K’s LVRJ article).

(Btw I’m a little surprised Celine didn’t mind that scene staying in… her kids being served milkshakes on a silver platter by a butler 🫢)

Hey she's rich - she earned every penny! There's no need to hide that. She is very grateful for what she has. I would have a butler too if I could afford it!

Sure, but she'd know (I'd hope) how it would be perceived, yet she didn't ask to cut any of it. Speaks to her security in who she is and willingness to acknowledge the privilege she has.

The message needs to be drilled into the anti-vaxxers heads that this is a neurological disease she’s been dealing with for 17 years. Granted, they’re usually a bunch of crazy people.

It also freaks me out that some other sad people imply she’s getting what she deserves because of the “dark children’s clothing” she was a part of. Humans are scary sometimes and social media really reveals a dark underbelly of humanity.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. That children’s clothing line was the worst thing she associated herself with. I knew it would be bad for her when I first saw the video.

Did she actually know what the brand was representing “new world order” etc… I’m not sure she did.

The video was fun for us fans but it was clearly going to cause problems with conspiracy theorists. I just wish it never happened. Even the designers were very odd…

Conspiracy theorists are prime examples of the lowest levels humans can reach.

A bunch of deluded morons with no self-esteem who try to prove that they matter enough to be the targets of a conspiracy. Through validating their theories, they attempt to validate themselves. It is important for them to say that SPS happened to Celine due to the COVID-19 vaccines, because this way they validate their self-worth in two ways: 1) they've been right all along 2) they're also important enough to be targeted by some mastermind.

Really, behind all this, there is only narcissism and a deeply rooted sense of failure.

100% this. It was the worst decision and I’m not a conspiracy theorist.

That was the first time she had to learn about bad publicity without Rene helping her with optics.
