I can be wrong, but I think René never let Celine focus on anything other than music. I believe she always received this type of invitation, but I think he declined every time. She was always busy with concerts, recordings, interviews and could never focus on anything else like fashion or movies.

After his death, we all saw how she threw herself into the fashion world.

The perfume business took part in the 2000's, when she was relatively stable in Vegas, and I'm sure that apart from some photo and commercial shoots, she didn't have to much about it.

 

If you look at her tour dates of the 90s on wiki and take into account all the tv shows, radio, news paper interviews, award shows etc etc she did... It's no wonder she wanted a break in 2000 and she didn't cave in under all that schedule!

I strongly disagree. He had a tight grip on the reins and was laser focused on the constant rotation of French album, French tour, English album, English tour, repeat. There was no time for her to have hobbies or interests *other than fashion* because shopping was her only time away from the grinding schedule (while I presume he was gambling lol)

Well, there's a difference between putting a career first (and first to an extreme degree, even) and imaginging Rene literally forcing her to decline invitations to the MET Gala, or actively discouraging her from pursuing her interests a la overcontroling husband and manager. Which is more of what I was responding to. And certainly after the 90s, her music career wasn't so full throttle.

I don’t think he restricted her decisions. She just didn’t want to do anything other than singing and trusted him completely, and he made the decision that appeared right to him.

It probably was most profitable, that’s why he focused on that. I guess he also wanted to ensure that Celine will end up as an established singer.

What if Celine goes to the MET Gala this year? She's shown herself publicly several times now and at a major event. There's a chance she can be invited.

 

Celine doesn't need to do a lot of public appearances, just the right ones that have the most public attention.

 

This would be a great place to show herself again.

Nah. I hope not. People are literally struggling, and the last thing they want to see is some rich celebrities attending exclusive events. Celine didn’t work as this type of celebrity, and just thinking about the hate that formed around last year’s Met makes me not want to see Celine there.

Though I agree with you in logic, at least the MET raises funds for the museum, whereas if Celine attended the Grammys ( which she did) and the Elie Saab fashion show ( which she did) those events in my opinion support your argument more.
