Of course but Celine still ends up selling as many albums (thanks to physical units) as the high-streaming artists. And with very limited promo cost and music video budget. Edited by Xpresso

LOL

I didn't know a song was good only if fans loved it.

But in all fairness, she doesn't have a lot of fans then because again numbers are very bad! :)

Whether it's streams or itunes or views on YT , it's a disaster. Nobody cares beside 10 fans on this forum -)

Even Sony is trying to minimize the flop by saying "it's a gift to the fans".... just like other pop singers say it was a "buzz single" to justify a flop.

Sony is not gonna fool anybody by saying it's not sent to radios or there won't be any music video ... they are telling us that what's they do when it's an official single maybe? haha... what a joke!

If the studio version of FOMO was actually sent to radio stations how do you explain that when I tried get the biggest radio stations here in Quebec such as Rouge FM to play FOMO, they all told me they weren't allowed to play it since it has not been sent to radios ? I started requesting FOMO when the studio version was released on June 28th and all the radio stations I've contacted gave me the same answer.

Exactly. Unlike isurrender commented, Sony can't even try to minimize the flop as he said because FOMO was NOT sent to radios, which means it's not an official single (at least for now). Edited by Xpresso

She wants fomo to be a flop so bad ueheuheueh when we definitely know it would be a hit with proper promo....

I think we should be happy with whatever she gives to us and goodbye. No high expectations anymore. Cause like somebody says is the same cycle every time.

At this point she’s doing what she wants NOT what we want. It’s the truth. If you are fine with it good and if not she’s Céline Dion and like she always says “she has nothing to prove”.

I’ve given the song a few more listens. I still enjoy it, but it’s nothing iconic. The bridge is bland and lazily written, and the verses are far too slow. Plus, there is no major crescendo. Furthermore, the song should end on a “BANG” and not a slow fade out. I also find the mixing of the vocals and the instrumentation to be unbalanced.

I will continue to listen to it and enjoy it, but it’s nothing worthy of being a “comeback hit a la Cher.”

It’s ok to say that Celine’s core audience don’t stream but what of the general public? Do they see new music from her on playlists and just ignore it? Seems so. A real shame after the exposure “Ashes” gave her.

I think FOMO will get the exposure it deserves with the London show 😊 (and then hopefully when the European dates for the tour are known).

But the song definitely needs a music video!

Live performances and lyric videos generally don't get as many views. The draw is official music videos.

Maybe they've done things backwards because it wasn't planned? Idk, maybe if they had released the studio version with the lyric video at least a week before the live performance the song would have done better in streams.

Whatever the case, it's pretty obvious to me this is a song that neither Sony nor Celine are all that interested in promoting or putting all that much effort into making it succeed. But who knows, maybe they'll release a mv for it this Friday. Or better yet release a new song that will be performed at BST (hopefully the studio version before the live).

actually i know QUITE A BIT people who also think the SAME EXACT THING when it comes to celines music reportoire, they also think that celine has NOT RELEASED NEW MUSIC IN YEARS!!

in fact there are still LOTS of people in this world who can only name a FEW of her hit songs, especially "my heart will go on" of course, (or AKA "the titanic song",) & maybe a few others such as "because you loved me", "power of love", etc...

BUUUUT they can not name anything FROM RECENT YEARS, which is such a shame cause celine has released LOTS of great songs since the 90s, but most of the general public do not know of most of them!! 😱😱😨😨😳😳

Yes, these huge spans without music...I think even Barbra Streisand releases new music more frequently than a Céline over the past 20 years.

I think the problem is because she takes so long...the edginess wears off. She “catches up with the times” musically, but then waits to release it and it gets stale.

I think FOMO (with a music video) would’ve blasted to the top in 2017...but it’s too late right now in 2019 even. The song sounds like it’s trying a bit too hard to be current.

That seems to be her and her teams way of doing things. I can't believe that after all these years in the business she and they never learn how to keep up with what's working NOW (be it song choice, sound or marketing strategy).

I'll say one last thing, while I really love the song and the fact that Celine continues to add different genres to her repertoire, it's not one I'll have on repeat indefinitely. Some here have mentioned that it's generic and tbh I think all EDM songs sound the same :|

This is a hype song, a fun summer track, nothing more and maybe Celine and team know this isn't "it". Now, had the song gone viral then no doubt they'd amp up the promotion for it.

There is one thing I don't get. Why are radio stations not allowed to play songs that haven't been sent to them?

That's not what I said.

First, Quebec is a different case as she will always get some kind of radio exposure there.

What I was saying is that Sony said they won't send the song to radios. Ok... but are they really make us believe they usually send her songs to radios when "officially released"? Maybe in Quebec , but they don't in other countries.

When it comes to your comment, that's weird... radio can play whatever they pick, even if not officially sent. Especially in Quebec , with Céline.

FOMO has been heard on a french radio for example.

Yes, songs have to be released officially aka made available for download/play by the record company. It’s just how it always worked and still works (unfortunately). Radio stations can’t just play what they want (that’s why you hear the same songs over and over and over again).

It still surprises me that people get so shocked because Celine's singles don't do well. Veteran artists don't have hit singles anymore in the streaming era, is it so hard to understand? Madonna performed Future in the most watched tv show (Eurovision) and the audio has 1.8M views after 1 and half month. Look at the streaming numbers of latest singles by Mariah, Christina, Madonna... Celine will promote the first actual single closer to the album release to help sell the album, but don't expect hit singles, is not going to happen no matter how good the song is or how hard Sony tries.

This is the plain truth. All the older artists are now outdated. Even if their fanbase massively downloads/streams their songs, it will not stopping it from having poor performance. The only country where Celine can have a viable radio performance and good streaming results is France. This will happen with a french song, though. EUS is an example to that. An entire album written by JJG would be huge and the singles would dominate the radios and charts, I think.

Actually, radio stations can't just play whatever they want. The song has to be released by the label for stations to play it, although some stations break the rules but if they want a good relationship with the record label they will usually play by the rules.

If as much effort went into the promotion as choosing the hideous outfits in sure she’d have a hit. Pepe is a terrible influence. Concentrate on the music opposed to silly outfits

That's it. Perfectly said.

This hole discussion is getting too boring. Really, if someone wants big numbers should go follow Taylor Swift and not an artist from the 80's/90's like Celine.

Actually, radio stations can technically play whatever they want - as long as they’ll profit off it. They don’t need record companies to release new music. For example, Taylor Swift’s last album had multiple entries on the Hot 100 in its first few weeks. Why? Cuz radio stations were playing multiple tracks from the album.

This is where ageism comes into play. Radio stations stay away from older artists like Celine because nobody ain’t checking for Celine on the radio. Today’s youth only want to hear current artists on the radio. And that’s where radio stations make their money - playing the current music. An older artist has no chance of being played on the radio anymore. Sad but true.

Actually the multiple entries on the Hot 100 come mainly from streaming the entire album the first week it comes out. And obviously the favorite tracks get tons more streaming (enough to enter the charts). Radio stations might play a few songs from an album as a promo thing but they won't play non singles for very long. Edited by Xpresso

Coulda Woulda Shoulda (yes!) was playef by a popular Swedish station over and over again back in the OH era. Did Sony send that track to the radios?? It seems that radio can play songs not sent to them - or was it only back then?

Was it a single in Sweden? That's interesting. I remember there was a Toronto radio station where listeners called in and shared some difficult times in their lives and the host would then pick a song which wasn't always an official single. She actually played With This Tear a few times although it was not on that station's regular playlist. Maybe the record labels make such deals for future radio support (for that same artist or others on the label)… That's a long time ago, now I'm not sure if they even do this anymore.

Sony, it's time for a FOMO radio deal! :D

they should have hurried up and release Ashes as the first single, and then the entire new album after to use the momentum Deadpool and Ryan Raynolds started. Too bad they waited for one more year and wasted the opportunity... again...

This is the sad truth which is why we should just enjoy the new music instead of breaking our heads getting angry or wondering why it isn't being successful. It happens to all artists, one day Lady Gaga, Adele, Ariana, Taylor, etc will not be at the top of audiences priority in terms of new music.

In addition radios don't play new music from older artists no matter how popular they still are. At most you'll hear them on stations that play greatest hits but not current hits.

I don't think it's totally improbable for Celine to have a hit but it's much much harder. Never say never.

Let's appreciate and enjoy the fact that she is still a top touring performer, and her music is still reaching new audiences and creating new fans (even if it's not in masses).
