I am confused by the ending of this interview. Is Celine trying to say that she isn't happy? I hope that isn't the case and that she isn't just putting on a happy face to please everyone. :down:

I highly doubt that's the case, because she appears to be pretty happy and optimistic for her future in recent interviews. Maybe it was translated in a way that makes it appear as though she's not happy, or maybe she just meant that she wasn't happy when Rene was suffering for 3 years, but she's happier now? I just hope she is happy anyways.

I was more shocked by her bodyguard comment, but now that I’m thinking about it, it is a strange road to go down.

Maybe someone native will fill us in... but maybe what she means is she no longer wants to pretend to be nice to people who aren’t nice to her. She used to be bubbly and always positive, but her new “edgy” side is emerging and it ain’t putting up with any bs#! Any one else have a different understanding?

The way I interpreted the happy comment was that it had been a while since she was happy like she is now, not that she isn't happy. Just going off what she has said in the past about how she suffered watching Rene sick and getting worse for years and then his death (and her brother) and having to rise from that.

The body guard comment was a joke imo. Celine has a lot of those sarcastic remarks that she says with a straight face, I can totally see her doing that with this remark and maybe the journalist took it seriously. Although she does mention how Celine was making them laugh a lot.

I do like to think that Celine isn't taking any crap anymore, it's been years of her just turning the other cheek but, as we have seen several times already, she doesn't stay quiet anymore.

...Here's the bulk of the article translated in to English..and if anyone wondered if Céline was going thru menopause, well keep reading...

The journalist, Chantal, opens the piece by describing how her mother loved teenage Céline back in the 80s, while she was herself listening to goth music like the Cure. And they took immense pleasure in taking jabs at each other idols. While Chantal secretly doesn't *hate* Céline, she would never admit this to her mother.

While all her favorite artists have died (Cobain, Prince, Winehouse, Fortin, Bowie, etc.) Céline lives on. And what's worse, is that she's never faded into obsolescence, never a has-been, never any need for a "comeback". And all the while, her mother repeating over and over, "What did I tell you when she was 13 years old, hein? INTERNATIONAL SUPERSTAR"

So when her boss asked if she wanted to interview Céline Dion, she couldn't NOT say yes.

"Finally the hour of vengeance would come. My mom would lose her mind, and all of her gay friends would rip my head off. Contrary to Xavier Dolan, another one of those people always tripping over Céline, I did not want to kill my mother. I decided to tell her before just hopping on the plane to Montreal."

— « Guess who I get to interview?
— Who?
— C'est Céliiiiine ! It's a secret.

I giggle the whole way to the airport. When I turn my phone back on, I see a barrage of texts and missed calls:
— « I don't now why, I just always knew you were going to interview her. I just knew it!

Another one of her prophecies.

—Mom, Céline's probably had a billion interviews in the last 30 years. Listen, it's five journalists for a brief twenty minute round table sit-down. It's not like we're hanging out the whole night together.
— Touch her.
— What do you mean, touch her ? ! ? »

Surely my mom couldn't know about rumours of her sexual orientation? We've long know Céline to be a gay icon, worshiped by drag queens,, but she is also a lesbian icon, and certain feminist fans think she is sending coded messages \about it through the years. Once, I went into a boutique that sold things like "F*** the patriarchy" shirts, and there they had sweaters and postcards with Céline's face --from the Incognito era-- emblazoned with lines like "Kiss my #ss". Even the intellectuals have a soft spot for Céline.

« Touch her for good luck !
— Mom, look, I'm not doing that. »

For my mom, it's like Céline has healing powers, like the Pope (whom she met, Jean-Paul II). This was getting intense for me.
It wasn't just a joke when in 2010 in Haïti, after an earthquake shook my hotel, that I updated my Facebook status to: « As Céline sings : I’m alive. » I was sending a message to my mom, even if she wasn't totally unhinged by my being there.

The day of the interview, I woke up so stressed that I had to vomit. While doing this, my mom was sending me GIFs of Céline raising her arms in the air or dramatically winking at the camera. It's worth mentioning, as the D day approached my mother herself became stressed and fearful: what if Céline was a b**c#? « She better be nice to you, otherwise I'll HATE her. » Now I wasn't just nervous about screwing up the interview, but also about destroying an innocent infatuation of a woman who meant no harm.

« Do you have a question for Céline ?
— Euh… Madame Dion, are you a happy woman ?
— Maman, no body answers questions that dumb, not even Céline. »

...But Céline did answer that, and I should have known.

The interview was set for r 21 h 15 in a chic hotel, but she didn't arrive until 23 h 30. After so many shows in Vegas, Céline is a night owl. When we enter the room, she is already seated, not looking at all tired, dressed in a superb satin chemise with a unicorn print, surrounded by members of her inner circle, and she apologized for the delay, taking the time to shake each of our hands (I touched her, maman).

There she was. The international star. Which is extremely bizarre, because she's always been there. She was 100 % « queb », having spent the past several weeks in Québec. We were helping her for her performance.

After speaking about René and the kids and starting on the world tour, she began to turn up the camp: « This isn't a "new" Céline, it's the continuation of a new chapter that is finally debuting for the first time... Of course I'm going to sing the hits like Because You Love Me and The Power of Love ou j’sais pas…Titanic ? I don't know if you've ever heard that one? … If I don't sing that one, I can guarantee you that there will be a whole gang of people that will be disappointed. And I do not say that pretentiously. It's a must, I have no choice to sing! I will die with [it]! Well it's a nice problem to have! she continues in a style that almost reminds Jean-Luc Mongrain when we spoke face to face. « I'm going to sing the old repertoire and the new, with a new stage and new costumes ... If you've never seen me on stage, come and see us. We have a nice stage setup, and if that doesn't do it for you, well I hope you'll find a nice movie to watch on the telly. Make yourself a big ol' popcorn with lots of butter and salt. »

We know that Céline has zero filter, but in person, it's fascinating to watch. I realize that there is no "Céline mystery". For decades, reporters have been trying to dig up her secrets, but it's not necessary: she does it all alone. And this, obviously for the purpose of "delivering the goods", and the best of itself. With her status, she is not obliged to give interviews to a local press that pulls the devil by the tail. She could do like Arcade Fire and only grant interviews to the most prestigious international publications.

I've seen much more modest stars seem frazzled, and look stupid, after only 3 interviews. Céline probably did a zillion on that day, and she didn't even seem phased.
A diva ? Hardly. Divas don't act like that. A méga-pro, yes. A pure-blood thoroughbred of Showbiz, who never cracks no matter the amount of pressure on the line.. And, at 51, perfectly aware of her career and the fact that she has nothing to prove.

Dominic Tardif, journalist at Le Devoir, offers a question that he does not even have time to finish, but that I am happy that he asks: « Céline, I’m a big music snob. When I was a teenager, there were people who thought Céline Dion was the greatest singer in the world, for good reason, and there were others who thought it was...»

— « Quétaine », she interrupted, unperturbed. Céline busted out the « q » word. « Well first of all, we all know you can’t please everyone. When I started out at 12 years old, they said “Great, another René Simard - hear how nasal she sounds?!” Then there was « Everything she says to the public is rehearsed » … That’s true - I quit school at 14 ! Then I tried homeschooling, and yes I was taught to memorize things by heart - I’d never spoken in public before ! “Well just pretend you’re talking to your 13 brothers and sisters…” Get real! You try that out, at 13 years old, and then we’ll talk about it ! Of course I’m a bit « quétaine » ! I fully agree with you ! I had no money, I wore my brothers’ and sisters’ hand-me-downs, I would have loved it if they could have dressed as you do [to the interviewer], because I don’t think you look in any way shape or form « quétaine » I really love your look ». Dominic was wearing a trendy, black hat that made him look kind of Mormon.

« Like I said, you cannot please everyone. There are people who will never like me, there are people who liked me at the beginning of my career but not anymore, and there are people who liked me then and still like me now. So at the end of the day, I’m 51, and I’m still here. I never wanted a “hit” - I wanted a career. It took a whole lot of efffort, hard work, great luck, a wonderful team, beautiful tunes, and being in the right place at the right time - with the right people who supported me. »
This « eccentric» version of Céline began emerging the day she flaunted a Titanic hoodie (having never actually hit any career icebergs of her own), and I had the impression that that Céline was always there, and René just toned it down. In any case, some of her older fans became shocked by her increasingly outrageous looks. « If you aren't prepared to leave it all behind, even before it starts, to be criticized, positively or negatively, you are in the wrong boat, I can tell you right now » she warns us. « If you're not ready to be told that you're ugly, that you're no good, that you're too thin ... 'Hey, fall dead three times'... I did not give birth to my twins, I have a 4 year-old daughter hidden somewhere... do you think that I shouldn't read any reviews? A little stunned, I manage to ask if being a woman in your fifties is an age of freedom, despite an industry eager to push ageing stars to the exit at 40 years. "I think it's been a long time," she says. I think it's been a long time since I'm happy. I have often been criticized for that: she is happy to be happy and happy to be happy. And then, Céline began to sing, something she had refrained from so far during the interview, to the tune of "Viva Las Vegas" :

The interview is over, and I myself am hot because we've all been laughing at the show she put on for us. Just after midnight, and I'm ready to turn into a pumpkin, but we are told each journalist has permission to take a photo with Céline. I wondered what would happen if I refused? In any case, I need proof for my mother, who will faint when she sees her.
I look stiff as a board standing next to Celine, who is completely relaxed. I think of the thousands of fans she had to pose with. How many cried, how much trembled, how many shouted with joy? How many would be willing to cut my arm off to be in my place? How does she withstand so much attention, answer so many requests or wishes? I have a hard time faire la bise with even my closest friends without feeling uncomfortable. What she saw on the daily would have sent me to the asylum long ago.

And that's where her immense expertise of people comes into play. She places her hand gently on my back and it relaxes me. I do not believe it. Looking at the iPhone that is snapping the shot of us, I hold in a giggle, because I'm thinking about my mother, which is why I'm even posing for the photo.

To me, this is her saying "yeah, I'm a positive, happy person, deal with it. I've been happy for a long time, and I haven't hidden it to be cool or artificially interesting".

You’re totally right! “It has been a long time since I was happy” should be translated more like “I’ve always been happy-happy-happy-happy”. People expect her to be tortured, and she’s just not wired that way.

This is very suitable for this thread I guess, becuase it's totally random :giggle:

So, I've read an article a while ago and it said that in the late 90s Celine agreed to record the song called 'Messages of Love' written by Mary S. Applegate (co-writer of Power of Love) with the russian songwriter. Eventually it never happened becuase Rene got ill and everything, but when I listened to this song, even it's not in english or french, I somehow can totally imagine 90s Celine singing it

A little out of topic but I just saw Ron Howard's Pavarotti documentary and it's phenomenal, yes Céline is shown a couple of times in the Modena concert but nothing new, not even the singing. There's a lot on that doc and in Luciano's life/career that certainly makes both artists unique and different from the whole "Celebrity", there's also the part about the voice, the technique and the criticism at the end about him straining the notes that also makes it so relevant. Just a thought. And I really got to say that even if the song they did together is a lackluster for many...I'm just so happy they got the chance to do it. Based on the fact she has a new song titled "Love Never Dies" and the new Bond movie is called No Time To Die, I wonder how far off the chances are of this already being a thing?

I was just browsing around on Instagram and decided to see if there was anything new under #renecharles

I knew that there was just a Shriner's Hospital Golf tournament in Summerlin Las Vegas and I thought there might be some new pics of RC golfing, since he usually play with some of the players beforehand. I saw a new video of him golfing and it looks as though someone at Alienpro are impressed with RC's golfing, because they reached out to him. At least that's what it looks like from the message posted beside the golf video. They want RC to become there Alienpros Grip Ambassador! :w00t: Wow. That would be so cool. Way to go RC!! :clap:
