Do y'all feel that her reputation, her "classiness" sometimes holds her back from being a certain way, from just letting go in her videos? (English side I guess) In other words, they will only direct her a certain way? Is her "team" too involved that they reject anything "silly" or going against her reputation?

Yes! I have always felt this way. I think her team has a certain idea of how she should appear in English markets, and that probably keeps them choosing certain songs, singles, video directors, etc. And at this point in her career, I think it would be extremely difficult to break out of the "image" that they have built for 20+ years.

Yeah I certainly do! When you look at PQTME video I think this is the most artistic and most impressive video. I don't think Sony would have dared to make a video like that for English singles. Those are usually pretty standard, romantic and decent (besides DYGEL :P LOL). But then again usually the chosen singles are so safe, they can't really have a daring video...

I wish they had included more of the French "authenticity" in her English career. And made that side a bit more daring and not just LOVE LOVE LOVE.

I totally agree about the PQTME video! The closest we ever got in English was maybe OOR, and even that doesn't really have the same sort of abstract, artistic quality. I think you're right about the choice of singles, which also goes back to the choice of songs for albums in English vs. French, which could be an entire topic of its own.

There are obviously plenty of reasons for differences between her French and English work, but I kind of agree that her English career doesn't have the same "authenticity" as French, and in some ways I feel like the English-speaking market is missing out on how artistic her work can truly be. (Don't get me wrong, I love Celine's English music, and it showcases her talents in wonderful ways. It's just different from her French music.)

Yes to both of your statements!

And in your reply to my post, exactly! I think they did try to break out with LMBTL and the public wasn't crazy about it. Well, the public in the States   Canada and Europe did ok right? (I can't remember) Plus it didn't help that radio in the States would not play her!!!

I have to say I absolutely adored LMBTL, "croaky", "bedroom voice" and all! (minus the "Vegas" tracks)

"the CD was a frequent punch line in executives' presentation to workers, including when a puppet character named Willie joked that being a Wal-Mart worker was getting dangerous. When Mike Moore, executive vice president of supercenters, asked why, Willie replied, One of my fellow associates recently developed a serious eye-tic from hearing Celine Dion's greatest hits on loop in our stores." Justin Bieber was also apparently featured on the CD."

Awkward considering they hire her for shareholders meetings....

I think she's losing popularity in the "it crowd" now. She needs to release something like BYLM again. While we adored LMBTL, I don't think America was ready for it, you know?

In Canada and Europe, I think they liked it. Celine's always a hit over there. Partially too, they did lots of promotion for it. LOADS! We needed that here- maybe that kinda promotion coulda helped. :)

I completely agree on all points. I think with LMBTL, it was just too much change for the American public... But yeah. And about the French thing, I couldn't agree more! It's her native language, and I think she loves it more then English. She said once, paraphrasing, singing in French is like with a beautiful gown, but English is just a casual thing with jeans and the like... So the Francophone audience is getting more from her... Wish it would be the same in English! I love her both ways though!! :)

I have never before had any desire to work for Wal-Mart . . . I didn't know they played a lot of Celine! Wish they'd play Celine on loop in my job!

:sofunny: OMG, great idea!! We should all do this -- a worldwide movement to request more Celine playing in Walmart stores. That'll show those employees. In fact, not just Walmart, but every store we go in to, we should casually stop by customer service, and request that they play more Celine. (No one would think we were crazy. Not a one).

I somtimes hear Celine music playing at my Wal Mart. For the most part, I sometimes hear Taking Chances, Alone, A New Day Has Come and That's The Way It Is. It doesn't happen often. Funny enough though, I mostly always hear her whenever I go to the mall, especially at christmas. I love it!

Well speaking for the UK she's not always a hit (by Celine's standards )over here. LMBTL did a lot better than TC - talking singles here rather than the album. And she did a lot of promo both times,x factor etc. Comes down to the song and LMBTL is so much better than TC. There was an actual buzz about her again. Could've been the start of something humongous 😕

BBut yeah she definitely needs a massive hit song like Let It Go. Those kinds of songs can still be hits, just need the right song and circumstances.

How Do You Keep The Music Playing? - Celine Opening Night March 15th, March 16th

It drives me crazy that Celine gets basically no airplay here in the States. People here only see her as the lady who sang the Titanic song, and that has kind of made her a bit of a joke, so I think people here are dismissive of her and her music. It's really a shame because we all know how much she has to offer and how great her work still is.

I think it's got to be tough for her team to figure out how to market her nowadays. It's got to be a difficult balancing act between maintaining the classy, classic image she has as a romantic ballad singer (which is what they seem to have aimed for with the Vegas show) and trying to get her mainstream attention with collaborations with Ne-Yo and work with people like Sia and Eg White. People don't take her new music seriously since there is so much stigma around her being a cheesy, over-the-top ballad singer (that's just how average people tend to see her here in the States). Radio programmers aren't willing to take a chance on her nowadays, even though the music is great.

I was watching the Wendy Williams show last week and she was talking about Janet Jackson, that she's going to record a new album. Wendy kept saying we don't want new songs,we don't care about or buy new albums. She also said Janet should just do a vegas residency and sing her hits. I think this kind of attitude and people in the media having this opinion doesn't help established artists either.

Yes, sometimes I just want to shake these people.

I'll never forget one comment when LMBTL (the single) came out and AC was playing it in Houston, the commenter said, "Do you have to play Celine every hour!?" Sunny 99 was playing it and then zilch, nada... died into obscurity.... Broke my heart! I requested all the time to no avail.

People are just used to her normal ballads... And a lot of people call her "old"... So yeah, doesn't surprise me, sadly. :(

Does anyone else equate Celine's bun to Clark Kent's glasses? By day, she wears the bun and is wife, mother, ect. ect... but at night she let's her hair down and BAM! she's Celine Dion! (international superstar) :giggle:
