Céline being cool again

Recommended Posts

206 millions of people in 2020....she really needs to go there, and in every country she is really popular, where she has never gone.

She crossed off certain countries very slowly but surely. Jamaica with the Jazz Fest, Indonesia with the Asian Summer Tour.

I think she is extremely loved in Haiti and Nigeria. Maybe besides that, she really needs to visit Brazil.

Wow!!! Reminded me of Celine here and other pros who have done this. Have never heard a blind amateur sing this song quite so well

No one can do what Céline does when hitting the big note (O) most singers like this contestant always go for the safest vowel to hit the note which is the (A) AHHHHH which sounds more open

Céline- ANY MOOOOOOOOOOOOOORE

Others- ANY MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH

Btw, she sounds like Olivia-Newton John doing ballads

I just happened across it! I love how the Tweeter recognized Celine did a cover of it

Wow! So glad to finally see Celine recognized in this way! I know she already has an honorary PhD from Laval, but Berklee is basically the Harvard of contemporary music, so this is real recognition from peers.

I wonder if she will be there at the ceremony. Carole King and Annie Lennox accepted together and the ceremony was great!!!

Christian McBride and Terri Lyne Carrington (who both played on the Mr. Paganini session, along with Herbie Hancock) are faculty at Berklee, and I’m sure Céline worked with many of its alumni over the years - songwriters, session musicians, producers. Their alumni list really is a Who’s Who of the jazz and pop world. I’m sure that had something to do with her being selected. These are all pros who know a musician’s musician when they hear one.

Well, it’s virtual, because COVID. But surely we’ll get a little something.

“From the campus in Boston and various remote locations around the world, a group of student performers representing the class of 2021 will unite as a collaborative virtual ensemble to perform a multigenre tribute to the honorees from the College. The prerecorded tribute will air on Friday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m. ET on Berklee's YouTube channel.

Berklee College of Music’s commencement ceremony will stream the following day, May 8, at 10:00 a.m. ET, on the school’s social media channels. Boston Conservatory at Berklee’s commencement ceremony will stream on the same date at 2:00 p.m. ET.”

In this case, I wish she were nominated next year so she could be there in person. Because it truly is a special ceremony. She'd probably sing Pharrell's "Happy" song if she were there in person, among many others. That's what Annie did and it was amazing.

And I see Willie Nelson in that group, too! What stellar company.

These things are really special. Joni Mitchell got an honorary PhD from McGill while I was there - not at the music school, but I still went to the music school commencement. She was no longer performing at that time but it was so thrilling just to see her speak, live in person.

Anyway, it being virtual is a bummer, but this is what they did last year (also virtual). Basically (ridiculously talented) students doing tributes. John Legend joined in for a bit during his segment, and he also gave the commencement address -

I love Joni Mitchell! You are so luck you got to see her speak. And in Canada too. Yes, I think if Celine got this award next year, she would be there in person. This is the event I would love to see Celine in person for these days.

Also, John Legend got honored before Celine? I'm sorry but give me a break.

I saw this in TV back in 2003, and I think about it from time to time. Even with her enormous success of ANDHC, Céline was still hated by many people in America... particularly people who were “cool”. Sony tried to set her up with younger artists on her TV specials (Destiny’s Child, N*Sync & Justin Timberlake, and later Will.I.Am.), but their cool never rubbed off on her.

I don’t think it was until around TCWT or even her second residency that she started to “chart” as a cool performer to see live, instead of an easy target for a joke. It just took time for her negative association with ballads and the Titanic film to wear off a little (as Carl Wilson predicted). Obviously the Celinaissance after René passed was her peak popularity IMO, but they waited too long to release and English material and that momentum began to decrescendo, and came to an abrupt halt with her taking a sabbatical from any meaningful or genuine interaction with her fanbase.

Anyway, this segment, though very mean spirited, always made me laugh. I’m sharing it so we can measure how far she’s come along in her journey to “cool”

I think a lot of her "uncoolness" came from the fact that she was never seen as a single woman. Then she became a mom at a standard age too. And she had her biggest ballad hit right at the time in music when ballads were becoming very uncool. Even though she changed her image in 1999-2000 with TTWI and her new look, I think people still remembered her for MHWGO.

So, there's a bit of misogyny there and ageism of course. I think it probably also has to do a little with anti-French attitudes in the early 2000s, which your clip alludes to. It's no coincidence that she became "cool" right as she lost Rene.

I agree with that, but I think for me, Une Seul Fois was a game changer. That show was an incredible production, and it showed her newer, more relaxed stage presence. That’s what I was alluding to when I brought up TCWT and the second residency, then USF. People always associated her with awkward movements on stage before. Of course, she still has her moments!

Hmm..it's interesting to think of personal perspective of her coolness versus public perception. I only really became aware of Celine when the Taking Chances album came out, I believe. But looking back now, it does seem that the TCWT was a big shift. And she didn't have to do much, but I think it was intentional. Leaving Vegas, a little different with the personal style (not sure when Annie was hired), music in a different direction.

But I think you're right that her most uncool years were 98-2008. Also, I totally memory-holed USF....I don't even know if I've seen most of it. Related question, why did she stop doing the chest thump? :sofunny:
