Céline being cool again

Related question, why did she stop doing the chest thump? :sofunny:

She didn’t. She still does it a couple times each show.

I saw this in TV back in 2003, and I think about it from time to time. Even with her enormous success of ANDHC, Céline was still hated by many people in America... particularly people who were “cool”. Sony tried to set her up with younger artists on her TV specials (Destiny’s Child, N*Sync & Justin Timberlake, and later Will.I.Am.), but their cool never rubbed off on her.

I don’t think it was until around TCWT or even her second residency that she started to “chart” as a cool performer to see live, instead of an easy target for a joke. It just took time for her negative association with ballads and the Titanic film to wear off a little (as Carl Wilson predicted). Obviously the Celinaissance after René passed was her peak popularity IMO, but they waited too long to release and English material and that momentum began to decrescendo, and came to an abrupt halt with her taking a sabbatical from any meaningful or genuine interaction with her fanbase.

Anyway, this segment, though very mean spirited, always made me laugh. I’m sharing it so we can measure how far she’s come along in her journey to “cool”

Daily Show with Jon Stewart & Lewis Black:

“Celine Boycott”

https://www.cc.com/video/st3g9j/the-daily-show-with-jon-stewart-back-in-black-celine-boycott

It's interesting that you have mentioned TCWT as a shift moment. I became fan of Celine around that time. I knew who she was, I grew up listen to her hits on radio and on tv, but I was too young to be a following fan in her prime (born in 1990). I'm from Brazil, it's not a market she gave attention to, but she was big around here in the 90's. I remember my parents bought All The Way and I loved to listen to it. But, after her break, young people kinda lost the interest in Celine. Britney, Christina, boybands, they were the big artists and Celine was kinda old. And, funny thing, my step father bought ANDHC and didn't like at all, he believed it was too pop for his taste. So I took the album for myself and listen to it, all the time. But I was the only one in my circle and age who actually listened to Celine still.

Anyway, I told all that back history just to say that when Taking Chances come out I was older, I was 17yo, and there was already large information and social interactions on internet, so for the first time I could actually follow a release (BTW, at this point, I've never heard of OH or that Celine had a French career). Later I bought TCWT,and that's when I really became a fan. I was not expecting Celine to be that big of a pop artist. When I bought that DVD, I was hoping to see Celine on a simple stage, with a band on the back, singing ballads to older people. And, what I saw was a big show, big stage, dancers, a Madonna style of concert. I was amazed with her personality. Bottom line is: I was not expecting nothing that big!

and this is why this woman resonated with me so much more than any other singer out there. yes her voice is out of this world, but she seems to be kind to all other artists, even those who make fun of her (well except lara fabian hahaha)

What was the kindness? I felt like a tweet was missing. Was it that she had the person backstage with parents? I mean that is kind but I was expecting something more of the story

1- letting the girl shine

2- wishing her competitor to win

3- fanning out over every new female singer out there and encouraging them instead of putting them down

I don't think a young violinist is Celine's "competitor" but yes I love when Celine lets young artists shine. She did it with Yuna in Japan and Charice (now Jake) on her TCWT.

Love that write up from the Grammy's above- thank you!

'The artist who finally toppled "One Sweet Day" ended up truly dominating 1996. Although Dion had already released a string of albums before Houston and Carey had set foot inside a recording studio, the Canadian only began making waves outside the Francophone market with 1990’s Unison. It would be another four years before she started being mentioned in the same breath. But by the end of her fourth English-language album’s campaign, Dion had become the new queen.

A true blockbuster of a record, Falling Into You reportedly(opens in a new tab) shifted a colossal 32 million copies, placing it in the same bracket as The BeatlesSgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and EaglesHotel California. It spawned two No.1 hits: the slow-building theme to the Robert Redford/Michelle Pfeiffer romance Up Close and Personal, "

," and the epic-from-the-get-go "It’s All Coming Back to Me Now(opens in a new tab)." And it saw Dion recognized at every major award ceremony, including the Oscars, Golden Globes, and, most notably, the GRAMMYs.

Of course, Houston had previously shared the Album of the Year award for her contributions to The Bodyguard OST. However, Dion was the first of her peers to achieve the accolade entirely independently: despite some rather snooty predictions(opens in a new tab), Carey’s Daydream had failed to win the category, or indeed any of the five others it was nominated for, in 1996. Falling Into You, which was additionally crowned Best Pop Album at the same 1997 ceremony, even beat another Houston-heavy soundtrack, Waiting to Exhale, to the glittering prize.'

The Mariah fans are always so loud on social media.

They try to discredit Celine Dion all the time.

If you have Twitter (or Facebook or Instagram), go give some love to Celine in the comments in this post - because the Mariah fans are claiming FIY is an undeserving album - and Celine is somehow lesser than Whitney & Mariah. Which is a joke.

Also, who is that Gustave guy? I notice he’s our #1 Celine soldier on all of these kinds of posts on Twitter. We need WAY more Celine fans to speak up on social media. We’re all too darn polite (or just don’t care enough) compared to Mariah’s fan base. They get fired up so easily.

We don’t care as much because we’re not as insecure as them. We know (they do too) that Céline’s still got her amazing voice and still sells out arenas and stadiums everywhere she goes. Mariah’s fans are trying to convince people, as well as themselves, of their ridiculous delusions whereas we don’t have to. Plus, I can guarantee that Céline (or anyone else important for that matter) does not read any of that anyway so it’s not like we’re helping her by getting involved.

I agree.

But I’ve gotta say that it’s incredibly refreshing when the occasional Celine fan speaks up and sets the record straight from time to time.

About the artist: https://en.wikipedia...iki/Qveen_Herby

(She's a Berklee grad!)

How many songs are there now carrying the "Celine Dion" title?

First there was The Arrogant Worms: https://open.spotify...cRRmbyjlc2Ad34g

Then Tunde Olaniran: https://open.spotify...HSDWY8Ny-n0tW9w

This will be the third I'm aware of.

Any others?

PBS aired an hour-long Tunde Olaniran special this weekend, and yes, it featured his Celine Dion song, so we finally get a proper quality video!

Link below, though I suspect it might be geo-blocked for the US.

By the way, the Celine Dion from Tunde Olaniran's PBS special is now on YouTube:
