PuraVida Posted May 8, 2021 at 09:29 AM Posted May 8, 2021 at 09:29 AM This was a very fun video, but in the second half of the video I got very upset that they didn't use Celine's best singing clips and notes....which sucks because I feel that both sides should have amazing clips used in these battles. I commented complaning lol. Quote

Programs are here, if you're interested in seeing who participated: https://college.berk...du/commencement They should post the individual segments here later: And here's a bit about Maureen McMullan, who introduced her at the commencement: https://www.berklee.edu/news/berklee-now/maureen-mcmullan-named-berklee-concert-and-event-producer-external-affairs "A Scottish soprano, songwriter, arranger, and bandleader trained in both classical and contemporary music, McMullan is widely recognized for her versatility. Thank you!I loved watching the students perform these Celine songs. It was so uplifting to see and they all did a great job.I was particularly blown away by the climax in To Love You More. So good! They all captured the essence of Celine... uplifting / positive and powerful. There are also some very touching moments in Celine's speech.I love how -- even though she reached the mountaintop in her career -- Celine is still so gracious to people who are chasing their dreams & she reminds them to enjoy the journey because the destination is not guaranteed. She's always been very sensitive to the fact that there are many talented people out there (like her siblings) who don't get the chance to realize their dreams, but you can still enjoy the journey. "...if you put every ounce of your heart and soul into your music, it will set you free." Yeah, she seems very cognizant that it takes a lot more than talent to get to where she is. I think she's said that before - when participating in the various TV talent shows - so many insanely talented kids come her way all the time with stars in their eyes and she knows quite well that talent and hard work is one thing, but you also need luck, timing, the right people in your corner, etc. I also think honors like this also actually mean a lot to her because they come from corners she doesn't expect. That came across here, as it did back in 2008 when she got her PhD from Laval. And I seem to recall around the time when she got invited to participate in that Leonard Cohen tribute, she said something like she was surprised to be asked, that she didn't expect it (Leonard being such a towering literary and songwriting figure amongst the cultural elite). She was always loved by the "common folk", but less so by the "artistic intelligentsia", if I can put it that way. In the '80-90s, for sure, both in Quebec and elsewhere. (I don't want to misrepresent since it's been a while since I read all the various Celine books, but I seem to remember it coming up - either in hers or Rene's - how she was never accepted in certain, more "serious" cultural circles in Quebec, and I think Rene was quite frustrated by that at first, and came to consider it a challenge to "show 'em" she can make it without their blessing.) So despite huge popular success, I think she always felt a little shut out of certain artistic / cultural circles. But that has definitely changed in recent years. She's finally starting to get respect amongst many that once scoffed at her, and recognition like this must be very validating That, plus if RC is in "remote" college now, I think she has a first-hand appreciation for how much this last year sucked for these kids, how much of the college experience they missed out on. Music, especially, being such a communal experience. Edited May 9, 2021 at 11:10 AM by scielle 3 Quote

I skimmed through it, and all I heard him say regarding Céline & the song was that the *hope* for love and peace is not enough to save us from violent and turmoil... which is basically the theme of SSDA. He didn’t disparage Céline, and I didn’t get “QAnon” vibes at all. Just a harmless old pastor preaching his truth. No fire & brimstone, so just let it be. The worst thing he did was reference an Olympics song from 25 years ago. Edited May 10, 2021 at 07:14 PM by Chantemoi 3 Quote

The worst thing he did was reference an Olympics song from 25 years ago. My point was that the segue into and from Celine was a big stretch and very tangential/irrelevant. It wasn't an attack on Celine, but bringing her into this type of video--I have to think--was deliberate clickbait that will attract the QAnon people in the comments who already think of her as Satanic. Never said he was giving QAnon vibes. That said, he directly contradicts the message of the song. Power of the Dream is about relying on your hardwork and inner desire to achieve your goals. His message is that nothing good or peaceful is possible without Christ. Which is one way to look at the world that I personally think does a lot of harm....and certainly goes against the spirit of diverse inclusion that is the Olympics. Quote
