Wow. I'm surprised Courage is holding on at #1. I wasn't sure it would be a strong seller on iTunes.

Wait how is Sarah Jessica Parker connected to the whole Lips drag bar thing?? We know Celine is a big fan and there was that tabloid piece from the TC era about SJP changing hotels to get away from Celine but this would be the first time I’m hearing about SJP acknowledging Celine or knowing of her

I take it as regression to a younger more careless state of approaching a party -getting drunk and just live for tonight, leaving the rest for the headache tomorrow.

One could ask the same about “partying like a belieber”

Wonderful not only to hear it being called her best work today, but also seeing "artistic" used in a text about Céline Dion! 😊

Hope for her concerts to soon be called artistic aswell!!

Celine Dion is courageously honest on new album

“Courage” is singer’s best work to date.

Céline Dion, pictured here with late husband René Angélil in 2012, explores moving on from grief in latest release.Courtesy Georges Biard (Wikimedia Commons)

Céline Dion has done the unthinkable — she has reached her artistic peak, 40 years into her career. With five Grammys, four number-one Billboard singles and two diamond albums, it would seem there is nothing left for Dion to do but rest on her laurels. However, the “Because You Loved Me” singer lets listeners know there is one thing she has not done — bare her soul. On her twelfth English-language studio album “Courage,” she does just this. The past three years for Dion have been tumultuous and transformative. In 2016 she lost both her brother Daniel Dion and her husband and longtime manager, René Angélil, to cancer just days apart. Dion takes her experiences and channels them into the album, crafting her most personal project to date.

On a Facebook Live, Dion said, “I think I went through a lot. And life had given me the tools… to find my inner strength, to find courage and to keep going.”

This strength is evident through every aspect of the album from the production to the lyrics. “Courage” is the most modern and cohesive album from her discography. Numerous producers, including production team The Stereotypes and Jimmy Nape, worked on the album. Despite working with various producers, "Courage" flows seamlessly.

The producers also lend a modern sound to the album. This is most evident with the two opening tracks — “Flying on my Own” and “Lovers Never Die.” The former is an energetic EDM and House influenced song featuring jaunty keys and a pulsating beat drop. “Lovers Never Die” sounds like a trap remix of a James Bond theme with its twinkling keys and dramatic strings. Dion tackles contemporary music trends on “Courage,” and she does so with ease.

Lyrically, the album finds the chanteuse at her most vulnerable. Dion utilizes many other artists as songwriters on “Courage.” Writers such as Skylar Grey, Sam Smith, Sia and Greg Kurstin perfectly capture where the singer is at in her life. Dion has always sung of love and heartbreak, but with “Courage,” the typical subject matter of her lyrics is replaced by intimate and personal songs touching on topics like loss, self-love and empowerment.

The two standout tracks on the album are “Falling in Love Again” and “How Did You Get Here.” “Falling in Love Again” is a tender piano ballad about rediscovering love after the loss of her husband. The opening lines — “When the sun went down on that day / I never thought that love would come back to me” — are some of the most honest in all of her career. There is no ambiguity to these lyrics. Dion is sharing a new side of herself, letting fans into the intimate details of her life.

“How Did You Get Here” is an uptempo doo-wop style song with bouncy piano chords and horns. Lyrically, the song finds Dion expressing her reservations about beginning a new relationship. What truly brings the song together is the gospel-influenced background vocals. They turn a generic throwback song into something with soul and sass.

The album cover of “Courage” shows Dion walking away from a blazing fire seemingly unscathed. This is an accurate representation not only of the album, but of where the singer is in life. She has encountered major changes in her life and career but does not let this hold her back. Instead, she puts her experiences into her art by working with new producers and being more vulnerable than ever before. Such artistic growth at this stage in her career truly takes “Courage.”

The critics make me laugh. On a french one, the author wrote the country feel of some songs might confuse (and lose) her long time fans, while Talkaboutpop thought it would reassure die-hard fans reminding them of LTAL. Or when Change your mind reminds them of Gaga (Le Parisien).

:hmm:

Some of the french ones also felt necessary to specify that Celine was singing only in english in this album due to the absence of JJG.... Do they smoke? 'Cause I want some, they really do make connections that aren't there!

:sofunny:

Also, this:

"That’s Dion’s role in the music world: take an intimate moment, be it a lover’s kiss or a child’s cry, shout it out loud, and do it with enough drama and treacle that Andrew Lloyd Webber would get a nosebleed at the very thought. Dion’s best moments, be it “All by Myself” or “My Heart Will Go On,” are nothing if not a combination of moody mawkishness, grandstanding theater and syrupy bombast. Beyond the twilight’s last gleaming of ’80s hair metal bands gasping for success, it is Celine Dion who built and maintained the power ballad as her own weapon of mush destruction. She’s the Wernher von Braun of epic wonder and woe." - Variety

:-D

So true, this article was very fun to read.

I was always reluctant to admit streams into official sales.

But I guess the industry had to find a way for Celine not always being number one. :pinch:

I wish they had used tour bundles as early as TC, and even OH and Miracle (via bundle with the Las Vegas shows)... So she'd have more No. 1 albums. Not the same case with LMBTL, though, bevause even with a tour bundle, it was impossible to beat Eminem's album at the time.

They originally said it was her 4th #1 album and I emailed them, and less than 10 minutes later they responded and corrected it to 5th! 😂

I still can't hear "Oh baby" in 'Baby'. Although the title makes much more sense now that I've learned that, I still hear "I'll be theee-yeah-yeah-ere".

Same here!! I still here “I’ll be ther he he er”... I’m trying to hear “ooh babeey” but it isn’t working yet haha

Change My Mind is so uplifting and I think it’s a solid addition to her line up! I love the chorus, strangely I think the “make me drunk on you again, turn back time” is rather cool! Quirky but cool.

Yes! I love that line "make me drunk on you again". Can't stop listening to this song.

Love that this is Celine’s fifth number one English album!

Five is her lucky number and I’m thrilled it’s for this album — her very first without Rene, where she’s calling all the shots. This is HER album from start to finish. We’ve never had that before. So happy for her & everyone who worked on this fantastic album.

Fingers crossed for more promo in the coming weeks!

I must confess...

I hated Soul the first couple times I heard it. Now I cannot stop listening to ti! :pinch:

That's insane. It sure is bad. Very cliché. Overproduced (but obviously that's the kind of song for it).

Seems like if a young star trying to be hip crossed Sia's songwriting.

But it is SO addictive! Eyes on me in da place! Great hook.

I'm made of, I'm made of, I'm made of...

I imagine a country accoustic choir version of the song, like Glee did with Britney's 1, 2, 3.

Also, if you're made of saw, no wonder you miss a man's touch, Celine, you cut! :-D

Same. It took a couple listens but now I really really love it. All of the songs really grew on me. My top 5(Today that is) are(in no particular order) Look at us now, best of all, the hard way, change my mind, and perfect goodbye. But these change daily. I really love every song, the only song I tend to skip every now and then is “say yes”, and it’s not that I hate it, but for some reason I like the verses but I don’t like the chorus for some reason...

It's quirky and cheesy to be sure, but Celine has the personality and attitude to pull it off. It's fun, and I really enjoy it. Much of her music from Miracle onwards has been far too serious.

Today my favorites were “Best of All” and “Lovers Never Die”... I don’t see myself getting sick of this album anytime soon. It’s so fresh, modern, yet classically Celine all at the same time. I can really relate to the line “All my life, I’ve been blown by the wind... But now I know where I’m going”. I really love the riffs and melismas she’s got going in Best of All. It’s certainly one of the easy songs in her reportoire to sing but she just gives it so much flair! Such goodness with this album!! Edited by CelineDionFreak

Not talking about similarity, but Heart of Glass reminds me of Leona Lewis's Glassheart + Fireflies, and choir part of The Hard Way reminds me of OneRepublic's Preacher...

I shuffled play the album after days of in sequence, it gave me completely surprise elements. ^_^ :thumbsup2: This s**t is really good :music:

I don't see how her album won't be #1 on Billboard, and see what artists she topped with zero promotion:)
