"Courage" album - Official Topic

So today I spent time listening to just 5 new tracks (didn't have the time to listen to the album in its entirety, so picked some songs I was especially intrested in and had them on repeat). These were:

 

Lovers Never Die

Nobody's Watching

The Chase

How Did You Get Here

Boundaries

 

I love the production of them ALL! They have really stepped up with the production this time!! And I am so thankful for it!!!

I love the "riff" of NW (the strongest part of the song, her singing technique in LND, the old school flirting sound in HDYGH, and the overall feel of B (why was this a bonustrack and C and LD ended up on the album??). TC was SOOOO much better than what I heard on the snippet.

 

My favourite of these 5 are (judged by their over all feel) : Lovers Never Die (the "composed" singing style and modern singing, this is what LMBTL album should had been, and the Bondish sound (I DO hear it, even though it's not a powerballad) and The Chase (she sounds so good in "UK pop/rock" and the lyrics really speaks to me).

10/10 - Top Tier Songs

 

01.Perfect Goodbye - Such a special song. Dark and romantic.

02.Change My Mind - I am loving this song so much. Celine and LP sound fantastic together - would not mind a duet.

03.Boundaries - This song describes love like it should be.

 

09/10 - Excellent Songs

04.For The Lover That I Lost - Tearjerker.

05.Falling In Love Again - Classic Celine.

06.Nobody Watching - Feel-good mode: On.

07.Lying Down - Arguably the best Sia-penned song.

08.Courage - An anthem.

09.Heart Of Glass - This deserved a place on the Standard Edition.

10.The Chase

 

08/10 - Very Good Songs

11.Flying On My Own - I am loving this. And unlike many members I do not find it to be dated.

12.Lovers Never Die - This song would be excellent if it did not lack a climax. As I said before, it needs another whole minute.

13.Say Yes

14.Baby - This grew on me. I think it is playful despite its basic lyrics.

18.How Did You Get Here - I think this song does not fit the album musically. Should be a bonus track. Also, not my cup of tea. But it does have a hook and is memorable.

19.The Hard Way - I know this is a forum favorite but I find it rather noisy. Somewhat annoying. And its lyrics are bland. It is the vocal performance that defines the song.

 

05/10 - Low Tier Songs

20. All The Best - I have heard it 4 times and still cannot remember a single line. Shockingly forgettable.

21. Soul - Being lenient with this one.

Please forgive me but I am fed up with all the complaining for stupid things...

It is ok to give our opinion, I have given mine a lot recently.

 

But after all, nobody can deny that She has done her greatest effort since 1999 I think.

 

It must be hard for her to see every five minutes:

 

I have read people offended for the most ridicuolus things : Celine's promoting witchcraft, saying s**t in a song, not being thankful to fans, releasing the album with a lot of songs or with too few songs, the throat voice, the pronunciation, the sound is not modern, the sound is too modern, not enough videos, awful B&N videos, too much Sia, where is PMLALS, why this, why that, give me more, and more and I'll be never satisfied...

 

Again, it is ok to express opinions... but why do you express as if we had real right to complain?

However, of all the songs from the album, it is one of the three songs currently most viewed on Youtube.

 

It's on third spot. The most viewed so far is LND followed by FILA ...

 

I'm not surprise, the Sia army came to listen how it sounds and they know Sia will record it later on

and she posted it everywhere today on her accounts

 

Good news with LND and FILA, the latter one is quite special.

I just finished listening to the album. Sadly, it hasn't won me over in the first listen though. Most of the album is a rather slow beat. The songs started to blend together and sound very same-y. It seems like throughout Celine's career, she'll mix her albums with ballads and up-tempo songs. Here, it's mainly ballads. Aside from "Flying on my own" I kept waiting for those dance songs. Where are they? You need something in there to break it up!

 

Also, I don't think I've ever had a more difficult time understanding her. I wasn't even sure she was speaking English at times. And then I was like "Is she really saying sh*t?" It was so unnecessary in that song.

 

As the songs went on, I kept thinking "Maybe the NEXT one will be the standout!" And then the album was over. I mean...out of 20 songs... I love the song "Courage." So...there's that.

 

Maybe the album will grow on me.

 

You will have to give it more time and hearing it much more...

There are plenty of songs which do not fall under the slow bit category: Change My Mind, Baby, Heart Of Glass, Nobody Watching, Imperfections, How Did You Get Here, Look At Us Now, The Hard Way. I am absolutely loving this album. Completely obsessed with Falling in Love Again, Lovers Never Die, Perfect Goodbye, Boundaries and The Hard Way after my first few listens. Also, finally just received my email from TM saying my CD is on the way. I can't wait until April, when I get to see her on this tour.

Finally listened to the deluxe album in full. Airpods pro in ears and volume cranked up to the max, lyric booklet in hand, old fashioned I know but for me it’s the only way to listen to a new Celine album for the first time.

 

Remember, I hadn’t listened to C, LD or I so I really did have a lot of catching up to do.

 

Firstly, there wasn’t one song that I can say off the bat that I didn’t like so that’s a plus for sure. First impressions are that I need to applaud Celine because this whole album is so modern, fresh and current and even the few ballads that she could’ve easily made sound old fashioned because of their lyrical content, she kept current by changing up her singing style. I totally agree that FILA is probably the closest to ‘old Celine’ on this album but I believe she’s really taken risks here and I think she deserves a lot of credit for that. They didn’t quite have the conviction to see it through last time around with LMBTL but she sure has here.

 

I get where some are coming from when saying that much of the album kinda all bleeds in to one but I’m certain that’s because most of the songs have no big climax or fade out which is clearly due to the length of each song. This, I find is a recurring theme on any new album I’ve listened to recently. I know that once I’ve listened a few times each song’s identity will become apparent and shine through so I’m not worried about this.

 

After all the negatives about her pronunciation and enunciation, I was extremely worried before listening but honestly all I can say is well done to her for taking on such difficult lyrical content, I think anyone who’s first language is English would struggle and find it hard to fit in all these lyrics and pronounce them accurately because there’s a hell of a lot going on lyrically in a lot of these songs so again I must commend her ‘courage’ and say that besides one or two slightly obvious moments, I think she’s done extremely well and because of the modern feel to these songs, it doesn’t seem out of place anyway. I may feel differently on this as more listens may highlight more ‘imperfections’ but we shall see.

 

I can also understand the 90’s power ballad lovers missing that certain elevation in the songs with the key changes and all but honestly I know she can sing the s*** out of any song and so as she says herself she has nothing to prove other than maybe the fact that she really can sound current and find a place in today’s market and she’s proved that tenfold’s on this album.

 

I cannot confirm my stand out favourites yet, definitely need to give it another listen or two to comment on that but with regards to the songs already released pre album launch, I will quickly comment on a few things that struck me:

 

C is absolutely nothing like what I was expecting, from everyone’s comments I was thinking it was going to be heart wrenching and that her singing style was going to be almost like a cry, I so didn’t get that at all from it so not sure where I’ve been ‘misled’ along the way. In fact, I didn’t get this feeling from any of the songs, and again I read people saying it’s like she’s almost crying throughout the album?! On the contrary, I actually found the whole thing to be quite cathartic and uplifting just as Celine herself had said she wanted from the album, in one of her previous interviews.

 

LD is totally different in full from the snippet we got on Carpool, it actually has a very dark and mysterious feel to it and I think this one sounds the least like a Sia song out of the 3 and Celine sounds the least Sia like while singing this one.

 

I is totally, as everyone has said, a song that you could hear from anyone of today’s pop stars on the radio and I instantly thought this sounds so Justin Bieber 😂 However, Celine has stamped her unique signature sound all over it so by the end I no longer thought of anyone else singing it other than her.

 

Finally, to wrap this up, (I really didn’t mean to rant on quite so much), I think the whole Courage theme now fits more in line with Celine’s courage in giving us a modern album from start to finish without one old style Celine song thrown in to the mix, knowing that she won’t please everyone with this album but possibly hoping that she’ll bag a fair few new fans along the way and that we, her fans who’ve really been with her from day 1, can accept this change and evolve with her, and damn I’m certainly here for that!!

 

I believe in my heart of hearts that this album, as with LMBTL and as was proved with the latter, took so long because she was struggling and wrestling with what niche in the English market she could fit into and I’ve really thought for a long time, that she just never connected with her English work the same way she does with her French repertoire. I used to think this may be due to the language barrier but I now believe, more than ever after tonight, as hard as it may be for some folk to hear, that Celine’s older English material bores her shitless. To me this is why she spends so much time in her shows singing covers. I mean she grew up listening to Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doobie Brothers etc etc. I honestly just don’t believe power ballads were ever really her type of music but it was the 90’s and that’s where she fit in, in the English speaking market at that time with the big voice and all and unfortunately she was never willing to fully evolve before (or was this down to Rene, god rest his soul) for fear of upsetting her fan base, until now that is!! You might find this statement a bit controversial but I believe this to be true and have done for many years. I just hope now that she’ll take the bull by the horns and find a way to incorporate some of these songs in her shows among the old hits. The only reason why I think she possibly wouldn’t is because a lot of these songs lyrically will be extremely hard for her to interpret live so that for me is the worry.

 

Anyway, I hope you take the time to read this as I know it’s like a novel haha 😂

 

Celine, you’re one courageous lady, and I’m so sure Rene would be so proud of you for all you’ve achieved since his passing and for this new album totally of the modern age and I along with so many bloody love you!! ❤️

I've listened twice and still surprised. Not what I was expecting, not good or bad, just different. I was expecting a strong Celine, telling us she has the courage of going on. Instead I get the warm and comforting Celine that has the courage of being herself.

 

I now understand why there is not more song of the album on tour. But FOMO would be great.
