LukeD Posted February 9, 2014 at 08:39 PM Posted February 9, 2014 at 08:39 PM (edited) ok you are explaining to me things that I already know. I know that was a puppet for him, and all. That is why I said they were not in good terms. Secondly, I am just going to say this. I like that some people are getting super defensive about Mariah. Seriously, what is with this woman that people cannot say anything negative about her? I like Mariah and all but I dont think a person should be attacked for having a negative opinion about her. Dang! She is not immune. Then the third thing is its like you cant say anything negative about other female artists but when its Celine we are allow to trash and bash her. Ok not saying I am negative towards Celine because I am but to say that people are not to speak negative of others is bullcrap. Let others others talk. Not all the negativity has to do with Celine.Ι think there are more negative than positive posts about Mariah in this thread. Personally, since I am one of those who supported her, I have to say I did so because I honestly feel that there was much negativity for a recording we haven't even listened. And of course it is not acceptable to say that when Mariah makes a cover she sticks to the original version because that is not true at all. Mariah is not immune for me, I used to enjoy her music but once I got bored of her songwriting and overall attitude (not saying she is a bad person, it is just that her music does not reflect who I am in the slightest) I literally took the albums I owned and threw them to trash. Still, if I had to choose who did the best version for 'Open Arms', I'd say she did because this is just my opinion, it is not the result of my attempt to trash Celine who is by far my favorite singer. LukeD Posted February 9, 2014 at 08:45 PM Posted February 9, 2014 at 08:45 PM Well i must add that my friend is the biggest MC fan ever and when i asked him about this, he told me its not true, but there are rumours about Mariah covering some Whitney song to honor her on her new album. And i find it more possible too...I hope this is not true. Seems opportunistic. She already said she was inspired by Whitney (alongside Nick C.) when she wrote 'Triumphant'. Quote

I was a HUUUUUGE Mariah fan up until "Rainbow" that was the last album I loved consecutively from her. "Glitter" and "Charmbracelet" were flatlines to me (and I feel like she ruined one of my favorite Def Leppard songs on the latter). "The Emancipation of Mimi" was a HUGE comeback for her and it was a pretty damn good album. I looooved it. Saw the tour too and she was spot on. Pretty amazing. "E=MC2" was a crappy follow up. I was disappointed as I was hoping she would stay on track. "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" was in my opinion a little underrated. I liked the production value of the album. Everything after that has pretty much been crap. I enjoyed "Almost Home" from the OZ movie, and "#Beautiful" but definitely nowhere near as much as I enjoyed her earlier work. Her demeanor may have a lot to do with it too. I feel like she comes off so trashy based on the way she presents herself. I never think she looks good anymore. Her hair for some reason skeeves me out. And just the way she acts. She acts dumb...like an idiot almost. "DAAAHLING." Puh-leez!!! Like a high school girl she comes off as mentally, where as in earlier years she came off like a lady. She was a cute, America's Sweetheart, Girl next door type. Now with the tit implants, and the gross hair, and even her make up along with her overall attitude (not saying it's a bad attitude) I'm just turned off. It is well documented that Horner was giving MHWGO to Celine as a kind of consolation prize after their earlier collab on American Tail didn't work out. He felt really bad about it and had pushed to have Celine record Dreams to dream but they ended up choosing LInda Ronstadt instead. I still hope one day we will hear Celine's recording of "Dreams to Dream"..I believe it was already recorded when they decided on Linda Ronstadt. 3 Quote https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PL54qnRGM2gMatthew Charles - "Fix You" - Live at The Stonewall InnStonewall Sensation - Season 15Originally written and performed by Coldplay

I just couldnt like her like I used to. I still listen to her older music sometimes and I like a lot of the stuff after butterfly. Tho she is just that good anymore. Maybe that's how some Celine's fans felt with ANDHC album, because some people think it's way too different from the Celine they known. Edited February 9, 2014 at 11:49 PM by gafsa 1 Quote
Hilda Posted February 10, 2014 at 12:33 AM Posted February 10, 2014 at 12:33 AM (edited) While Mariah's version of "Open Arms" was not a hit per-se, it's still one of the most well known and beautiful covers of the song to date. I may even prefer it to Celine's. Sorry guys. mariahs version of open arms blows celines out-of-the-park - its perfect - i remember buying that single with the most gorgeous white cover when i was like 12 and loving it SO much....its still one of my faves by her. i dont even care to own celines version if celine had done this song back in 96, she would have done it as good as mariah. comingback Posted February 10, 2014 at 09:22 AM Posted February 10, 2014 at 09:22 AM I love the early 90s Mariah with Vision of Love and Dreamlover. But till Butterfly I don't like her music and her diva attitude. For example she prevented that Because you loved me was longer N1 on Billboard, because she ran to Mottolas office to make Always be my baby N1.And on Divas live she claimed that Celines picture was bigger than her picture. 1 Quote

PuraVida Posted February 10, 2014 at 10:42 AM Posted February 10, 2014 at 10:42 AM If it was meant for Mariah in 1996, she would have had it. They were still married then. In fact! Tommy Mottola specifically suggested to Celine that she record that song. He was the one who planted the idea. Quote
divaslive98 Posted February 10, 2014 at 04:19 PM Posted February 10, 2014 at 04:19 PM This is more than a response to Celine's Open Arms cover; I believe this song was originally intended for Mariah Carey, but she either turned it down or couldn't sing it. This was the time when Mariah and Tommy's marriage ws crumbling and I would bet a hundred dollars that he spitefully gave what was intended to Mariah's diva anthem to Celine, since it was obvious that Mariah had no interest in being whitewashed by her label, and thus sought out collaborations with hip hop / R&B writers and producers. 1 Quote

Celine did 'O Holy Night' back in her vocal prime and her version is not more memorable than Mariah's. It is pretty much a tie...! Actually... “O Holy Night” is a popular Christmas carol. Created in the 19th century, this song was inspired by a French poem ‘Minuit, chrétiens’ by Placide Cappeau, a poet and wine merchant. Many artists, including Celine, have recorded this famous carol. Celine’s version, produced by longtime collaborator David Foster, can be found on her holiday album ‘These Are Special Times’. In 2004, a survey revealed that Celine’s version was considered the most popular.CelineDion.com Now apparently her version loses to Josh Groban's (which aside from a rare verse that he sings is a carbon copy of Celine's as far as arrangements go...Thank you David Foster)http://www.musictimes.com/articles/2967/20131222/12-days-christmas-3-best-versions-o-holy-night.htm Most of the time when you hear people talking about Christmas music, Celine's version of "O Holy Night" comes up in conversations. 1 Quote https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PL54qnRGM2gMatthew Charles - "Fix You" - Live at The Stonewall InnStonewall Sensation - Season 15Originally written and performed by Coldplay
GoldenLeaf Posted February 10, 2014 at 07:05 PM Posted February 10, 2014 at 07:05 PM (edited) Mariah Carey's version of ''Open Arms'' is atrocious. She ruined this song with her annoying squeaky/airy voice and her overuse of melisma. Not to mention that all the awful and unnecessary ''yeah, yeah, yeah'' she's continually adding through the entire song are horrible and spoil the song. IMO, Celine's version of ''Open Arms'' is a trillion times better. She kept things simple and yet her delivery is superior to Mariah's. Edited February 10, 2014 at 07:25 PM by GoldenLeaf 4 Quote
