eyso Posted February 17, 2012 at 11:04 AM Posted February 17, 2012 at 11:04 AM personally, i found celine's comments really disappointing. whitney's death should have been a moment for divas around the world to come together, to remind the rest of us of just how hard it is to live under the vocal spotlight, to be expected to be perfect all the time. i was looking forward to a heartfelt, mature comment from celine and mariah, recognizing the cultural importance of whitney's passage. instead, celine chose to broadcast her ignorance and immaturity. she came across as bitchy, combative, and defensive - not exactly what you'd expect from the grand dame of the '90's diva mythology. whitney did not die of drugs; she died of shame, the shame of letting down her fans, destroying her gift, and having to endure the anxiety of her broken divahood in silence. we ought to be able to talk about divas with the respect they deserve, recognizing the incredible stress they must endure under the public spotlight. whitney was not a passive victim; she lived her life with intention, even when she was delusional. through it all, she retained the sublime dignity that god demands of all his divas. i don't mean to insult celine here. but she needs to recognize that she has an incredible responsibility right now. celine and mariah are the only two people alive on earth right now who truly know what whitney must have experienced in her career. if celine cannot understand this, then she doesn't deserve to be called a diva. the media is full of false rhetoric about whitney -- "whitney died of addiction, of her own mistakes," etc -- NO. whitney died of the impossible ideal of the diva; she very well may have killed herself after realizing that her voice was never going to get better. whitney and celine both share a gift from god, and it is against the basic law of the diva (as a sacred art) to disrespect the divine gifts of other divas. then again, maybe celine is just bitter that, even after following all the rules to the T -- never smoking, never indulging in cocaine, never partying in her 20's -- she still has to suffer from the same vocal difficulties that plagued whitney. i just wish that celine, as well as all divas, could offer the rest of us some perspective on just how hard it it is to be acclaimed as the voice of a generation. whitney's story is about more than drugs. to put her in the same category as amy winehouse just reveals how little celine actually knows about what it means to be a diva. please, celine. do something meaningful in honor of the life and art of your inspiration. make us cry, not cringe. additionally: until celine is willing to speak openly about her vocal difficulties between 2000 - 2010 -- that shameful era of lipped tracks, smoke and mirrors, and lullaby albums -- she doesn't deserve the right to speak about what whitney also hid from her fans. i bet this is a tough time for celine, because to truly memorialize her colleague, she needs to break her own silence on the vocal abuse she herself suffered as a result of constant touring and her inability to say no (something that whitney talked about a lot before she shut herself away from the world). celine, the world needs you now. we need you to help us understand why whitney houston hid her suffering from the world. before you do that, however, you must be willing to be honest with us about what you've gone through. death demands sensitivity and love, not recrimination. final point: celine and mariah need to get together to record a tribute song. at the very least they need to sit down for an interview together where they can express their feelings about whitney in a more measured setting. if this happens, i'd be in heaven... Nautanick Posted February 17, 2012 at 03:43 PM Posted February 17, 2012 at 03:43 PM personally, i found celine's comments really disappointing. whitney's death should have been a moment for divas around the world to come together, to remind the rest of us of just how hard it is to live under the vocal spotlight, to be expected to be perfect all the time. i was looking forward to a heartfelt, mature comment from celine and mariah, recognizing the cultural importance of whitney's passage. instead, celine chose to broadcast her ignorance and immaturity. she came across as bitchy, combative, and defensive - not exactly what you'd expect from the grand dame of the '90's diva mythology. Celine DID speak from the heart and said what so many of us are thinking - how much Whitney influenced popular music and how sad it is that such a God-given talent is now gone, and how the ever living hell someone with a loving family could end up like this. If being honest and telling it like it is is "bitchy", well then... whitney did not die of drugs; she died of shame, the shame of letting down her fans, destroying her gift, and having to endure the anxiety of her broken divahood in silence. we ought to be able to talk about divas with the respect they deserve, recognizing the incredible stress they must endure under the public spotlight. whitney was not a passive victim; she lived her life with intention, even when she was delusional. through it all, she retained the sublime dignity that god demands of all his divas. Shame does not kill people. If that were true, then Michael Jackson would have died of it long before 2009. But you're right about one thing - Whitney was hardly a victim. She chose to start doing drugs and did them for 15 years, long enough to reduce her voice to a literal husk of what it once was. Did she start due to stress? Maybe, maybe not--but that's a reason, not an excuse. All of the great singers -- Barbra, Aretha, Madonna, Mariah, Celine -- have been under tremendous stress at multiple points in their careers. Not all of them turn to drugs and/or booze to deal with it. So if Whitney was "ashamed" for letting down her fans, destroying her gift -- though she never "endured her broken diva-hood in silence -- well then that's unfortunate, but entirely her fault. whitney died of the impossible ideal of the diva; she very well may have killed herself after realizing that her voice was never going to get better. whitney and celine both share a gift from god, and it is against the basic law of the diva (as a sacred art) to disrespect the divine gifts of other divas. then again, maybe celine is just bitter that, even after following all the rules to the T -- never smoking, never indulging in cocaine, never partying in her 20's -- she still has to suffer from the same vocal difficulties that plagued whitney. LOL!! You're supposing that Whitney killed herself over her voice just the same that others are supposing that she OD'd and drowned--in other words, doing the exact same thing that you're condemning others for. And Celine never disrespected Whitney or her gift. Believe me, no one did more disrespecting of her divine gift than Whitney did. And Celine's BITTER because she never got to indulge in the excesses of show-business? That's so ridiculous that it's funny. Another point -- Celine's voice is aging naturally as most voices do--BUT, again, she did not smoke and snort her voice away like Whitney did. i just wish that celine, as well as all divas, could offer the rest of us some perspective on just how hard it it is to be acclaimed as the voice of a generation. whitney's story is about more than drugs. to put her in the same category as amy winehouse just reveals how little celine actually knows about what it means to be a diva. Again, there have been multiple "voices of generations" -- not all of them turned to drugs. And Celine also mentioned Elvis and Marilyn Monroe and Michael Jackson -- was it an insult to mention Whitney's name along with them as well? additionally: until celine is willing to speak openly about her vocal difficulties between 2000 - 2010 -- that shameful era of lipped tracks, smoke and mirrors, and lullaby albums -- she doesn't deserve the right to speak about what whitney also hid from her fans. i bet this is a tough time for celine, because to truly memorialize her colleague, she needs to break her own silence on the vocal abuse she herself suffered as a result of constant touring and her inability to say no (something that whitney talked about a lot before she shut herself away from the world). celine, the world needs you now. we need you to help us understand why whitney houston hid her suffering from the world. before you do that, however, you must be willing to be honest with us about what you've gone through. death demands sensitivity and love, not recrimination. Celine is not perfect. But you can't compare some of the missteps she took with the HUGE missteps that Whitney took. Celine NEVER abused her voice like Whitney did - she misused it in the early part of her career, yes, but then took steps to ensure that she would continue to have her voice -- the vocal exercises, not speaking for days when touring or recording, humidifiers, -- as long as possible. I'm not getting into the lipping issue again because although I hate it, it's a necessary evil IMO which is a minority opinion this board. Did saint Whitney ever do any of the above to ensure that her voice would endure? Not that I have seen or heard. And Celine HAS spoken about the difficulty she sometimes had with the dry desert air of Vegas. Nor was Whitney's suffering "hidden" from the world - the tabloids and news programs, the same ones now canonizing her, ran stories for YEARS about her abusive marriage, her drug use, miscarriages, rumors that she was a lesbian. We heard all about her erratic behavior, cancelling concerts and TV appearances, the drugs that were found in her luggage in Hawaii, and through it all we could hear her voice breaking down. Then there was "Being Bobby Brown". 'Nuff said. I am not bashing Whitney at all, though it may seem like it. But the facts are the facts -- that woman had a voice to make God himself weep, but for whatever reason, she squandered it. Yes, she's dead, and deserves respect for what she brought to the table, which I think Celine gave. But to me it is JUST as disrespectful to whitewash her mistakes and to sweep them under the rug, because just maybe a young singer will look at her life and say "I don't want to end up like her" and not make the same mistakes she did. THAT was what Celine was getting at -- we should be angry that this lifestyle seems to be getting a bigger body count than ever. Quote

fanchette Posted February 17, 2012 at 10:26 PM Posted February 17, 2012 at 10:26 PM Although I respect Celine, I have to agree with you here. What Celine doesn't understand is that Whitney was in abusive relationship for 15 years and she released her pain through drugs and alcohol which her husband got her into. Celine has been in a loving relationship and not been abused so she has no right to judge Whitney. Thus, I do think Celine's comments were out of line. Celine needs to respect Whitney for the amazing person she was and not judge her as there is only one Judge.personally, i found celine's comments really disappointing. whitney's death should have been a moment for divas around the world to come together, to remind the rest of us of just how hard it is to live under the vocal spotlight, to be expected to be perfect all the time. i was looking forward to a heartfelt, mature comment from celine and mariah, recognizing the cultural importance of whitney's passage. instead, celine chose to broadcast her ignorance and immaturity. she came across as bitchy, combative, and defensive - not exactly what you'd expect from the grand dame of the '90's diva mythology. whitney did not die of drugs; she died of shame, the shame of letting down her fans, destroying her gift, and having to endure the anxiety of her broken divahood in silence. we ought to be able to talk about divas with the respect they deserve, recognizing the incredible stress they must endure under the public spotlight. whitney was not a passive victim; she lived her life with intention, even when she was delusional. through it all, she retained the sublime dignity that god demands of all his divas. i don't mean to insult celine here. but she needs to recognize that she has an incredible responsibility right now. celine and mariah are the only two people alive on earth right now who truly know what whitney must have experienced in her career. if celine cannot understand this, then she doesn't deserve to be called a diva. the media is full of false rhetoric about whitney -- "whitney died of addiction, of her own mistakes," etc -- NO. whitney died of the impossible ideal of the diva; she very well may have killed herself after realizing that her voice was never going to get better. whitney and celine both share a gift from god, and it is against the basic law of the diva (as a sacred art) to disrespect the divine gifts of other divas. then again, maybe celine is just bitter that, even after following all the rules to the T -- never smoking, never indulging in cocaine, never partying in her 20's -- she still has to suffer from the same vocal difficulties that plagued whitney. i just wish that celine, as well as all divas, could offer the rest of us some perspective on just how hard it it is to be acclaimed as the voice of a generation. whitney's story is about more than drugs. to put her in the same category as amy winehouse just reveals how little celine actually knows about what it means to be a diva. please, celine. do something meaningful in honor of the life and art of your inspiration. make us cry, not cringe. additionally: until celine is willing to speak openly about her vocal difficulties between 2000 - 2010 -- that shameful era of lipped tracks, smoke and mirrors, and lullaby albums -- she doesn't deserve the right to speak about what whitney also hid from her fans. i bet this is a tough time for celine, because to truly memorialize her colleague, she needs to break her own silence on the vocal abuse she herself suffered as a result of constant touring and her inability to say no (something that whitney talked about a lot before she shut herself away from the world). celine, the world needs you now. we need you to help us understand why whitney houston hid her suffering from the world. before you do that, however, you must be willing to be honest with us about what you've gone through. death demands sensitivity and love, not recrimination. final point: celine and mariah need to get together to record a tribute song. at the very least they need to sit down for an interview together where they can express their feelings about whitney in a more measured setting. if this happens, i'd be in heaven... Would Whitney got into drugs if she was not in abusive relationship? If anyone ever has, one would understand that you want out of that pain. Thus, in Whitney's case, I don't know if it was the industry that got her down but her relationship. The one person she thought would love and support her abused her. That's the part that I don't think Celine understands. I undestand Celine is upset, as we all are, but I don't think she was as respectful as she could have been. Let Whitney rest! Celine was not criticizing at all! She mentions drugs in an interview after Whitney has passed away, a word synonymous with Whitney for years, yet Clive Davis comes out- who was her Svengali- and doesn't say anything about the dark side of the industry! fanchette Posted February 17, 2012 at 11:53 PM Posted February 17, 2012 at 11:53 PM I did not come here to argue. I am only stating my opinion. Drugs are not only evident in the music industry. They are everywhere. People are constantly being pulled in. I work in the music industry and have stayed away from all the 'bad' things. I guess my point of view is not getting across - drugs are not just in the music industry and celebrities are not the only ones who fall victim to drugs. Like I said before, Whitney I do not believe got into drugs just because she was in the music industry. That is ridiculous. Many people get into them to hide their emotional pain that comes from relationships, and so on. I think Celine's interview could have been more heartfelt instead of focusing on the music industry. Whitney was just a person like you and me and she should have focused on Whitney if she really cared. I am deeply saddened by Whitney's passing and I hope that she can receive the respect she deserves. That's it. Quote
puttybuddy Posted February 18, 2012 at 12:11 AM Posted February 18, 2012 at 12:11 AM I'm sorry but I can't criticize Celine for anything she said. She spoke very well of Whitney and soon after I think she got caught up in her emotions and was speaking out of anger about loosing one of her idols. Robin Roberts and others claim that through the years family has been there for Whitney. Even they couldn't help her. She had a beautiful daughter to think about. Bottom line, she chose drugs over family! Other artist have even called her a copout, a coward! So don't be dissing Celine. Quote The greatest voice ever! ♥
Dion-Mania! Posted February 18, 2012 at 12:14 AM Posted February 18, 2012 at 12:14 AM Noone is arguing here. Of course drugs are omnipresent, permeating all sectors of society. But the interview was about Whitney's death. And I think any other bona fide superstar like Celine, who has been in the music idustry for a long time, would have mentioned drugs at some point during the interview. Annie Lennox mentioned her demons in her Facebook release upon the death of Whitney. Celine's problem is that she is overly wrought when emotional and her command of the English Language is not adept enough to convey her meaning very well. Like everyone when they heard the news of her passing, the first thing they thought was drugs was the cause. Trust me, I aint arguing with anyone here, i'm just giving my opinion here too. What I got from the interview was that she was thinking more about the fact that one of her heroes is gone than giving condolences...she puts other people first so much, I think we should let her have this "selfish" moment. She is a human being, after all, and no human is perfect. She can't be sweet and caring all the time, no matter how much we want her to be. Quote "The measure of love is to love without measure." ferjaacu Posted February 18, 2012 at 12:31 AM Posted February 18, 2012 at 12:31 AM Let's see... 1st: Whitney was into drugs before meeting Bobby, she said so herself. Another thing, most of the people who suffer abuse in marriage or in any kind of relationship (even the bullied), have emotional problems from way before and that's why they carry on with that relantioship, or let people keep intimidating them knowing that what they're going through is not right. 2nd: Celine didn't say "Whitney died because of drugs" or anything like that. She was talking about everything Whitney went through, everything she was away from because of drugs in the past, everything she lost. She couldn't enjoy much of her daughter because of that, because of being during the hardest times of her addiction and because of having in rehab, wich was sad cause we know Whitney loved Bobbi Chris very much. 3rd: Celine is a person herself too, and she was a big fan of Whitney. She said she loved Whitney, that she wanted to sing like her, be like her, etc. many times, even in that interview, and was sad and angry cause she lost another of her biggest idols and peers, knowing that both of them suffered of similar things. After saying that, she spoke about things she was angry for. She said "taking pills to wake up, taking pills to go to bed, etc." and most of the famous singers do that, cause they get really tired but they must go on, cause the INDUSTRY (we the fans and the managers, record company's executives, producers, etc) demand them to do so and to always give us their best. And drugs have been always related with Hollywood and that's what Celine was talking about. And even after Whitney's dead, we still haven't learned. You still demand things to Celine, that she HAS to say this, she HAS to do that. And at the same time, speak about how much Divas suffer because of that !! Dion-Mania! Posted February 18, 2012 at 12:46 AM Posted February 18, 2012 at 12:46 AM This is what I wrote up on my Facebook upon hearing the news of Whitney's death.... AND IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII.....relax i'm not gonna start singing Whitney! From a fresh faced, talented Ingenue, plucked from adolescence and catapulted to superstardom by that Svengali Clive Davis, to marrying a cad and descending into drugs and Diva-dom (thereby losing a pristine voice) and arriving at a tragic end- Whitney Houston really did almost have it all... I think it's pretty accurate. In many ways, she was a reluctant celebrity. Quote

Dion1st Posted February 18, 2012 at 02:28 AM Posted February 18, 2012 at 02:28 AM Let's see... Thank you ferjaacu for saying what one would think should be obvious. It's so sadly ironic and sickening how someone here would attack Celine on her heartfelt words and then they themself have the nerve to make demands on what Celine has to say and do and even who to record a song with to prove herself to be somehow worthy of expressing her sadness at WH's death. This is a tragic event in the life and death of Whitney Houston. I just get so fed up with people using Celine as a punching bag. eyso Posted February 18, 2012 at 03:52 AM Posted February 18, 2012 at 03:52 AM all that i was trying to say was that if celine takes her position in the media seriously, she ought to have planned her comments a little better before she gave them. the way it turned out, celine ended up coming across as a diva of the worst type -- the type of diva that uses the downfall of other divas as a chance to brag about how perfect she is (unlike whitney). also, i don't buy into the narrative that "whitney died of drugs." whitney died for many reasons, and we may not know for awhile whether or not this was actually an OD. we ought to be able to reserve judgment until whitney's family is ready s ready to release the full report. until then, comments like those celine made are pretty much totally out of line. talking about how celine doesn't party, doesn't do drugs, etc, while true to a certain extent, was just not necessary! eyso Posted February 18, 2012 at 04:01 AM Posted February 18, 2012 at 04:01 AM also, to be perfectly blunt, what does celine even know about drug use in the industry? would she like to enlighten us as to the way it works? or is she just an ignorant bystander criticizing a culture she knows nothing about...? my guess is that drugs is not just an an industry exclusive problem. there are plenty of high profile celebrities who are sober, and many more who are into coke, pot, pills, etc; but that doesn't mean there's some shadowy conspiracy. pop stars do drugs because of the incredible pressure put on them by the record companies to live their lives under the constant media spotlight, to watch everything they do for signs of negative messaging, etc. it's also tough to have to go through endless touring that puts strain on your vocal and emotional health. if only people like celine could help us to understand how whitney's drug use was connected to the way the record biz raised her to such a high pedestal...that maybe for whitney, drug use was her only way to reclaim her ability to live freely and without the anxiety of always trying to be best. this is a complicated problem we are only now beginning to realize the full breadth of. on a deeper cultural level, though, it would be nice if the other '90's divas could rise to the occasion and inspire some sympathy for what whitney must have gone through back in the '90's. but then again, celine doesn't have a clue what she's talking about here because, as she said "she doesn't do parties." Alex_Incognito Posted February 18, 2012 at 04:17 AM Posted February 18, 2012 at 04:17 AM (edited) You need to relisten to the interview because you CLEARLY have NO IDEA what was said and what she meant by what she said. The only thing that's clear is what you WANT her to have said. You are clearly here for one reason. Dion-Mania! Posted February 18, 2012 at 04:27 AM Posted February 18, 2012 at 04:27 AM I have a feeling this topic maybe closed if such ramblings keep going on! Celine not have a clue? No, she wouldn't know the tremendous pressure of celebrity life and having to give it your all everytime you have to step on stage. And i'm sure she wouldn't have a clue about what goes on in the celebrity world apropos drugs etc. Celine simply gave her opinion on drugs in the entertainment industry. Us mere mortals know it goes on, so why would Celine be clueless about it? She gave her opinion on why Whitney died. Whether it was drugs or not, it will be drug related. Anyone would think she went on live TV and revealed to the world that Whitney took drugs, or that she called her a junkie! I, personally, am delighted that Celine has never gotten into any of the shadier sides of the Entertainment Industry. If keeping her voice in pristine condition means leading the life of a nun....hey! i'm cool with that Quote
