Celine's voice

I think her voice now, since her Oprah 2010 appearence where she sang Hallelujah was and is better than the Taking Chances area. I think her voice now is closer to 2002/A New Day Has Come, with the new sharpness than she had in the mid 90's. Taking Chances area was nasally. She isn't as nasal as she was then, I think the vocal rest, and definantly the training helped.

In some ways, and some songs I think she sounds more powerful than ever- WDMHBN, Goldfinger, POL end note, The Reason [lipped or not they sound better today than every, in my opinion.] Her voice has a fluidity and grace than was previously lacking.

Anyway, her version of Hallelujah is really something...i love how celine sings it..i hope she'll do a recording studio of that songgg..

As people have said, her voice has changed with each album; I think that "colour" is so attractive, and its definitely a valuable tool when so many of your songs deal with the same themes [i.e. love, heartbreak, hurt, romance]. I think fluidity is a great term to describe her voice - other terms I'd use are adaptable, diverse, controlled.

What I admire about Celine is that when she's on the money, she has immense control - she can dictate to her voice exactly what she wants to, and she can make it sound exactly how she wants it to, for the most part - its why she's so widely lauded by other great singers. Yes, her voice is exceptionally powerful, loud and rangey, but its the control that gains admiration from her peers/contemporaries.

Anyway, her voice nowadays is as good as it was in 2003, not quite as good as it was in 2002. Its probably the best she's sounded for the last half-decade, and is definitely a step in the right direction. However, she'll never gain the power back she had in the 90's - I'm afraid from here on in, nature takes over - however, her voice will age with grace, fortune and texture. She'll make use of the diversity I mentioned earlier, and this is the very reason why in 30 years time, at the age of 70, Celine will sound exceptional, just like her idol, Barbra Streisand. She knows how to use her voice, and understands that it isn't just about who can scream the loudest, or the longest, or the highest.

Bow down to Celine Dion - the greatest singer, certainly of my lifetime, and potentially of all-time!

Céline Dion, music's greatest ever singer, the biggest-selling Canadian artist of all-time and most successful female live act ever - what's not to love?

Yes, I love that post wjd!

Of course Celine's voice HAS changed, more than once even. Everybody's voice changes as years go by. It hasn't always been as strong as for exapmle in the 90s, especially during the first Vegas run and the TC tour, when she strained it a lot. But now... I think it's better than ever. It seems lower, deeper, but it's not weaker than ever! It's very strong and she does have immense control over it. It's different, but SOOOO GOOD! I hope she will manage to take care of herself and keep it that way as long as possible.

agreed..you can feel that when she sings I'm alive, the power of love, because you loved me and my heart will go on...

but her recent voice is perfect to sing songs like River deep mountain high, i drove all night.

i think her recent voice will be great to sing those powerful songs...

the vocal changes she went through:

1981-1989

1990-1992: voice maturing and upper range extending

1993-1996: the purest voice ever heard

1997-1999: more color and richness to her voice

2000-2003: clarity of yesteryear back and apparent after the break

2004-2009: worse vocal era she experienced

2010-now: better than last era, but anyone who suggests it was as good or clear as 2002 really must be deaf. She still has the best voice in the business, but her voice lost a lot of her clarity and purity in tone, to be replaced with a deeper richer voice. All those changes are due to age, wearing the voice down after more than 1500 concerts, and vegas. I just simply dislike vegas because of the damage it did to her voice, and the singing technique tics that she learned there and kept for many years, which somehow decreased at the beginning of this run. i have a feeling though that they will come back when we go further into this run

I understand, as a fan, not loving Celine performing so often in Vegas. I'm sure it did take a permanent toll on her voice from the A New Day… show. But they are going about this new show in the right way. It's less shows. She has the humidity constantly surrounding her. And she lips syncs some of the more vocally grueling songs…. which is GOOD for her vocal longevity.

I am thrilled with Celine's voice right now. I have really liked elements of her voice throughout each "era". Right now we are getting different elements from each era. It's wonderful. :)

I agree that she was vocally weakest from 2004 through 2009. I think she just had to find ways to get through her songs without damaging her voice. And that often resulted in some nasality… which was even apparent on the Taking Chances album.

I hope her voice stays in the fantastic shape it's in now for the new English and French albums.

IMO, the voice she had back in the 90's was powerful, beautiful and raw, but her voice was also kinda uncontrollable.

Celine voice right now is refined.

But i like the raw power of her voice way back.

I disagree about her voice being "uncontrollable". Celine's voice in the 1990s was untouchable. She was at her peak as far as total vocal ability. Listen to her sing "I Can't Help Falling In Love" or watch her recording session for "The Reason". Total and complete CONTROL. As someone mentioned before, she will reach these pockets of time where if she can dream a vocal acrobat, she can perform a vocal acrobat. And that was most of the 1990s.

Now, this may be a little off topic but I just want to give you an example with another singer. When I heard some of Whitney's 80s songs, it wasn't easy for me to believe that it's actually her singing. The voice seemed to me very different from how she sounded in the 90s. So everyone's voice changes as time goes by. For me, the best period for Celine vocally was from about 1993 to 1999. Edited by Bell

What i meant by a bit uncontrollable is her voice tries to sound louder. I think she tried to really break her limits, trying to hit notes more than she could do (liek river deepp, mountain high, let's talke about love, the reason, etc). i've heard her belting like the notes were flat. but when i heard TC album (except for "A Song For You which i begin to like slowly and slowly. lol. :-D ), i believe she has hit all the notes right and that she sang the songs properly.

But well, i guess i shouldn't have used the word uncontrollable.

so yeah not "uncontrollable" but I don't know what word should i use to describe it.

Sum this all up: HER voice is different in 2011 vs 1997, and thats normal if it was the same i'd be worried she was some kind of freak of nature.

Of couse her voice has changed... Even though some people don't believe, Céline IS A HUMAN BEING!!! She is not a machine and everything that happens TO YOU also happens TO HER... You get old, your voice change and so does hers... It doesn't mean she's not good anymore. She STILL IS the best and her voice still chills me. And THIS IS something will never change... I will always be proud of that woman and that artist.

Céline é a LEGEND!

THE ONE AND ONLY!!!

Deeper voice from Celine=Maturity of her voice.

Besides,I think Celine's nasal singing is something unique.Regine crespin said her nasal singing is comparable to an oboe.
