Bralo20 Posted December 2, 2010 at 10:01 AM Posted December 2, 2010 at 10:01 AM The ATSB, the Australian Civilian Air Safety Board has revealed details about the mid-air engine blow out (uncontained engine failure like it's called) with the A380 from Qantas several weeks ago. It appears that a fault was discovered in the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 series engine, a faulty installed part caused a oil leak and an oil burn which then caused the uncontained engine failure. ATSB requires the operators of the Trent engines to check their engines for the new discovered fault within 2 flightcycles. The mandatory checks every 20 flight cycles issued by EASA (European authorities) remains in place. Following this Qantas is determined to seek compensation with Rolls-Royce for all the costs they had due the incident and the fault. Quote ...
Bellamy Posted December 2, 2010 at 02:43 PM Posted December 2, 2010 at 02:43 PM I heard Rolls-Royce had already paid tens of million dollars to exchange the faulty parts. Guess they had to pay more. ddmone99 Posted December 5, 2010 at 11:51 PM Posted December 5, 2010 at 11:51 PM I wanted to know what overseas airplanes are like. Are they similar to regular airplanes! Quote You'll never see the courage i know. It's colours richness won't appear within your view. I'll never glow the way that you glow. Your presence dominates the judgements made on you. But as the scenery grows, I see in different lights. The shades and shadow undulate in my perception. My feelings swell and strech, I see from greater heights. I understand what I am still too proud to mention to you. You'll say you understand. But you don't understand. You'll say you'd never give up seeing eye to eye. But never is a promise and you can't afford to lie. You'll never touch the things that I hold. The skin of my emotions lies beneath my own. You'll never feel the heat of this soul. My fever burns me deeper than I've ever shown. But as the scenery grows, I see in different lights. The shades and shadows undulate in my perception. My feelings swell and strech, I see from greater heights. I realize what i am now too smart to mention to you. You'll say you understand. You'll never understand. I'll say I'll never wake up knowing how or why. I don't know what to believe in. You don't know who I am. You'll say I need appeasing when i start to cry. But never is a promise and I'll never need a lie. Never Is A Promise-Fiona Apple
Bralo20 Posted December 6, 2010 at 11:10 AM Posted December 6, 2010 at 11:10 AM I wanted to know what overseas airplanes are like. Are they similar to regular airplanes! OK... First, there are no planes like "overseas" airplanes Second, it's quite complicated Let's start with the basics and stay with the jet engined planes currently used. (A plane can have either jet engines or it can have propeller engines but since most commercial planes have jet engines we will stay with that) The basics: 1) Short haul planes, Medium haul planes & long haul planes In general you will have short, medium and long haul planes. Short haul planes are mostly used for short regional flights, medium haul planes are used for longer routes that within a certain part of the world and are capable of carrying more people then regional jets. Long haul planes are capable of carrying more people over a further distance. 2) Narrow body & wide body jets Within the short, medium and long haul planes you can devide the planes in narrow or wide body jets. A narrow body jet is a plane with a single aisle while a wide body jet has 2 aisles in the plane. Now you can have a narrow body jet with capable of flying long haul routes but you can also have wide body jets only capable of flying medium haul routes. Still with me? So let's specify a bit further: An example of a short range narrow body jet is for example the Embraer ERJ-135 or ERJ-145. While being a jet, it is only capable of flying a limited amount of people (depending on the seating configuration up to 50 people) over a limited range. Such planes are used on routes that don't require the big capacity but rather require frequency. Such planes don't burn to much of fuel and are quite efficient on short haul routes. While having only a limited range they can however fly overseas. For example, their are routes between Belgium and the UK that are flewn with a regional jet like the Embraer ERJ. But, there is a limitation on how far they can fly overseas but I'll come back to that later. A step up in the medium haul, narrow body jet. Those planes, like the Boeing 737 series and the Boeing A320 family are capable to lift more capacity (up to let's say about 215 people depending on which series and which seating configuration) over a longer route. This is the typical jet you'll see flying across the USA, accros Europe, Asia, etc... These birds can lift a substancial number of people over an extended route. Also, these planes can fly overseas and yet a limitation on how far they can fly overseas is provided. However, some of those planes can receive a certification to fly further from land, this is called a ETOPS or in the future LROPS certification. But I'll come back to that later. Some series of the same range of planes are capable to fly long range routes. An example of this is the Boeing 737-700ER (also known as the Boeing 737-700IGW or the Boeing BBJ1) which is capable of flying long range routes up to 5.500nm (about 10.000km). Also Airbus has such a plane, the Airbus A319LR is capable of flying up to 5.600nm (10.500km). Besides the medium haul, narrow body jets you'll have also the medium range wide body jets. Some series of the Boeing 767 and in the past also the Airbus A300/A310 series can be optimised for use on medium haul routes. Also several series of the Boeing 747 (the jumbo jet) were made for short to medium range use. The Boeing 747-400D for example was developped for use on high density short to medium haul routes in Japan, before that you'll had short to medium haul versions of the Boeing 747-100, the 747-200 and the 747-300. Boeing will not make a short to medium range version of his newest flagship the Boeing 747-8i. Even the Boeing 777-200 is sometimes exclusively used for medium routes (examples of that you can find plenty in the USA with United Airlines for example). Like said, also those planes can fly overseas but yet limited although for some of them a ETOPS/LROPS certification is possible. The Boeing 757 falls somewhere in between of all the types I'm specifying. The Boeing 757 was originally made for cross continent operations like the transcontinental flights in the USA (for example JFK-LAX), though being a single aisle plane it had a range which isn't medium haul but also not long haul, it's maybe a category on itself. Thanks to the range the planes were also used for operations overseas and thus they can also be certified for ETOPS/LROPS. On top of the list you'll have the long range wide body jets. Examples are the Boeing 747, 767, 777 and the new 787 series. All those are long range, wide body jets capable of carrying a substantial number of people over an extended range. With Airbus you'll have the Airbus A330, A340, A380 and the upcomming A350 series. All those all capable to fly overseas some with a ETOPS/LROPS certification, some without it. Planes with more then 2 engines like the Boeing 747 and the Airbus A340 & A380 aren't required to be ETOPS/LROPS certified. Now, what makes a plane certified to fly overseas or not? First, a plane with more then 2 engines can fly wherever they want within it's operating limits. Planes with only 2 engines have to be certified for overwater operations. This is called ETOPS or LROPS. ETOPS is an abbrevation for Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards which will be changed in the future into LROPS (Long Range Operational Performance Standards). Since it's a bit to detailed I'm not going to write down what ETOPS certification requires but in general ETOPS180 is the standard. The "180" stands for the amount of minutes that a plane can fly from the nearest airport to which it can divert to. So in general, a plane certified with ETOPS180 can fly anywhere where it wants as long as it doesn't fly further then 180 minutes of the nearest (capable) airport it can divert to. I hope it makes some things clear, if not, don't hesitate to ask Quote ...

I wouldn't say it's a matter of having nerves of steel, it's a matter of being completely stupid. But maybe I have a different opinion, I have friends who were blown over by jet blasts one was picked up and thrown, and I've been hit hard by mild jet blast and know, you can be in BIG trouble if you're in the wrong spot at the wrong time. robert sadler Posted April 5, 2011 at 11:40 AM Author Posted April 5, 2011 at 11:40 AM I have always wondered if Celine has had ago at flying lessons does anyone know?An interesting statement on airline.net a young lady in india has become the first youngest airline captain for kingfisher airlines and is reported to be the youngest captain in the world. Its amazing on what people can do and achieve if they put there heart and soul to the career and what a future she has. > MUMBAI > Report21-year-old Marol girl youngest commander in the world Bavicca Bharathi, has become the youngest commander in the world at the age of 21. The record was earlier held by captain Nivedita Bhasin of Indian Airlines who achieved it at the age of 23. The young girl from Marol, Andheri (East) flew her first flight IT 2439/2440 with Kingfisher Airlines (KFA) on December 29.Employed with Kingfisher Airlines (KFA) since July 2007, Bavicca flew an ATR-72-500 with more than 50 passengers on Bangalore-Hyderabad-Bangalore route. So how does this youngest commander with 2400 hours of flying feel of her achievement? “I feel happy and proud of this achievement. I am thankful to God for giving me this opportunity. It makes me feel very responsible,” says Bavicca.“The safety of my aircraft and passengers is foremost in my mind. But I also remembered all those who helped me in making the day possible especially my parents, instructors,” she adds. Bavicca had been making waves since May 2007 when she became the youngest commercial pilot license (CPL) holder at the age of 18 and then the youngest advanced training pilot license (ATPL) holder in 2010 whilst being employed with KFA as a co-pilot. Being an avid planner who has charted every record she wants to break. “After this I wish to be the youngest check pilot, instructor and so on,” she speaks of her next move. Bavicca and her Mother Judith (43) made news in 2007 when they got their CPL together. Both of them then thought of making another record by flying together some day. “As my mother is a co-pilot in Kingfisher in the same fleet, my next aim is to fly with her. She can be the co-pilot and I, the captain,” she says. Mind you this intelligent girl not only takes pride in flying planes but also enjoys diverse interests. “I enjoy painting, singing carnatic and playing the piano. I recently passed Grade 5 Piano from Trinity College, London.Besides flying, I am doing my Masters in Business Administration from a very reputed university in USA,” she says.
