The instrument rated captain was not injured. The airplane was registered to and operated by a private individual dba Santa Claus as a nonscheduled international cargo flight. Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident, with snowfall. The pilot reported that there was snow and ice on the runway. He reported that a strong crosswind gust forced the experimental airplane to veer off the left side of the runway where the it struck runway lights. The pilot managed to get the SuperSleigh back on the runway and stop.A postaccident inspection of the airplane revealed minor damage and the flight was able to continue after repairs. Observers questioned the weight and balance data reported by the pilot who said "his wife and the elves" had prepared the manifest for him and that he had not personally verified the calculations. I get that they're probably trying to re-brand after money issues...but that's a classic look that they're getting rid of.I would of felt the same about British Airways when they did there, shall I say stupid colour schemes a few years back It was much to be desired indeed.Yes I would agree there was some nice colours but It to me it did not inspire me much.I personnelly was not impressed with it being as a National British Airline,I believe they even almost lost there status at one time with the colour there silly colours scheme, so they decided to go back to the British Flag on the tail. I would guess new colour schemes can grow on us I do like the new american airlines colours but at what as you say at what cost for the traveller themselves I ask? robert sadler Posted March 4, 2013 at 04:06 PM Author Posted March 4, 2013 at 04:06 PM (edited) Hi,Going through my you tube clips and having a tidy up which I must have millions of in aviation thought you aviation enthusiasts might be interest in came across these clips where all the plane spend there final hours, seems such a shame and a waste http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOEyz_gsr_s and finally i read about this the famous gimli glider is up for auction, any one want a bit of aviation history, please lets not scap this aircraft.Perhap Celine and rene may take an interest in this make it into some sort of museum piece for everyone to see.looks like some has done it with the usair flight 1549 into the hudson http://www.thestar.c...or_auction.htmlIf so, you're in luck: The infamous Air Canada Boeing 767 that made history as the Gimli Glider is up for auction in April. But you'll need to have a bit of money in your bank account.Terry Lobzun, of Collector Car Productions, the company holding the auction via a video presentation at the Toronto Classic Car Auction on April 14, said the aircraft's owners are expecting to get from $2.75 million to $3 million for it."It can be flyable and it can be delivered," Lobzun said on Thursday from the company's offices in Blenheim, Ont."To get it back into service, they'd have to jump through some hoops and it probably wouldn't be economically feasible, but it can be flyable to deliver it to be put on display. It would be nice to see it at the Western Canada Aviation Museum or Gimli."But if it went to Gimli, you'd just have to let the motorsport people know it's coming this time," he said laughing. The plane is currently housed at a facility in California. The aircraft gained fame when, because of a fuel conversion error between metric and imperial units, not enough fuel was taken on before it was bound for Edmonton on July 23, 1983.The plane's engines ran out of fuel at 41,000 feet and the powerless plane was glided to the former air force base in Gimli, forcing spectators at a drag strip to get out of the way. Nobody was injured. The aircraft flew regularly until it was retired from service in 2008.If the plane returns to Manitoba, it probably won't be parked at the aviation museum.Shirley Render, the museum's executive director, said while the plane landed in Gimli with empty fuel tanks almost 30 years ago, it is still too new for their collection."It's too much on what people fly today," Render said."Our focus is on the old planes which people don't know too much about... it would be lovely but it wouldn't be on our dream list." riobeard11 Posted March 10, 2013 at 12:58 AM Posted March 10, 2013 at 12:58 AM Had lunch at the park at the end of runway 19 at DCA today. Too bad they were taking off on 1 instead of landing on 19, but it was still nice. The MD 88/90s really rumble the ground right there when they take off - SO much louder than any other aircraft leaving the airport. Could also see a few heavies taking off at Andrews AFB in the distance, but not close enough to snap a picture. Quote

riobeard11 Posted July 6, 2013 at 07:56 PM Posted July 6, 2013 at 07:56 PM (edited) A 777 has crashed at San Francisco this afternoon - from what I'm seeing on the news it looks like the plane came down and had a tailstrike VERY early on the runway. It looks like the people were able to get off safely, but the plane is completely trashed at this point. Hopefully news will come in and everyone was okay... http://www.cnn.com/2....html?hpt=hp_t1 Edit: It looks like initial reports are that everyone survived If you look at the speeds on the chart on flightaawea it looks like the plane was going WAY too slow before it landed. I'd bet it stalled and that's why the tail hit the runway at the beginning. http://flightaawea.com/live/flight/AAR214/history/20130706/0730Z/RKSI/KSFO/tracklog Edited July 6, 2013 at 08:35 PM by riobeard11 Quote
