Looks like he didn't think the engines would throttle up as quickly as they did, but yeah he did just continue without any other problems. I hate flying in MD88/90s - I don't like the way they fly haha.

That 737 above went WAY off the runway! And that 747 pilot didn't know that the crews were down there? How do you forget that? Isn't there a nosewheel camera on the 747 that they should have been able to see the crews down there?

on the boeing 747,clip what happened was on normal procedures if the docking system has failured or with most airlines there is a policy to have a secondary visual aid when having to tow aircraft onto stand, at the the head of the stand with someone marshalling bats cross{showing pilots brakes on until ground crew are ready to tow on}but you will notice the ground crew have not finished connecting the tug and bar and the marshaller marshaller leaves the head of the stand to early.

Type:Test flight Santa SuperSleigh 100F

Operator: Private, dba Santa Claus

Registration: NP-001

C/n / msn: SS100-01

Fatalities: Fatalities: 0 / Occupants: 1

Other fatalities: 0

Airplane damage: Minor

Location: North Pole Cargoport Airfield - North Pole

Phase: Take off

Nature: Cargo

Departure airport: North Pole Cargoport Airfield

Destination airport: top secret

Narrative:

Test flight reindeer-powered experimental Santa SuperSleigh 100F, sustained minor damage when it veered off the left side of runway 31 during its takeoff at the North Pole Cargoport Airfield, North Pole, and struck runway lights. The instrument rated captain was not injured. The airplane was registered to and operated by a private individual dba Santa Claus as a nonscheduled international cargo flight. Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident, with snowfall.

The pilot reported that there was snow and ice on the runway. He reported that a strong crosswind gust forced the experimental airplane to veer off the left side of the runway where the it struck runway lights. The pilot managed to get the SuperSleigh back on the runway and stop.

A postaccident inspection of the airplane revealed minor damage and the flight was able to continue after repairs. Observers questioned the weight and balance data reported by the pilot who said "his wife and the elves" had prepared the manifest for him and that he had not personally verified the calculations.

Sources:

Had the left reindeer been properly fed, deiced, and heated?

I saw this on the news yesterday! Not a good start at all. The plane has had a lot of delays as it is getting out on the market...do you think they rushed a few things?

Posted

Yep I would feel they may of rushed into releasing to soon with the teething problems before the aircraft even got released and the pressure from the airlines on delays Its starting look that way they rushed into it.lets hope they can resolve the problems before the new Airbus A350 comes out because Airbus are already given Boeing a run for there money as it is already.

Airbus :kicking: vs Boeing :ranting:

Looks like the FAA grounded all 787s today! :nono: It's not something to rush when it comes to an airliner like this!

I think Airbus planes fly better than Boeing lately. Maybe I'm becoming an Airbus fan :P

Why ruining a classic?? ugh! I hope they realize how awful it is and they change it back...

I would of felt the same about British Airways when they did there, shall I say stupid colour schemes a few years back It was much to be desired indeed.Yes I would agree there was some nice colours but It to me it did not inspire me much.

I personnelly was not impressed with it being as a National British Airline,I believe they even almost lost there status at one time with the colour there silly colours scheme, so they decided to go back to the British Flag on the tail. I would guess new colour schemes can grow on us I do like the new american airlines colours but at what as you say at what cost for the traveller themselves I ask?

Hi,Going through my you tube clips and having a tidy up which I must have millions of in aviation thought you aviation enthusiasts might be interest in came across these clips where all the plane spend there final hours, seems such a shame and a waste

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOEyz_gsr_s

and finally i read about this the famous gimli glider is up for auction, any one want a bit of aviation history, please lets not scap this aircraft.Perhap Celine and rene may take an interest in this make it into some sort of museum piece for everyone to see.

looks like some has done it with the usair flight 1549 into the hudson

http://www.thestar.c...or_auction.html

If so, you're in luck: The infamous Air Canada Boeing 767 that made history as the Gimli Glider is up for auction in April.

But you'll need to have a bit of money in your bank account.

Terry Lobzun, of Collector Car Productions, the company holding the auction via a video presentation at the Toronto Classic Car Auction on April 14, said the aircraft's owners are expecting to get from $2.75 million to $3 million for it.

"It can be flyable and it can be delivered," Lobzun said on Thursday from the company's offices in Blenheim, Ont.

"To get it back into service, they'd have to jump through some hoops and it probably wouldn't be economically feasible, but it can be flyable to deliver it to be put on display. It would be nice to see it at the Western Canada Aviation Museum or Gimli.

"But if it went to Gimli, you'd just have to let the motorsport people know it's coming this time," he said laughing.

The plane is currently housed at a facility in California.

The aircraft gained fame when, because of a fuel conversion error between metric and imperial units, not enough fuel was taken on before it was bound for Edmonton on July 23, 1983.

The plane's engines ran out of fuel at 41,000 feet and the powerless plane was glided to the former air force base in Gimli, forcing spectators at a drag strip to get out of the way. Nobody was injured.

The aircraft flew regularly until it was retired from service in 2008.

If the plane returns to Manitoba, it probably won't be parked at the aviation museum.

Shirley Render, the museum's executive director, said while the plane landed in Gimli with empty fuel tanks almost 30 years ago, it is still too new for their collection.

"It's too much on what people fly today," Render said.

"Our focus is on the old planes which people don't know too much about... it would be lovely but it wouldn't be on our dream list."

Had lunch at the park at the end of runway 19 at DCA today. Too bad they were taking off on 1 instead of landing on 19, but it was still nice. The MD 88/90s really rumble the ground right there when they take off - SO much louder than any other aircraft leaving the airport.

Could also see a few heavies taking off at Andrews AFB in the distance, but not close enough to snap a picture.

In all the years I have seen photos and video clips of the famous st marteen and the beach you will see the aircraft is about to land well before or bang on the piano keys where the touch down point I believe is a further 50 yards after that, where the aircraft is photoed it should be i guess at least 100 ft not 10 ft over the beach.spot on pilot good flying

A 777 has crashed at San Francisco this afternoon - from what I'm seeing on the news it looks like the plane came down and had a tailstrike VERY early on the runway.

It looks like the people were able to get off safely, but the plane is completely trashed at this point. Hopefully news will come in and everyone was okay...

http://www.cnn.com/2....html?hpt=hp_t1

Edit: It looks like initial reports are that everyone survived

If you look at the speeds on the chart on flightaawea it looks like the plane was going WAY too slow before it landed. I'd bet it stalled and that's why the tail hit the runway at the beginning.
