robert sadler Posted December 9, 2009 at 12:14 AM Posted December 9, 2009 at 12:14 AM Further bad news for the aviation industry which will put a dampner on christmas 70 staff, will be made redundant as of today a whole airport has closed Coventry airport uk.Coventry had a fairly busy cargo operation with up to 15 cargo flights mainly at night rangeing from small twins to boeing 737s then they did have charters and executive flight with possible world wide destinations.also scheduled flight operated tompson, wizz flights to european destinations i believe air atlantic have a large operation there with dc3/dc4/dc6 a/c plus few flying schools and a big aviation museum and many more businesses relay on coventry.last summer you would on average see upto 30-40 flight movements a day about 500.000 passengers in one year i think was reported if not more. I think there may be plans for someone to buy the airport but i am not sure lets hopes this happens I hope this airport will not go to waste it will be a shame. medley Posted April 18, 2010 at 02:30 AM Posted April 18, 2010 at 02:30 AM Oh yeah, the volcanic ash. Just heard about that recently. Apparently, the ash can get caught in plane engines and clog them, which is why its not worth the risk to fly through that stuff. Quote

winforlife Posted April 18, 2010 at 03:37 AM Posted April 18, 2010 at 03:37 AM I wonder if my daughter's flight to the UK will still be scedules on Tuesday since the volcano seems to be active as of today. It could last indefinitely. Does anyone remember or reading about Mount St Helens ( Washington State) erupting in 1980? The pollution effected the entire US and portions of Europe. The main reason for canceling flights is the ash from the volcano can cause the engines to shut down. In 1991, a commercial airliner flew over a volcano in the Philippines that had erupted spewing ash in the air. It also caused global temperatures to drop by about 1°F (0.5°C) for two years. robert sadler Posted April 19, 2010 at 06:02 PM Author Posted April 19, 2010 at 06:02 PM This is latest from nats. NATS:The UK's leading Air Navigation Services ProviderTemporary updates page Please note: Due to heavy web traffic, the normal site is currently offline. This is a holding page to provide updates on the Icelandic volcanic eruption. You can still access http://www.natsservices.com, http://natscareers.co.uk, and http://www.customer.nats.co.uk as normal. NB Passengers seeking flight updates should consult the websites of their Airlines directly. Statement on Icelandic volcanic eruption: Monday April 19, 1530 The volcanic eruption has reduced and the volcano is not currently emitting ash to altitudes that will affect the UK. Assuming there are no further significant ash emissions we are now looking at a continuously improving situation. Based on the latest information from the Met Office, NATS advises that the restrictions currently in place across UK controlled airspace will remain in place until 0700 (local time) tomorrow, Tuesday. From 0700 (local time) tomorrow, Tuesday, Scottish airspace will be open, and south to a line between Teesside and Blackpool. Mainland Scottish airports will be open. This is a dynamic and changing situation and is therefore difficult to forecast beyond 0700 local; however, the latest Met Office advice is that the contaminated area will continue to move south with the possibility that restrictions to airspace above England and Wales, including the London area, may be lifted later tomorrow (Tuesday). We will continue to monitor Met Office information and review our arrangements in line with that. We will advise further arrangements at approximately 2100 (local time), today. It is now for airports and airlines to decide how best to utilise this opportunity. Passengers should contact their airlines to find out how this will affect their travel plans. Previous updates >> About NATS NATS handled 2.2 million flights in 2009, covering the UK and eastern North Atlantic, that carried more than 200 million passengers safely through some of the busiest and most complex airspace in the world.NATS provides en route air traffic control from its centres at Swanwick, Hampshire and Prestwick, Ayrshire.NATS also provides air traffic control services at 15 of the nation's major airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow, together with air traffic services at Gibraltar Airport.Useful links Met Office: Icelandic volcano eruptionCAA: Latest volcanic ash informationCAA Info Alert: Volcanic Hazards and Aviation SafetyNATS: The UK's leading Air Navigation Services Provider Quote CELINE HAS AND ALWAYS WILL WIN THE HEARTS OF MILLIONS,CELINE RULES
ladylindsey Posted April 19, 2010 at 06:06 PM Posted April 19, 2010 at 06:06 PM So there's improvement? I saw a report that this volcano last erupted in the 1820 somethins and erupted for 2 yrs straight! Dear Volcano- turn your frown upside down and go back to sleep! haha Quote
Bralo20 Posted April 19, 2010 at 09:54 PM Posted April 19, 2010 at 09:54 PM Statement on Icelandic volcanic eruption: Monday April 19, 2200 Since our last statement at 1530 today, the volcano eruption in Iceland has strengthened and a new ash cloud is spreading south and east towards the UK. This demonstrates the dynamic and rapidly changing conditions in which we are working. Latest information from the Met Office shows that the situation is worsening in some areas. Based on this information, the situation for Northern Irish airports for the morning is uncertain, due to the new ash cloud. The latest information shows that Scottish airports should be available from 0700 and more airspace over England may become available from 1300 although not as far south as the main London airports. We will continue to monitor Met Office information and the situation is likely to change overnight. We will make a further statement at approximately 0300 (local time), tomorrow, Tuesday 20 April and again at 0900 (local time). NATS is maintaining close dialogue with the Met Office and with the UK's safety regulator, the CAA, in respect of the international civil aviation policy we follow in applying restrictions to use of airspace. We are working closely with Government, airports and airlines, and airframe and aero engine manufacturers to get a better understanding of the effects of the ash cloud and to seek solutions.
