J'AI VU MAMAN EMBRASSER LE PÈRE NOËL

original recorded by the 13 years old Jimmy Boyd in 1952

According to Wikipedia Boyd's record was condemned by the Roman Catholic Church in Boston when it was released on the grounds that it mixed kissing with Christmas, ignoring the fact that mistletoe, under which many couples kiss, is traditionally hung in many homes during the Christmas season. Boyd was photographed meeting with the Archdiocese to explain the song. After the meeting, the ban was lifted. :sofunny:

QUAND ON ARRIVE EN VILLE (out of the musical "Starmania")

"Starmania" is a French/Québécois rock opera written in 1976 with music by Michel Berger and lyrics by Luc Plamondon. Some of its songs have passed into mainstream Francophone pop culture. The story is openly referring to the kidnapping of Patricia Hearst. In 1978, its first recording was released with the leading roles filled by Daniel Balavoine and Nanette Workman among others.

LES MOULINS DE MON COEUR

song of 1968, lyrics: Eddy Marnay, music: Michel Legrand. The opening two melodic sentences were - by the way - "borrowed" from the Andante of Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola and Orchestra, K 364:

The english version - "The Windmills of Your Mind" - received an Oscar 1969 (Original Song "The Thomas Crown Affair")

HABANERA / L'AMOUR EST ENFANT DE BOHÊME - CARMEN

"Carmen" is one of the most beloved and known operas in the world. Composed by Georges Bizet, libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on a novella of the same title by Prosper Mérimée. The opera was first performed 1875, and was not at first particularly successful. Bizet died a few months after the premiere.

The "Habanera" is one of the most famous arias in the whole opera-world and a "masterpiece" for every mezzo-soprano. It sounds simply but is - indeed - very difficult to sing, without entering triviality. Regarding that Celine's voice wasn't trained classical, she did a marvellous job!!!

Julia Migenes-Johnson (the first "Carmen" Celine saw, as she told the public 1985). Here's a clip of the gorgeous "Carmen"-movie by Francesco Rosi (1984):

Patti Smith covered during a performance at the Castle Clinton. Quentin Elias released a cover, Pop-Punk band, Go Radio covered the song as well as Misha B, Anggun, Vazquez Sounds, Connie Talbot, Mike Posner remixed his own cover of "Rolling in the Deep". FOR THOSE WHO CAN'T BELIEVE (as I did years ago, as I found that out)!!! YESSS! IT'S A COVER!!!

For the first time released on Marry Griffins "Purified CD album" in Japan 1996. It was re-released in November 2002 in the States.

* http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/.../a/Purified.htm

* http://www.marygriffin.com/discography/

And here you can read too, that her song was chosen by Celine:

http://www.marygriffin.com/about/

:sofunny: Yeah, you are right! (BUT - off topic - I've got a feeling that they will release another single for the new album as they seem to rework everything.)

And, yes, sorry! Was a typing error! Should read: 1997

And yes No. 3: I don't like Mary Griffin's version either. Noone can sing that song like CELINE!!!

FIANLLY! THE CONFUSION HAS ENDED!!!

I wrote Mary Griffin concerning "I surrender" and here's what she answered:

She recorded it before, but her album came out 8 months after Celine's. So as we define "recorded AND released" before Celine, "I surrender" must be defined as original.

GREATEST LOVE OF ALL

and NO!!!, Whitney's version wasn't the original!!!! The song, written by Michael Masser and Linda Creed, was originally recorded by George Benson for the 1977 Muhammad Ali biopic "The Greatest". But of course the song's been popularized by Whitney Houston.

According to Wikipedia, Linda Creed wrote the lyrics in the midst of her struggle with breast cancer. The words describe her feelings about coping with great challenges that one must face in life, being strong during those challenges whether you succeed or fail, and passing that strength on to children to carry with them into their adult lives. Creed eventually succumbed to the disease in April 1986 at the age of 36; at the time her song was an international hit by Whitney Houston.

Clive Davis, founder of Houston's label Arista Records, was initially against Houston recording the song for Whitney's debut studio album, but he eventually gave in after persuasion from Houston and Masser. It was released as the B-side to the single "You Give Good Love", a previous Top 5 hit by Houston. The song was eventually released as a single in its own right. The song, released in April 1986, was the seventh release from Houston's debut album, and spent three weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in May of that year.

In April 1987, Gordon Lightfoot filed a lawsuit against Michael Masser, alleging that Masser's song "The Greatest Love of All" stole twenty-four bars from Lightfoot's 1969 hit

. According to Maclean's, Lightfoot commented, "It really rubbed me the wrong way. I don't want the present-day generation to think that I stole my song from him."

"Love Is On The Way"

Love Is On The Way is originally recorded by Billy Porter (Who covered OOR from Céline) for the soundtrack to 1996 movie The First Wives Club (starring Bette Milder ,Goldie Hawn & Diane Keaton).

It was also finally released on his own album At the Corner of Broadway & Soul released in 2005.

His version is good IMO, though I like the textual changes in Céline's version more.

Also of course Céline's vocals are much prettier :giggle:

Too bad it was cut from the tour, it's one of my fav tracks from LTAL!

The Last To Know

From Sheena Easton's No Sound but a heart from 1987

Sheena Easton

Celine

Celine live

Sheena's version is OK, but I don't like her pinched voice that much. Plus I like that Céline's version is a bit faster.

Though I do wonder... who kept proposing these freaking already done song to Céline throughout the years?! :ranting:

Ahhh! Now I know, why you didn't find it! The song's been originally recorded 1987 by Sheena Easton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Sound_But_a_Heart) and it had been published as Post #36 in this thread (page 2).

Billy Porter re-recorded it for the soundtrack of "The First Wives Club" in 1996.

Celine recorded the song for the Unison-Album in 1991!!
