CENT MILLE CHANSONS

written by Michel Magne and Eddy Marnay, first released by Frida Boccara in 1968.

Frida Boccara:

Celine with Eddy Marnary (1987, "Station Du Soleil"):

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SONG!!!

"Cent mille chansons"

Cent mille maisons

Gravées à ton nom

Parmi les moissons de la terre

Cent mille chansons rien qu'à nous

Cent mille horizons devant nous

Partagés de bonheur

Tout étalé de nos coeurs

Et des pays reconnus

Et des forêts éperdues

Et des chagrins défendus

Et tes yeux et mes yeux

Dans un océan d'amour

"A hundred thousand songs"

There will be a hundred thousand songs

When the the time of a hundred thousand seasons will come

A hundred thousand lovers

Similar to both of us

In the blue bed of the earth

A hundred thousand songs all for us

A hundred thousand horizons in front of us

Sharing happiness

Spreading it out from our hearts

And the intense castles

And the starry boats

And the forgotten stars

And your eyes and my eyes

In an ocean of love

There will be a hundred thousand songs

When the the time of a hundred thousand seasons will come

A hundred thousand homes

Engrabed in your name

Among the harvests of the earth

A hundred thousand songs all for us

A hundred thousand horizons in front of us

Sharing happiness

Spreading it out from our hearts

And the recognized countries

And the overwhelming forests

And the defended grief

And your eyes and my eyes

In an ocean of love

Yes, it is amazing!

I KNEW I LOVED YOU

This song is a "border case", but as it is my favorite Celine-Song (with alot of deep personal meaning to me :in_love: ) I just want to put it in this thread too: The music's been released before, as "Deborah's theme" of the 1984 Italian epic crime film "Once Upon a Time in America" written and directed by Sergio Leone and starring Robert De Niro and James Woods, Deborah played by Elizabeth McGovern.

But for the lyrics of the song Quincy Jones (who names Ennio Morricone as his beloved composer), enlisted Alan and Marilyn Bergman for the lyrics and Celine as a singer for the 2007 tribute album "We All Love Ennio Morricone". So you can say it's an original in the sung version.

Deborah's theme (conducted by Ennio Morricone himself):

O HOLY NIGHT

("Cantique de Noël") is according to Wikipedia composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847 to the French poem "Minuit, chrétiens" (Midnight, Christians) by Placide Cappeau (1808-1877). Cappeau, a wine merchant and poet, had been asked by a parish priest to write a Christmas poem. Unitarian minister John Sullivan Dwight, editor of Dwight's Journal of Music, created a singing edition based on Cappeau's French text in 1855. In both the French original and in the two familiar English versions of the carol, the text reflects on the birth of Jesus and of mankind's redemption.

1906 Reginald Fessenden, a Canadian inventor, broadcast the first AM radio program, which started with a phonograph record of Handel's aria "Ombra mai fu" followed by Fessenden playing "O Holy Night" on the violin and singing the final verse. The carol therefore was the second piece of music to be broadcast on radio. Tenor Enrico Caruso recorded a version in 1916 which is still in print today. Of course there have been countless covers.

According to Wikipedia the first public performance of the song was by Bing Crosby, on his NBC radio show "The Kraft Music Hall" on Christmas Day 1941 According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the version sung by Bing Crosby is the best-selling single of all time.

The French lyrics are by Francis Blanche. Famous singers of that version: Eddy Mitchell (1981).

"I DROVE ALL NIGHT"

Roy Orbison

Cyndi Lauper

Some more info on how IDAN came about! From an interview with the write Billy Steinberg

Then the third cover of the song, the Celine Dion. I heard that Celine was looking for a song and that she wanted to use it as a single and for a Chrysler commercial and I knew Celine because with Rick Nowels, I wrote a song called "Falling Into You" and that was the title track of a Celine Dion album. Rick and I had co-produced "Falling Into You." We won a Grammy for it. I knew Vito Luprano her A&R man in Montreal. I called Vito and I said, "I hear you're looking for a song," and he said, "We are." I said, "I think I've got just what you're looking for." So I Federal Expressed to him Roy Orbison's version of "I Drove All Night" and I figured, because Celine is a woman, that there might be a little more competition with the Cyndi version, plus I felt that Roy's version was truer to our original vision of the song and that Roy's huge voice would somehow appeal to Celine. Sure enough they loved it. Every song publisher in the country was competing to get that and we got it. It was really satisfying. So she recorded it with a Swedish record producer (Peer Astrom) and incorporated it into her Las Vegas show. It did very well also.

Funny to know Céline's team were looking for songs and there were a lot of songs competing to become part of the Chrystler deal!

And they didn't pick a cover for her staight away! A the song to cover was actually offered by the writer himself! :-D

I start with the two, not yet posted covers of her last studio album:

WATER AND A FLAME

written by Francis "Eg" White and Daniel Merriweather, recorded as a duet by Daniel Merriweather and Adele. First released in November 2009.

There had been a big controversy arousing of Celine's first presentation of the song at the "Katie Couric Show" (April 24, 2013), as Celine only mentioned Adele and not Merriwheather:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDNWLnrF4VA (at about 4:52)

Samantha Ronson - a friend of him - wrote on May 1 a note on her blogsite: "Dear Celine Dion, when you cover someone else's song- you might want to give them credit."

http://www.samanthar...l-merriweather/

On his Facebook-page Merriwheater wrote on June 30 an open letter to Celine: "WOW...Thank you Samantha Ronson for drawing attention to this. It is astounding that Celine Dion tries to pass off lyrics that I wrote as her own... Now, if i had written the song for her, it wouldn't bother me so much, but 'Water and a Flame' is a very personal song that i wrote right after a break up i was going through and is one of my personal favorite songs on my album 'Love & War'... This song has every ounce of my heart ache and pain in it and she pretends as if she wrote it her self... it actually is quite strange... like what more do you want? You have sold 200 million albums worldwide but you cant give credit to the artist (me) that wrote the song you have named your album after... she mentions my friend and one time collaborator Adele, but Adele didn't write one word or melody of Water and a Flame and she'll be the first to tell you that... i asked her if she would sing the song with me to turn it into a duet, i had originally written it for one person but then adapted it to suit a female perspective in the second verse... My friend Eg White wrote the chords and arranged and produced the song, but i wrote the melody and the lyrics, every word!... all anyone has to do is call up APRA/AMCOS and ask them what the percentage splits are and they will tell you it is 50/50 between myself and Eg White... why would an artist of Celine Dion's calibre and prowess need to steel credit like this?... as i said, it is absolutely astounding!"

https://www.facebook...152968594950613

On July 2 a response had been posted by Celine's management on her Offical Website:

"[…] Despite the headlines that have emerged from Daniel's publicity, Celine certainly doesn't claim in any way whatsoever that she wrote the song. While we can understand Daniel's disappointment by not having his name mentioned during Katie Couric’s interview, it's rather unfair to Celine to be on the receiving end of the many disparaging comments that have now become public. Throughout Celine’s 32 year career she has always been very vocal about sharing the credit for her successes. She has been very vocal about the fact that she does not write her own songs...and that she is fortunate to have wonderful and talented writers to provide these gifts to her. For her to be accused of "stealing" a song is not only grossly inaccurate, but also very hurtful. During the thousands of interviews that she's given over the years, it's often that she will not mention the names of the writers involved. It's something that may not come up a lot in the interviews. That said, when a Celine Dion album is released, we always include complete and accurate writer credits in an updated bio, and of course, inside the CD packaging. Celine's new English album will be released worldwide this Fall. We are very excited about this new album, and we hope to have great success with it....and great success for all those who have contributed.

She loves Daniel Merriweather and Eg White’s song so much, and would never want to do any harm to them....nor take away anything from them....in fact, the opposite would be true. We hope this clears up any misconceptions regarding Celine's intentions."

As a result of that turmoil on July 25, 2013 had been published, that the planned album title ("Water and a flame") had been changed to "Loved my back to life".

I have a question. This fever clip looks like a professional recording intended for the DVD. On the video, it says it was filmed in 2006. So was the show recorded in 2006 for DVD release, but then droppend and re-recorded in 2007?

Yes.

I'm not convinced that was the reason they changed the name. Maybe it was part of it, but they never said that officially, and a couple of other things happened:

1) They changed the concept of the album. It was originally supposed to be 6 new songs and 6 cover songs from her show. Water and a Flame was supposed to be part of that concept -"water" for the new songs, and "flame" for the covers (or maybe the other way around). Then, after the surprise massive sales success of Sans Attendre, Sony decided to invest a bit more in the album with more new songs. And that "double/opposites" concept didn't make sense anymore.

2) They got LMBTL pretty late in the game from Sia. And if you watch the recording, it's easy to see that Celine was madly in love with that song. And the title fit the theme of where she was in her career. So it made more sense as a title than Water and a Flame.

Also it's easier promo wise to promote a single that's the album title too.

IF I CAN DREAM

written by Walter Earl Brown with quotations of Martin Luther King. Recorded In June 1968 by Elvis Presley, two months after Martin Luther King's death. When Brown first presented the song to Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis' manager, he nearly declined it, because: "This ain't Elvis' kind of song." But Elvis wanted to record the song.

Celine first performed that song on April 25, 2007 @ the charity show of American Idol "Idol Gives Back" in Kodak Theatre with a rotoscoped Elvis Presley (Watch this clip, if you are interested how this effect had been created:

)

2015 "If I can dream" is part of the setlist of the revamped version of "Celine" @ Las Vegas.

KISS / PURPLE RAIN

KISS:

written by Prince and The Revolution. Prince first handed a short acoustic demo to the funk band Mazarati for their debut album. Mazarati and producer David Z drastically reworked the song. Prince was so amazed about their work that he decided to record it for himself and released it 1986 as a single. Two covers of that song increased the popularity: Art of Noise feat. Tom Jones version in 1988 and Julia Roberts bath tub-interpretation in the movie that made her a star: "Pretty woman", 1990.

PURPLE RAIN:

written by Prince and The Revolution and title track of his 1984 album plus film. The song was recorded during a benefit concert for the "Minnesota Dance Theatre" in Minneapolis on August 3, 1983. Prince worried that the song sounded too similar to "Faithfully" by Jonathan Cain which had been in the charts at that time. But Cain reassured Prince that everything would be ok, and that the song only shared the same four chords.
