English translations of Celine's French songs

Mon reve de toujours literally means My Dream of Always.

I understand it to mean that this is a lifelong dream, or an ongoing dream and I translated it as 'My never-ending dream'.

I saw it translated somewhere as 'My Everlasting Dream' which I actually prefer now I come to think about it...

I'm not sure I know those songs but I will certainly try to find them and the lyrics and translate them for you... :)

iPod Most Played List

The Power Of Love (several versions) - Céline Dion

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Roberta Flack

Si dieu existe - Céline Dion & Claude DuBois

Frankenstein - Antony & the Johnsons

In Some Small Way - Céline Dion

Bird Gerhl - Antony & the Johnsons

Le blues du businessman - Céline Dion

Ne rien savoir de Lol était la connaître déjà.

Oh, thank you so much. I love that translation. That song is so beautiful. Those are songs from when she was younger. The first one was off of her La Voix Du Bon Dieu album and the second one is off of her first christmas album (?) Chante Noel, I"m pretty sure. :) I'll be looking forward to the translations. :flowers:

I am so glad somebody has asked for another translation. I have some free time at the moment and am very happy to oblige!

Mon reve de toujours

Across a cloud-covered beach

I was running, I was running

And all around me I could hear the cry

Of the wind, the sea and the storms

Against the waves, against my tears

I was running, I was running

And I knew that I would meet something magical

And there you were

It’s my never-ending dream

At the end of the most awful days

You are there, you are there

And I see the world light up

It’s the dream I have,

Today more than ever

You are there, you are there

And my life will change with you

In a strange and empty town

I am alone, I am alone

Shadows scare me

I will lose myself to drown myself

But you come and you save me

It’s my never-ending dream

At the end of the most awful days

You are there, you are there

And I see the world light up

It’s the dream I have,

Today more than ever

You are there, you are there

And my life will change with you

Thank You! What does the title translate into if I may ask? This is such a beautiful song. Thank you for translating it for me. :flowers:

Do you also have time to do the translation for Tire L'aiguille? and Quatre Pas D'ici? Thank you also. :)

A Quatre Pas D'ici is the french version of the song The Land Of Make Believe by Bucks Fizz.

I know this is really for songs, but i've just watched a french interview from 1992 and wondered if anyone can translate it?? I know its where Celine's talking about being in love with someone but she can't talk about him etc, but i'd love to understand it properly. :hmm:

This is the part of the interview

Okay i don't wanna go through all the pages to see if someone has already done this one,

but i'm listening to celine dion and ill divo, i believe in you, and the french is just so beautiful.

I'm not too good, but here's a rough translation.

Please feel free to erase this post if its been done already, or any fluent speakers make any changes! :)

.i belive in you.

All alone

You will go

Your heart open,

to the universe.

Follow your quest

without looking back,

dont wait

for the day to break (not sure about that line)

Follow your star

go whereever your dream takes you

one day you will touch it

if you believe, if you believe, if you believe

in yourself

Follow the light

Don't put out the flame that you

carry deep inside you, remember

that i believe, that i believe, that i believe

in you.

the french is: Tout seul

Tu t'en iras tout seul

coeur ourvert

A l'univers

Poursuis ta quete

sans regarder derriere

n'attends pas

que le jour

se leve

Suis ton etoile

Va jusqu'ou ton reve t'emporte

un jour tu le toucheras

si tu crois, si tu crois, si tu crois

en toi.

Suis ta lumiere

n'eteins pas la flamme que tu portes

au fond de toi souveins-toi

que je crois, que je crois, que je crois

en toi.

hi well

i'm not french but i can speak it

i woul say your translation is pretty good except one litlle thing:

Suis ta lumiere

n'eteins pas la flamme que tu portes

au fond de toi souveins-toi

que je crois, que je crois, que je crois

en toi.

should be:

Follow your light

Don't put out the flame that you carry(does this make sense?)

deep inside of you, remember

that i believe, that i believe, that i believe

in you.

i mean the difference is very subtle

the message is you bring a flame in your heart(i don't know if you can say it)

and

please look inside yourself and find this: I believe in you

MY LOVE...

See I would share my whole life with you

Would you do the same for me?

I would give all I am to you

Would you do the same for me?

Oh, that's one of my absolute favorites! Here's my attempt at a translation:

All the blues are written for you

"I woke up this morning baby,

The blues was pouring out of me”

I said these words a hundred times

These words that others have written

With all my voice, will all my soul

“with all the soul that I can”

The blues as I was taught

“I woke up this morning baby”

But that morning, I understood

The sorrow in the cotton fields

I was imagining my cocoon

The blows, the blood, the muddy weather

I was suffering while closing my eyes

“His baby’s far away”

I have forgiveness, I have prayers

But the blues aren’t phrases in the air

“I woke up this morning, baby”

But this morning you’re really cold

You understand deep in your core

All the blues are written for you

“Oh, oh I feel the blues in me

Nobody knows how I really feel

Nobody knows, nobody cares”

The words burn you one by one, as if

As if they finally belong to you

These blues were yours

With all my voice, all my soul

“with all the soul that I can”

The blues I was never taught

“I woke up this morning,

the blues was pouring out of me

Nobody knows, nobody sees”

To me, it seems that the song has to do with coming to a personal realization or understanding of the suffering of others through your own grief and troubles, but that's just what I get out of it...

Je ne vous oublie pas

During my absences sometimes without a doubt

I could have strayed away

Like if I had lost my path

Like if I had changed

So I have some tender words

Just to say it

I'm not forgetting you

No, never

You are deep inside me

In my life, in everything I do

My first loves, my first dreams

Have come with you

This is our story

I'm not forgetting you

No, never

You know so much about me

Of my life, of everything I do

So my happiness, my misfortunes

Are shared with you

This is our story

I'm not forgetting you

Because time can put into a cage

Our dreans and our desires

I make my choices and my travels

Sometimes I pay the price for it

Life smiles at me or hurts me

But whatever my life is

I'm not forgetting you

No, never

You are deep inside me

In my life, in everything I do

My first loves, my first dreams

Have come with you

This is our story

I'm not forgetting you

Even at the other end of the Earth

I continue my story with you

I'm not forgetting you

No, never

You are deep inside me

In my life, in everything I do

My first loves, my first dreams

Have come with you

This is our story

I'm not forgetting you

No, never

You know so much about me

Of my life, of everything I do

So my happiness, my misfortunes

Are shared with you

This is our story

I'm not forgetting you

I'm not forgetting you

Thanks for this thread, guys. I've always wanted to know what some of her French songs mean and say. Now I wish she would record some of them in English, haha.

It's really interesting to see how celine's songs give you the desire to understand the french language!

I have a question if you have time to answer me : what are the differences between her english songs and her french ones in your idea?

I don't know really well the english ones, but I think that in english the "performance" is very important but in french it is more about emotion, less technic, more nuances.

Is there many people in here who like her french songs without understand what they mean?

Sorry if I'm too long in this post, I'm curious about you people.

PS : I'm very sorry about my poor english...I hope you understand what I mean...

I'm just a JJG "fan", I'm here by accident! :-D

I don't speak French but I'm learning (at least trying to find the time to!!) Without understanding them I liked the songs, but once I learned the words it was a whole new thing.. I find her French songs to be even more emotional than the English ones, and in a more poetic way. :)

I would love to understand and speak french fluently some day but as for right now I know a couple words in french just from listening to her songs and the translations from this thread helped me a lot. :flowers:

As for her french songs.. I know a lot of their meanings but not individual words and phrases. There is so much emotion behind the lyrics and I've heard that it is more about the lyric and not the performance. To me Céline always sings with passion but when she sings in french there's a different feeling. She really feels the song and captures the emotion that the words express.

I actually like "If that's what it takes" better than Por que tu m'aimes encore...

There! I said it!! :crybaby:

I speak English and Spanish, and I hope to learn French too!

I think I know enough French to the point where I can understand the name of the song, but not the lyrics! She speaks/sings to fast! :giggle:

Haha, I see what you mean, but the lyrics to PQTME are simply amazing. The last verse always gets to me: Plus brillante plus belle pour une autre étincelle

Je me changerai en or pour que tu m'aimes encore. I'll make myself brighter, more beautiful, to rekindle the spark. I'll turn myself to gold, so that you love me still.......

^^This was the first French-language Celine song I learned; I wanted to understand what the song means. Boy, was it a smart choice! That said, I speak English and am semi-fluent in Italian, so French isn't exactly my speciality. But her songs are beyond linguistics! :thumbsup2:

I would love to speak French! It sounds beautiful even when theyre arguing haha. I don't know how I'm going to learn though. I have a hard enough time trying to learn Spanish since I'm Hispanic (No i don;t know how to speak Spanish only English :shy: )

I agree with your answer on the first question.

I absoloutely adore her french music without understanding what the words mean :in_love:
