tonybower Posted June 23, 2008 at 10:58 PM Posted June 23, 2008 at 10:58 PM Sorry to bombard you all with translations that nobody has requested but I have one more offering tonight. It is Lettre de George Sand à Alfred de Musset. I have been listening to this song a lot recently and knew what it was about but as I sat down tonight to translate and actually think about what it meant, I was actually very moved. My reaction was almost physical because I got butterflies translating certain lines. All the more reason to share it with you then... Letter From George Sand to Alfred de Musset Venice, 12th May 1834 No, dear child, these three letters are not the final handshake from your parting lover; they are the embrace of a brother who remains. This feeling is too great, too pure, too gentle for me ever to be finished with it. May my memory never poison any of the joys of your life, but do not allow these joys to destroy or tarnish my memory. Be happy, be loved. How could you not be? But keep me in a small, secret corner of your heart and go there whenever you feel sad and there you will find comfort, or encouragement. Love, dear Alfred, love for all that is good.Love a young, beautiful woman who has not yet been loved,Take care of her and do not make her suffer.A woman’s heart is such a delicate thing When it is not ice or stone !I do not believe there to be a middle ground And nor is there one In the way you love.Your soul is made to love passionatelyOr to shrivel up completely. You have said it a hundred times and you have tried to deny itBut nothing, nothing could erase those words,Love is the only thing in this worldThat means anything. Perhaps you suffered for loving meFor loving another with abandon.Maybe the one who comes after me will love you less than I did,And maybe she will be happierAnd more loved. Perhaps your last love will be the most romantic and the most youthful. But your heart, your good heart, do not let it die, I beg you.May you love with all your heartEvery love of your life,So that one day you can look back And say, as I can, that yes, I often suffered,And sometimes I made mistakesBut I loved. 1 Quote iPod Most Played List The Power Of Love (several versions) - Céline DionThe First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Roberta FlackSi dieu existe - Céline Dion & Claude DuBoisFrankenstein - Antony & the JohnsonsIn Some Small Way - Céline DionBird Gerhl - Antony & the JohnsonsLe blues du businessman - Céline Dion Ne rien savoir de Lol était la connaître déjà.

Jacqui Posted June 28, 2008 at 06:17 AM Posted June 28, 2008 at 06:17 AM (edited) I did a few more in the past few days because a) I find it a good way to learn more French and b ) I'm sick with a flu, and have no energy to do much else Again I didn't attempt to be too poetic, I'm just trying to make sense. I'll leave the analyzing for the experts So here's Comment T'aimer....I'm not sure about the second line though, a literal translation of "le roman de la rose" would be "the novel of the pink", but I don't know if it's talking about a pink book, a book of Roses, or a book written by somebody called Rose LOL, so if anyone has any thoughts??? Do not tell meThe novel of the roseThe taste and the colour of the thingsI already knowDo not tell meRomeo and JulietThe story of Beauty and the BeastI would not understand Tell me rather how to love youWhat it is necessary to do to keep youI hear your voice speak of everythingI do not hear you speak of usFurther than three words to each other sayStronger than a moment of pleasureAnd longer than only one SummerI want to know how to love you Sand in the handsThe cold of a fire of yesterdayA little snow at the end of WinterThis is what I hold Then tell me how to love youWhat it is necessary to do to keep youTears if I lived without youLaughs the day I see youFurther than the last sunStronger still than the rainbowAnd longer than only one SummerI want to know how to love youI want to know how to love youI want to know how to love youHow to love you Edited June 28, 2008 at 06:18 AM by Jacqui Quote
tonybower Posted June 28, 2008 at 10:51 PM Posted June 28, 2008 at 10:51 PM (edited) Hi Jacqui, I think you did right to translate rose as rose. I think the idea of a story about a rose is more convincing than a pink book! Anyway, thanks for your work. I will now have to listen to the song! I, too, have translated another song... Sur le même bateau, one of my very favourites! O'm sure most people already know what they song is about, especially since Titanic, but I thought I'd translate anyway. This is another example of a song that sounds much better (and has more power) in French. There were a few very tricky lines due to an almost complete lack of verbs but the sense is still there I think. Anyway, here it is... I opted for In the same boat, rather than On the same boat, as this recalls the typical expression in English: Sur le même bateau On the boarding platformsFirst class or economy, up front or behindThe luggage from the quays is brought on boardThe hold is filled with steel and curse words Just waiting for one last signal, for the captain to give the word In the cabins and in the kitchensAll in the same boat A splash of champagne to toast the departureIn the holds, workers and shift changes From social functions and the waltz and the tango To the shadows and the sorrow and the cheap and nasty drink Waiting for the ports of call, Athens or Macau All beneath the same stars All in the same boat In the glare of the machines, sailors suffer Around the swimming pool sit the bold and the beautiful From the engine room, to the jeweled salons Sweat and hardship down below, the finest luxury above And then comes the storm and the waters rock They all begin to worryAll in the same boat The vast ocean and the stars collideAnd suddenly everything is fragile faced with the elements No rank no class, no workers no dandies Everyone shares the same distressIn the same boat, the same boat Edited June 28, 2008 at 10:58 PM by tonybower 1 Quote iPod Most Played List The Power Of Love (several versions) - Céline DionThe First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Roberta FlackSi dieu existe - Céline Dion & Claude DuBoisFrankenstein - Antony & the JohnsonsIn Some Small Way - Céline DionBird Gerhl - Antony & the JohnsonsLe blues du businessman - Céline Dion Ne rien savoir de Lol était la connaître déjà.
Jacqui Posted July 26, 2008 at 09:45 AM Posted July 26, 2008 at 09:45 AM I'm not sure if anyone is even interested lol, but I'm still translating songs for my French learning and this one was soooo beautiful, so I'm gonna post it: Cherche Encore. There are so many walls who keep youToo many inaccessible laddersIn your dreams and in your words. You have chosen the reverse over painElsewhere, where other rainbowsTrace the worlds more beautiful... Search stillSo that your flame will burnThe paradise who sleepsIn the secrets of your soulSearch stillYour light and your lawsIf you can, search still strongerAnd if ever you lose yourselfI will be there, I will be there... I want to remain in your storyA small door openedIn the corridor where you fleeBehind the bars of your memoryEven where the reason desertedI will hear you without a cry... Go furtherSearch stillSo that your flame will burnThe paradise who sleepsIn the secrets of your soulSearch stillYour light and your faithIf you can, search still strongerAnd if ever you lose yourselfI will be there, I will be there... And the time, the people, continue to advanceIf you fall before, I will carry youAnd the winds, the years, continue to turnIf forgetfulness waits for you, I too will wait... 1 Quote

angeluk2 Posted July 26, 2008 at 10:54 AM Author Posted July 26, 2008 at 10:54 AM Any chance someone who knows what they are doing could translate l'Immensité.I have been trying to do it but am getting confused with some of the lines and some of the meanings. Thanks in advance if someone could do this Hi, well this is a difficult song to translate. Because of the list-like nature of the verses, it actually sounds quite clumsy and as I am not a songwriter I found it quite difficult to render the English translation as musical as the original French version. Usually when I translate the songs though I do not try to rewrite an English song, but just try to capture the ideas behind the Fremch lyrics. As such the translation rarely sounds as beautiful as the French but I would hate to change the words too much for the sake of making it more musical. A huge problem with this song is the French use of the word immensité. This is almost an abstract noun which are used quite freely in French and can express a certain image or idea. But they cannot be used quite so easily in English. As you can see, I start of by translaitg it as 'the immensity of it all' but finish by simply saying 'Immensity'. I think the image of stars against skin leads into the image of 'l'immensité' and gives a good idea of what the writer wants to say: perhaps that the kiss and the passion are like an endless, starry night sky. The beauty and the vastness and the mystery of it... Still, not so easy to render in English unless you want to write a whole sentence to express what the French expresses with one word! Other problems arise: 'reine de Sabbah' for example. I put Egyptian queen but just because the image works in English. I think Sabbah might be a town in Lebanon so maybe we could change this to Lebanese queen...? 'Sursaut' is difficult because it means jolt or surprise or maybe even startle. I use throes here to fit with desire (as in the throes of passion, or pangs of emotion. The idea of jolt or surprise coming from the fact that throes are often awkward and sudden...) Well, here is my translation... There were other problems and maybe I was quite lazy with the images... I probably should spend more time on it but once I reach this stage I usually get impatient and am eager to share it with others. If there is anybody who disagrees with the translation or who has more appropriate suggestions, please feel free to comment and make your amendments... I hope you like it... Immensity I have seen the Ural Mountains and the Sahara desertThe dark nights of an Egyptian QueenI have seen the Earth, and its stormsThe oceans and their shipwrecksI have witnessed crowds and the silenceThe fire of joy and of sufferingI have seen roses beneath snowAnd great white wolves caught in trapsI have watched the summer rain fallAnd lovers linger on the platform But, you know, what amazes me the mostIs the passion of our kissThe desire and the throesLike stars against your skinThe immensity of it all I have seen angels and demonsLowered eyes and sermonsI have seen the darkness and the lightOf a solitary female warriorI have seen the seas and the rocksRevelations and secretsI have seen the vast AmericasAnd all the mirages in AfricaI have seen blue skies and glaciersCome together and then tear apart But you know, what amazes me the mostIs the passion of our kissThe desire and the throesLike stars against your skinThe immensity of it all I have seen childhood and drunkennessLife which smiles at us, sadnessThe poverty of a foolish worldI have watched men fallAnd rise again before my very eyes I have seen the cold and the tranceThe laughter of our dancing sonI recognise his golden eyesOh, how he looks like youI have seen lilies and orchidsHidden in our secret garden But, you know, what blows me awayIs the passion of your kissThe desire and the throesLike stars against my skinImmensityLike the gentle touch of your kissThe desire and the throesImmensity Thankyou sooooo much Tony, sorry i didnt see this post for a while!I love this song so much, even when i didnt know the meaning of some of the lyrics,i could feel it.And the translation helped me understand it a whole lot more and confirmed what i thought it was saying to me Quote CHOCOLATE is the answer....I don't give a damn what the question was!

angeluk2 Posted July 26, 2008 at 12:27 PM Author Posted July 26, 2008 at 12:27 PM Im going to put S'il N'en Restait Qu'une here but please keep in mind what Tony said earlier, that sometimes the translation doesnt make exact sense so just try to feel the meaning and the imagery rather than the literal words of translation(does that make sense? )This is one of those songs that doesnt translate too well, and one paragraph really got me!where it says for always bound together it litteraly translated as since always trap,so i played with it a bit to make some sence. Here goes.... S'il N'en Restait Qu'une(Je serais celle-là) And if there was only one leftTo play her happinessAnd bet her fortuneOn the red of the heart To accept the tearsAccept night and dayTo deliver herself bare handed(surrender)To the claws of love And if there was only one leftTo not be boredAnd to cry for nothingOn an old couch Yes, if there was only one leftFor movie-like loveYes, if there was only one leftI'd be that one And, if there was only one leftTo bravely goDream under the moonlightAt the arm of her lover And to have the audacity(nerve)To confide during summerTo the star passing byWishes of eternity If there was only one leftTo foolishly traceOn the dunes' sandTwo interlocked hearts Yes, if there was only one leftFor grand-size loveYes, if there was only one leftI'd be that one And if there was only one leftTo dare stateThat no misfortune is worseThan not to love To follow you around the worldWithout questions, without contractI'd be that one And if there was only one left to envy the merry-go-round(or carousel) where each one(or boy and girl)for always bound together To envy their wildnessTheir excess, their fearsI'd be that oneI'd be that one And if there was only one leftTo shamelessly look forA caring shoulderWhere to hide her happiness And if there is only one leftFor love to the endYes, if there was only one leftI'd be that one Quote CHOCOLATE is the answer....I don't give a damn what the question was!

grobandion Posted July 30, 2008 at 05:24 PM Posted July 30, 2008 at 05:24 PM (edited) Hi, since my friend Nati (AKA celineargento) is God knows where, and hasn't posted yet the song "Nadie lo entiende" by Cafe Quijano feat. Celine, I'll do it here (i hope she won't mind) Far from the odes without meaningwith the wit of a crook, punished without pain Far from children coming closerfrom children kissing him, taking care of him, waiting for him... Close of a life that's getting drythat's shatters his head, and owes him honesty Close, of the clock of tragediesof the unfair of his prison cellthat sofocates him and locks him up Chorus:Let it come and tell me, the one who canwhy suddenly some people get to open the door that hides the father figureWhy does it open? Why does time stops and loosesOne life that feels and noone understandsWhy does a man suffers if noone loves himWhy life is pleased to hurt? Maybe the fairys of science, luckily in time will give him his conscience backthe one he lost some month, in march.Maybe hugs will be helpfull, words would help him, and portraits with faces of his saints, will please him Repeat chorus I hope you find it helpfull to understand the meaning. It's obviously about a man in jail, and the singer prays he finds comfort in his family, the love they feel for him. Repite coro Edited July 30, 2008 at 05:27 PM by grobandion Quote

littlechap Posted July 30, 2008 at 08:02 PM Posted July 30, 2008 at 08:02 PM (edited) I have to say that I like the idea of collecting translations of Celine's french songs. For me it is sometimes hard to understand all the lyrics so this topic really helps to get to know the meaning(s).I add the translation of a song that I personally love very much Le blues du businessman (The blues of the businessman) I'm doing well in my business I'm doing well in my love affairs I change secretary often I have my office on top of a tower From where I see the town upside down From where I control my universe I spend half my life in the air Between New York and Singapore I always travel in first (class) I have my second home In all the Hilton's on Earth I can't accept misery I'm not happy, but I look like I am I lost humour sense Since I got the business sense I succeeded and I'm proud of it In fact I have only one regret It's not what I wanted to do I wanted to be an artist To be able to do my show When the airplane touches the ground In Rotterdam or Rio I wanted to be a singer To be able to shout who I am I wanted to be an author To be able to create my life I wanted to be an actor So every day I would change my skin And to find myself beautifull On a big color screen I wanted to be an artist To be able to be an anarchist And live like a,,, millionaire I wanted to be an artiste To have the world to do again To be able to tell why I exist Edited July 30, 2008 at 08:04 PM by littlechap Quote **Sometimes I am frightened but I'm ready to love for the power of love** http://anni.souleye.de/IMG_1.jpg Frankfurt 14-06-2008Geneva 09-07-2008 http://anni.souleye.de/Blinkie5.gif

grobandion Posted July 30, 2008 at 08:44 PM Posted July 30, 2008 at 08:44 PM Hi noar...I don't think many of us speak japanese (I wish I did) so that'll be more difficult.I'm not sure if there's a japanese section in here....have you tried asking someone there? they're probably the nicest people and if someone speaks English, you're donebye Quote
SensationalCeline Posted July 30, 2008 at 08:45 PM Posted July 30, 2008 at 08:45 PM ok i know on the last page someone kindly linked to some youtube videos which had translations on.I just wanted to write some down so i dont have to watch the video when i listen to my music Je ne vous oublie pas During my absences sometimes without a doubtI could have strayed awayLike if I had lost my pathLike if I had changedSo I have some tender wordsJust to say it I'm not forgetting youNo, neverYou are deep inside meIn my life, in everything I doMy first loves, my first dreamsHave come with youThis is our storyI'm not forgetting youNo, neverYou know so much about meOf my life, of everything I doSo my happiness, my misfortunesAre shared with youThis is our storyI'm not forgetting you Because time can put into a cageOur dreans and our desiresI make my choices and my travelsSometimes I pay the price for itLife smiles at me or hurts meBut whatever my life is I'm not forgetting youNo, neverYou are deep inside meIn my life, in everything I doMy first loves, my first dreamsHave come with youThis is our storyI'm not forgetting you Even at the other end of the EarthI continue my story with you I'm not forgetting youNo, neverYou are deep inside meIn my life, in everything I doMy first loves, my first dreamsHave come with youThis is our storyI'm not forgetting youNo, neverYou know so much about meOf my life, of everything I doSo my happiness, my misfortunesAre shared with youThis is our storyI'm not forgetting youI'm not forgetting you This is one of my favorite songs. grobandion Posted August 1, 2008 at 04:56 PM Posted August 1, 2008 at 04:56 PM Here's the translation of "Sola otra vez" "I intended to fly, and I met lonelinessI played love without giving, without waiting.I go out to look for a hint, a signalto make my dream come true..to love again Alone again, I don't know how to liveAlone again, without love I want to know who does a woman feel...my heart can't take anymore loneliness Alone again....(repeat chorus)" As you see, the lyrics are a bit different than in English...but the meaning is pretty much the same:I DON'T WANT TO BE ALONE ANYMORE!!!! hahaha saludos Quote
