Je cherche l'ombre

I seek out the darkness

To dance with you, my love,

To old fashioned songs

Which come to mind

When the sun fades

And the night returns

I seek out the darkness

Where we can shelter together, my love,

So I can rediscover your body

Far from the light

So I can love you again

Like a stranger

I seek out the darkness,

My love, to extinguish the fire

That consumes my soul

And burns in my veins;

The fire of this detestable desire

Which rages inside me

I seek out the darkness

To lament with you, my love

This life, which is much too short,

That slips through our fingers

And eats away the days

As it separates me from you

I search for the shadows

Like one searches for a friend, my love

A friend who takes your hand

Without tears or shame

And takes us to a place

Where we can hide our happiness

Hide our happiness

I seek out the darkness...

Sorry to bombard you all with translations that nobody has requested but I have one more offering tonight.

It is Lettre de George Sand à Alfred de Musset. I have been listening to this song a lot recently and knew what it was about but as I sat down tonight to translate and actually think about what it meant, I was actually very moved. My reaction was almost physical because I got butterflies translating certain lines. All the more reason to share it with you then... :)

Letter From George Sand to Alfred de Musset

Venice, 12th May 1834

No, dear child, these three letters are not the final handshake from your parting lover; they are the embrace of a brother who remains. This feeling is too great, too pure, too gentle for me ever to be finished with it. May my memory never poison any of the joys of your life, but do not allow these joys to destroy or tarnish my memory. Be happy, be loved. How could you not be? But keep me in a small, secret corner of your heart and go there whenever you feel sad and there you will find comfort, or encouragement.

Love, dear Alfred, love for all that is good.

Love a young, beautiful woman who has not yet been loved,

Take care of her and do not make her suffer.

A woman’s heart is such a delicate thing

When it is not ice or stone !

I do not believe there to be a middle ground

And nor is there one

In the way you love.

Your soul is made to love passionately

Or to shrivel up completely.

You have said it a hundred times and you have tried to deny it

But nothing, nothing could erase those words,

Love is the only thing in this world

That means anything.

Perhaps you suffered for loving me

For loving another with abandon.

Maybe the one who comes after me will love you less than I did,

And maybe she will be happier

And more loved.

Perhaps your last love will be the most romantic and the most youthful.

But your heart, your good heart, do not let it die, I beg you.

May you love with all your heart

Every love of your life,

So that one day you can look back

And say, as I can, that yes, I often suffered,

And sometimes I made mistakes

But I loved.

I din't realize what I was listening to but this is a very moving song. Thank you so very much for posting it.

I did a few more in the past few days because a) I find it a good way to learn more French and b ) I'm sick with a flu, and have no energy to do much else :( Again I didn't attempt to be too poetic, I'm just trying to make sense. :) I'll leave the analyzing for the experts ;)

So here's Comment T'aimer....I'm not sure about the second line though, a literal translation of "le roman de la rose" would be "the novel of the pink", but I don't know if it's talking about a pink book, a book of Roses, or a book written by somebody called Rose LOL, so if anyone has any thoughts???

Do not tell me

The novel of the rose

The taste and the colour of the things

I already know

Do not tell me

Romeo and Juliet

The story of Beauty and the Beast

I would not understand

Tell me rather how to love you

What it is necessary to do to keep you

I hear your voice speak of everything

I do not hear you speak of us

Further than three words to each other say

Stronger than a moment of pleasure

And longer than only one Summer

I want to know how to love you

Sand in the hands

The cold of a fire of yesterday

A little snow at the end of Winter

This is what I hold

Then tell me how to love you

What it is necessary to do to keep you

Tears if I lived without you

Laughs the day I see you

Further than the last sun

Stronger still than the rainbow

And longer than only one Summer

I want to know how to love you

I want to know how to love you

I want to know how to love you

How to love you

Hi Jacqui, I think you did right to translate rose as rose. I think the idea of a story about a rose is more convincing than a pink book!

Anyway, thanks for your work. I will now have to listen to the song!

I, too, have translated another song... Sur le même bateau, one of my very favourites! O'm sure most people already know what they song is about, especially since Titanic, but I thought I'd translate anyway. This is another example of a song that sounds much better (and has more power) in French. There were a few very tricky lines due to an almost complete lack of verbs but the sense is still there I think.

Anyway, here it is... I opted for In the same boat, rather than On the same boat, as this recalls the typical expression in English:

Sur le même bateau

On the boarding platforms

First class or economy, up front or behind

The luggage from the quays is brought on board

The hold is filled with steel and curse words

Just waiting for one last signal, for the captain to give the word

In the cabins and in the kitchens

All in the same boat

A splash of champagne to toast the departure

In the holds, workers and shift changes

From social functions and the waltz and the tango

To the shadows and the sorrow and the cheap and nasty drink

Waiting for the ports of call, Athens or Macau

All beneath the same stars

All in the same boat

In the glare of the machines, sailors suffer

Around the swimming pool sit the bold and the beautiful

From the engine room, to the jeweled salons

Sweat and hardship down below, the finest luxury above

And then comes the storm and the waters rock

They all begin to worry

All in the same boat

The vast ocean and the stars collide

And suddenly everything is fragile faced with the elements

No rank no class, no workers no dandies

Everyone shares the same distress

In the same boat, the same boat

I'm not sure if anyone is even interested lol, but I'm still translating songs for my French learning and this one was soooo beautiful, so I'm gonna post it: Cherche Encore.

There are so many walls who keep you

Too many inaccessible ladders

In your dreams and in your words.

You have chosen the reverse over pain

Elsewhere, where other rainbows

Trace the worlds more beautiful...

Search still

So that your flame will burn

The paradise who sleeps

In the secrets of your soul

Search still

Your light and your laws

If you can, search still stronger

And if ever you lose yourself

I will be there, I will be there...

I want to remain in your story

A small door opened

In the corridor where you flee

Behind the bars of your memory

Even where the reason deserted

I will hear you without a cry...

Go further

Search still

So that your flame will burn

The paradise who sleeps

In the secrets of your soul

Search still

Your light and your faith

If you can, search still stronger

And if ever you lose yourself

I will be there, I will be there...

And the time, the people, continue to advance

If you fall before, I will carry you

And the winds, the years, continue to turn

If forgetfulness waits for you, I too will wait...

Any chance someone who knows what they are doing could translate l'Immensité.I have been trying to do it but am getting confused with some of the lines and some of the meanings. Thanks in advance if someone could do this :D

Hi, well this is a difficult song to translate. Because of the list-like nature of the verses, it actually sounds quite clumsy and as I am not a songwriter I found it quite difficult to render the English translation as musical as the original French version. Usually when I translate the songs though I do not try to rewrite an English song, but just try to capture the ideas behind the Fremch lyrics. As such the translation rarely sounds as beautiful as the French but I would hate to change the words too much for the sake of making it more musical.

A huge problem with this song is the French use of the word immensité. This is almost an abstract noun which are used quite freely in French and can express a certain image or idea. But they cannot be used quite so easily in English. As you can see, I start of by translaitg it as 'the immensity of it all' but finish by simply saying 'Immensity'. I think the image of stars against skin leads into the image of 'l'immensité' and gives a good idea of what the writer wants to say: perhaps that the kiss and the passion are like an endless, starry night sky. The beauty and the vastness and the mystery of it... Still, not so easy to render in English unless you want to write a whole sentence to express what the French expresses with one word!

Other problems arise: 'reine de Sabbah' for example. I put Egyptian queen but just because the image works in English. I think Sabbah might be a town in Lebanon so maybe we could change this to Lebanese queen...? 'Sursaut' is difficult because it means jolt or surprise or maybe even startle. I use throes here to fit with desire (as in the throes of passion, or pangs of emotion. The idea of jolt or surprise coming from the fact that throes are often awkward and sudden...)

Well, here is my translation... There were other problems and maybe I was quite lazy with the images... I probably should spend more time on it but once I reach this stage I usually get impatient and am eager to share it with others. If there is anybody who disagrees with the translation or who has more appropriate suggestions, please feel free to comment and make your amendments... I hope you like it...

Immensity

I have seen the Ural Mountains and the Sahara desert

The dark nights of an Egyptian Queen

I have seen the Earth, and its storms

The oceans and their shipwrecks

I have witnessed crowds and the silence

The fire of joy and of suffering

I have seen roses beneath snow

And great white wolves caught in traps

I have watched the summer rain fall

And lovers linger on the platform

But, you know, what amazes me the most

Is the passion of our kiss

The desire and the throes

Like stars against your skin

The immensity of it all

I have seen angels and demons

Lowered eyes and sermons

I have seen the darkness and the light

Of a solitary female warrior

I have seen the seas and the rocks

Revelations and secrets

I have seen the vast Americas

And all the mirages in Africa

I have seen blue skies and glaciers

Come together and then tear apart

But you know, what amazes me the most

Is the passion of our kiss

The desire and the throes

Like stars against your skin

The immensity of it all

I have seen childhood and drunkenness

Life which smiles at us, sadness

The poverty of a foolish world

I have watched men fall

And rise again before my very eyes

I have seen the cold and the trance

The laughter of our dancing son

I recognise his golden eyes

Oh, how he looks like you

I have seen lilies and orchids

Hidden in our secret garden

But, you know, what blows me away

Is the passion of your kiss

The desire and the throes

Like stars against my skin

Immensity

Like the gentle touch of your kiss

The desire and the throes

Immensity

Thankyou sooooo much Tony, sorry i didnt see this post for a while!

Je ne vous oublie pas

During my absences sometimes without a doubt

I could have strayed away

Like if I had lost my path

Like if I had changed

So I have some tender words

Just to say it

I'm not forgetting you

No, never

You are deep inside me

In my life, in everything I do

My first loves, my first dreams

Have come with you

This is our story

I'm not forgetting you

No, never

You know so much about me

Of my life, of everything I do

So my happiness, my misfortunes

Are shared with you

This is our story

I'm not forgetting you

Because time can put into a cage

Our dreans and our desires

I make my choices and my travels

Sometimes I pay the price for it

Life smiles at me or hurts me

But whatever my life is

I'm not forgetting you

No, never

You are deep inside me

In my life, in everything I do

My first loves, my first dreams

Have come with you

This is our story

I'm not forgetting you

Even at the other end of the Earth

I continue my story with you

I'm not forgetting you

No, never

You are deep inside me

In my life, in everything I do

My first loves, my first dreams

Have come with you

This is our story

I'm not forgetting you

No, never

You know so much about me

Of my life, of everything I do

So my happiness, my misfortunes

Im going to put S'il N'en Restait Qu'une here but please keep in mind what Tony said earlier, that sometimes the translation doesnt make exact sense so just try to feel the meaning and the imagery rather than the literal words of translation(does that make sense? )

This is one of those songs that doesnt translate too well, and one paragraph really got me!where it says for always bound together it litteraly translated as since always trap,so i played with it a bit to make some sence. Here goes....

S'il N'en Restait Qu'une(Je serais celle-là)

And if there was only one left

To play her happiness

And bet her fortune

On the red of the heart

To accept the tears

Accept night and day

To deliver herself bare handed(surrender)

To the claws of love

And if there was only one left

To not be bored

And to cry for nothing

On an old couch

Yes, if there was only one left

For movie-like love

Yes, if there was only one left

I'd be that one

And, if there was only one left

To bravely go

Dream under the moonlight

At the arm of her lover

And to have the audacity(nerve)

To confide during summer

To the star passing by

Wishes of eternity

If there was only one left

To foolishly trace

On the dunes' sand

Two interlocked hearts

Yes, if there was only one left

For grand-size love

Yes, if there was only one left

I'd be that one

And if there was only one left

To dare state

That no misfortune is worse

Than not to love

To follow you around the world

Without questions, without contract

I'd be that one

And if there was only one left

to envy the merry-go-round(or carousel)

where each one(or boy and girl)

for always bound together

To envy their wildness

Their excess, their fears

I'd be that one

I'd be that one

And if there was only one left

To shamelessly look for

A caring shoulder

Where to hide her happiness

And if there is only one left

For love to the end

Yes, if there was only one left

I'd be that one

I know Berceuse may not be everyone's fav on the D'elles album but i wanted to write the translation as it realy touches me that this is so obviously a song for Rene-Charles(always get a tear when i read these words)

Berceuse

hush hush

Don't wake up

I only wanted to kiss you

to See you once again

to take you with me

where I go and sing

mommy loves you x4

please don't look at me

please don't ask for my arms

oh please don't you cry

I want to stay here but I cannot

mommy loves you x9

I love you so

I know

That I'm making you sad

I take you with me on stage

and if the audience applauses

it's because you're with me

my man

mommy loves you

I love you

Y'a six milliards d'humains sur terre

Mais chacun vie sa vie en solitaire

The future is planetary

There are six billion humans on Earth

But everyone lives his live alone

Chacun a ses habitudes

Chacun a ses certitudes

Et l'amour est la pire des solitudes

Everyone has his habits

Everyone has his certitudes

And love is the worst of solitudes

Quand l'univers m'indiffère

Quand j'ai plus envie de rien faire

Quand la vie m'endort comme un somnifère

When I'm indefferent about the Universe

When I don't feel like doing anything

When life puts me to sleep like a soporific

J'ai inventé la formule

I d-d-d-dance in my head

I d-d-d-dance in my head

Que je sois debout dans le métro

Que je sois assise à mon bureau

Tous les jours les mêmes mots

Les mêmes gestes de robot

Even if I'm standing in the subway

Even if I'm sitting at my desk

Every day the same words

The same robot moves

Y'a d'quoi dev'nir fou

Et vous qu'en pensez-vous?

Y'a vraiment d'quoi dev'nir fou

Mais moi je m'en fou

There's something to become insane

What do you think about that?

There's really something to become insane

But I don't care

Je de-de-de-danse dans ma tête

I d-d-d-dance in my head

I d-d-d-dance in my head

I d-d-d-dance in my head

Quoi qu'on fasse ou quoi qu'on dise

De partout on nous satellise

On nous épie, on nous informatise

What ever we do or what ever we say

From everywhere they stallite us

They watch us, they compute us

A force de la regarder

Je commence à me demander

Si ma télé ne va pas m'avaler

By seeing it so much

I begin to wonder

If my head won't swallow me

Dehors les néons s'allument

All right!

J'préfère regarder la lune

All night ...

Etendue nue sur mon lit

Dans la chaleur de la nuit

Outside neon tubes turn on

All right!

I prefer to watch the moon

All night...

Laid naked on my bed

In the night's heat

Les sirènes de police

Hurlent comme des loups

Je voudrais comme Alice

Tomber dans un grand trou...

Police sirens

Howl like wolves

I would like as Alice

To fall in a big hole...

Je de-de-de-danse dans ma tête

Je de-de-de-danse dans ma tête

Je de-de-de-danse dans ma tête

I d-d-d-dance in my head

I d-d-d-dance in my head

I d-d-d-dance in my head

I used my brain for this, and a translator for a few words I didn't know...but I'm still very much learning French, so if I've made any mistakes, please feel free to correct me!!

"On S'est Aimé À Cause."

We loved each other because

Because of the Summer

Who painted all in pink

The love and the city

Because of the big dreams

That we had built

Around Adam and Eve

And of their paradise

Because of the ambiance

Of the place and the moment

And of the scraps of childhood

Stuck to our twenty years

We loved each other because

Because, because, because

But now you see

We cannot be unaware of

What it is necessary we see a little

The different things

We loved each other because

It is necessary to love each other despite

Despite, despite the rain

Falling on our Summers

Despite the sky of soot

And the days without clarity

Despite all the big dreams

Of which we are returned

As Adam and Eve

Of the paradises returned

Despite the clairvoyances

Of our indulgent hearts

Despite familiarisation

Woven into the wire of the years

It is necessary to love one another despite

Despite a lot of things

But now you see

We cannot be unaware of

That the love itself transformed

And its culmination

This is when we are the cause

Because of...despite.

OMG I've got major goosebumps now!  This one DEFINITELY transcends language barriers. Now that I know what it emans...it makes sense. The FEELING of the song is perfect for the lyrics.

Oh and..someone mentioned Passion Céline Dion. Is it back up?? I thought Sylvain moved into a mental asylum at last?

I just went to it so yeah. I think we're talking about the same one. Alex_Incognito told me about it in the Je Danse Dans Ma Tete thread and it was working when I hit the link.

Je ne suis pas celle

I am not the one that lights illuminate

I am not the one that changes with time

If despiste everything Iv stayed the same

It's to fulfill my childhood dreams

I wanted one man, one for dancing,

I wanted to sing to enchant,

I wanted nights longer than the days

before you go away, I wanted always

I am not the one you think(i am)

I am not that one

Listen to me

I am not the one you see

that tells you, you have to believe me

I am not that girl there

I wanted a fireplace to warm us up

A large bed to sleep snuggled against him

I wanted to tame the birds of the forests

hear innocent children having fun

I wanted to teach them joy

Tap on sardine tins with them

I wanted to send messages of tenderness

A bit of love,to idle lands

I am not the one you think(i am)

I am not that one

Listen to me

I am not the one you see

that tells you, you have to believe me

Hi, since my friend Nati (AKA celineargento) is God knows where, and hasn't posted yet the song "Nadie lo entiende" by Cafe Quijano feat. Celine, I'll do it here (i hope she won't mind)

Far from the odes without meaning

with the wit of a crook, punished without pain

Far from children coming closer

from children kissing him, taking care of him, waiting for him...

Close of a life that's getting dry

that's shatters his head, and owes him honesty

Close, of the clock of tragedies

of the unfair of his prison cell

that sofocates him and locks him up

Chorus:

Let it come and tell me, the one who can

why suddenly some people get to open the door that hides the father figure

Why does it open? Why does time stops and looses

One life that feels and noone understands

Why does a man suffers if noone loves him

Why life is pleased to hurt?

Maybe the fairys of science, luckily in time will give him his conscience back

the one he lost some month, in march.

Maybe hugs will be helpfull, words would help him, and portraits with faces of his saints, will please him

Repeat chorus

I hope you find it helpfull to understand the meaning. It's obviously about a man in jail, and the singer prays he finds comfort in his family, the love they feel for him.

Here's the original Spanish lyrics

Lejos de las odas si razón

con el ingenio de un truhán

castigado sin dolor.

Lejos de unos hijos que se acercan

de unos hijos que le besan

que le cuidan y le esperan.

Cerca de una vida que le seca

que le rompe la cabeza

y le debe la franqueza.

Cerca del reloj de las tragedias

de lo injusto de tu celda

que te ahoga y que te encierra.

Coro

Que venga y me cuente

el que pueda contarme

por que a alguna gente

de pronto les abre

la puerta que esconde

la imagen del padre.

¿ Por que se abre?

Por que se detiene el tiempo

y se pierde

una vida que siente

y que nadie lo entiende.

Por que sufre un hombre

si nadie lo quiere

¿Por qué la vida

con gusto hiere?

Puede que los hados de la ciencia

con el tiempo y con la suerte

le recobren la conciencia

que perdió en un mes de marzo.

Y puede que le sirvan los abrazos

que le ayuden las palabras

que le gusten los retratos

con las caras de sus santos.

Repite coro

I have to say that I like the idea of collecting translations of Celine's french songs. For me it is sometimes hard to understand all the lyrics so this topic really helps to get to know the meaning(s).

I add the translation of a song that I personally love very much :)

Le blues du businessman (The blues of the businessman)

I'm doing well in my business

I'm doing well in my love affairs

I change secretary often

I have my office on top of a tower

From where I see the town upside down

From where I control my universe

I spend half my life in the air

Between New York and Singapore

I always travel in first (class)

I have my second home

In all the Hilton's on Earth

I can't accept misery

I'm not happy, but I look like I am

I lost humour sense

Since I got the business sense

I succeeded and I'm proud of it

In fact I have only one regret

It's not what I wanted to do

I wanted to be an artist

To be able to do my show

When the airplane touches the ground

In Rotterdam or Rio

I wanted to be a singer

To be able to shout who I am

I wanted to be an author

To be able to create my life

I wanted to be an actor

So every day I would change my skin

And to find myself beautifull

On a big color screen

I wanted to be an artist

To be able to be an anarchist

And live like a,,, millionaire

I wanted to be an artiste

To have the world to do again

To be able to tell why I exist

I know, I tought that the japanese lyrics had other meaning than the english one

just like with Pour que tu m'aimes encore and If that what it takes.

Hi noar...I don't think many of us speak japanese (I wish I did) so that'll be more difficult.

I'm not sure if there's a japanese section in here....have you tried asking someone there? they're probably the nicest people and if someone speaks English, you're done

bye

ok i know on the last page someone kindly linked to some youtube videos which had translations on.I just wanted to write some down so i dont have to watch the video when i listen to my music :thumbsup2:

Je ne vous oublie pas

During my absences sometimes without a doubt

I could have strayed away

Like if I had lost my path

Like if I had changed

So I have some tender words

Just to say it

I'm not forgetting you

No, never

You are deep inside me

In my life, in everything I do

My first loves, my first dreams

Have come with you

This is our story

I'm not forgetting you

No, never

You know so much about me

Of my life, of everything I do

So my happiness, my misfortunes

Are shared with you

This is our story

I'm not forgetting you

Because time can put into a cage

Our dreans and our desires

I make my choices and my travels

Sometimes I pay the price for it

Life smiles at me or hurts me

But whatever my life is

I'm not forgetting you

No, never

You are deep inside me

In my life, in everything I do

My first loves, my first dreams

Have come with you

This is our story

I'm not forgetting you

Even at the other end of the Earth

I continue my story with you

I'm not forgetting you

No, never

You are deep inside me

In my life, in everything I do

My first loves, my first dreams

Have come with you

This is our story

I'm not forgetting you

No, never

You know so much about me

Of my life, of everything I do

So my happiness, my misfortunes

Are shared with you

This is our story

I'm not forgetting you

I'm not forgetting you

This is one of my favorite songs. Thank you so much for the translation. This is such a beautiful song. :) Merci!

Here's the translation of "Sola otra vez"

"I intended to fly, and I met loneliness

I played love without giving, without waiting.

I go out to look for a hint, a signal

to make my dream come true..to love again

Alone again, I don't know how to live

Alone again, without love

I want to know who does a woman feel...

my heart can't take anymore loneliness

Alone again....(repeat chorus)"

As you see, the lyrics are a bit different than in English...but the meaning is pretty much the same:

I DON'T WANT TO BE ALONE ANYMORE!!!! hahaha :sofunny:

saludos
