HDD: Mariah to sell 80-85k next week

YOUR WEAKEND TOP 10 CHART PREVIEW: Good news, kiddies—there will be five debuts in next week’s Top 10, and one of them will actually break 100k! That would be Neil Diamond, whose second Rick Rubin-produced Columbia album is headed toward the top of the chart, with a projected 125-130k. Behind the old-timer will be RCA/RMG’s debuting Clay Aiken, who should come tantalizingly close to six figures, with 90-95k. Madonna’s Hard Candy (WB) appears to be melting toward 85-90k in its second week, probably good enough for #3 in this age of diminished expectations, though she probably can’t wait to get her act to Live Nation. Another diva, Mariah Carey (Island/IDJ), will likely be next with 80-85k, while the sophomore album of J/RMG’s Gavin DeGraw is headed for a bow in the neighborhood of 70-75k, which would probably get him to #5. The rest of the Top 10 should go something like this: Toby Keith (Show Dog/Mercury Nashville), 70-75k: Leona Lewis (Syco/J/RMG), 65-70k; Josh Groban (143/WB), 50-55k; and Dierks Bentley (Capitol Nashville), 28-32k; with #10 up for grabs between Reprise’s Michael Buble Wal-Mart exclusive EP at 28-32k and Taylor Swift (Big Machine/Universal Republic) 28-30k. You are now free to get back to going through your Facebook notifications. (5/9a)

Next week top 5:-

NEW 01- Neil Diamond - Home Before Dark (125-130k)

NEW 02- Clay Aiken - On My Way Here (90-95k)

01 03- Madonna - Hard Candy (85-90k)

02 04- Mariah Carey - E=MC2 (80-85k)

NEW 05- Gavin DeGraw - Gavin DeGraw (70-75k)

Are Madonna's first-week sales numbers a disappointment? Blame Mariah.

While Madonna scored yet another No. 1 album, it may not have been the blockbuster opening that some were expecting.

She sold 280,000 copies of "Hard Candy," according to Nielsen SoundScan, in its first week in stores. First things first: With the days of the CD as the music format of choice seemingly numbered, any album that sells in the six-figure range is a bonus for the music biz these days.

And those who rolled their eyes at yet another blog alluding to the death of the CD, ask Madonna herself, who last year signed a $120-million deal with a touring company in Live Nation. And this summer, fans will get to see that deal start paying off. Madonna will be generously coming to a whopping 16 North American markets, according to Billboard.

Great Diva Sales Race of 2008

Yet it's also hard not to note that Madonna's "Hard Candy" sold about 180,000 copies less than Mariah Carey moved two weeks ago. She's still significantly ahead, though, of the 181,000 copies sold by Janet Jackson's "Discipline" when it debuted in March.

But back to Carey. Her "E=MC2" scored the highest debut of the year when it opened at No. 1 after selling 463,000 copies. In just three weeks on the chart, "E=MC2" has sold more than 740,000 copies.

Album sales may be down across the board, but Madonna would certainly be expected to be closer to Mariah than, say, Leona Lewis, on the diva totem pole. Newcomer Lewis entered at No. 1 a few weeks ago, her debut, "Spirit," selling 205,000 copies.

To compare "Hard Candy's" stats to Madonna's last record: in 2005 her Euro-influenced "Confessions on a Dance Floor" opened with 350,000 copies, according to Billboard. It's rare these days for an artist to actually top the first-week sales of a prior album, but if anyone could do it, it would certainly be Madonna. And Mariah just did it.

So it's easy to view Madonna's sales tally as a disappointment, a sign that she's losing her grip on the pop marketplace. But don't.

CD sales just an added bonus

Billboard downplays Madonna's sales dip, noting that "Confessions" opened during the holiday season. The trade also fairly points out that Mariah may have benefited from appearances on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "American Idol."

On one hand, Madonna is a bigger international brand than Mariah will ever be, and she was just inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

But on the other, the marketing campaign for "Hard Candy" was one based less on promotion than it was partnerships. The album may not have been endorsed by Oprah, but the marketing campaign leading up the release of "Hard Candy" has been far from what anyone would call subtle. There's the Sunsilk commercials, the branding promotions with Verizon, the odd YouTube video and the video gift to gossip blogger Perez Hilton.

Additionally, Madonna's lead single "4 Minutes" has been inescapable. It's still a top-10 hit, and her second single, "Give It 2 Me," has just debuted inside the top-100. But even more important, "4 Minutes" has given Madonna something she didn't have at all with "Confessions on a Dance Floor," and that's a hit on U.S. radio.

But if there's a problem -- if this is a problem -- with "4 Minutes," it's that it is as much a Justin Timberlake or Timbaland single as it is one from Madonna. It's also a song that will spur download sales, but not necessarily album sales.

For instance, as fun and silly as it may be, "4 Minutes" also could have appeared on Timbaland's 2007 album "Shock Value," or Timberlake's "FutureSex/LoveSounds." It's a song fit for an iTunes playlist as much as it is a new Madonna album.

Indeed, by lining up today's top producers and superstars -- Timberlake, Timbaland, Pharrell Williams, Kanye West, etc. -- Madonna has created an album that may sound swell stacked up with everyone else on the radio, but it also risks the danger of failing to set itself apart.

But "Hard Candy" doesn't really need to stand alone in order to be a success. The end result is an album seemingly built to sell millions of single-track downloads, ring tones, videos and bits of whatever digital accessories exist. And for pop music as business plan, that may prove to be one of Madonna's smartest moves yet, whether intentional or not.

Alright, since i'm a new lamb(I used to hate her, now I love her), I wanted to post my review of E=MC2. Overall, it's a really good CD with some missteps

1. Migrate - Amazing song. I used to hate it when I first hear it, but it grew on me, and now I love it. Very catchy, and I could see this being a huge hit on the charts. Even T-Pain wasn't horrible. 10/10

2. Touch My Body - I hated this song from the beginning, and I still do. It's so cheap, badly written, and not sexy. *This* was a #1 hit? She can do better than this crap. 2/10

3. Cruise Control - This song is pretty much a hit or miss, and I thought it was a hit. I loved the reggae feeling of it, and the fact that Mariah stepped out of her comfort zone to do this. Good job! 9/10

4. I Stay In Love - Defanitly reminiscent of 2005's smash hit We Belong Together. I would say it's second to Side Effects for being the best song on the album. Great lyrics, very emotional vocals, and an overall amazing song. This should defanitly be a single. 10/10

5. Side Effects - A heartwrenching, personal song from Mariah. You can tell that she put her heart and soul into the lyrics. Her vocals are amazing, and it's the best track on the album. 10/10

6. I'm That Chick - Sorry, this song really didn't do it for me. The song had this weird disco vibe that really didn't fit for me. It's not a standout at all. I pretty much dislike it a *lot*. 3/10

7. Love Story - Very good song. It's not a huge standout, but it's still a very good song, with a good performance from Mariah. Though it's not the best choice for the next single. 8/10

8. I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time - Another very good song, like Love Story. It has a very old school feeling, and that's what makes the song really good. Mariah's vocals are once again really good, though it does feel that she says "I'll be" a million times. 8/10

9. Last Kiss - A very good song, but it's pretty much a filler track. Everything about the song is just good. I would defanitly compare it to Love Story and I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time when it comes to the quality of it. 8/10

10. Thanx 4 Nothin' - Your typical female empowerment, "Goodbye you evil boyfriend" song. Brings nothing new to the table, and Mariah can do so much better than this. 4/10

11. O.O.C. - A very dissapointing song. Very annoying, and it pales in comparison to the gems on this album. 4/10

12. For The Record - Finally, another amazing song on this album. Great lyrics, amazing vocals from Mariah, and defanitly one of the best on the album. Mariah works wonders again with her ballads. 10/10

13. Bye Bye - I never thought this was the best choice for a single(I Stay In Love would've been much better), but it's still a great song. The lyrics are very personal and emotional, and Mariah delivers a great vocal performance. 9/10

14. I Wish You Well - Just Mariah, a piano, and a choir. I love that about the song, how simple the arrangement is. It brings back a very old-school-Mariah feeling. Another gem on this album, and the perfect closer. 10/10

Overall, it's a really good album that I would defanitly listen to a lot, though I would skip some tracks. Here is the Top 5 tracks on the album for me

1. Side Effects

2. I Stay In Love

3. For The Record

4. I Wish You Well

5. Migrate
