Mariah Apologizes for Performance at MJ Memorial

'It was a true and honest emotional moment,' she tells 'Today' of her voice cracking during 'I'll Be There.'

 

Mariah Carey had the difficult task of being the first performer at the Michael Jackson memorial on Tuesday. And when her voice cracked in the first few moments of her cover of the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There," she said she felt like she disappointed everyone.

 

On the "Today" show Wednesday (July 8), Carey described how hard it was for her to sing on the show and how seeing the casket made it difficult for her to get through the performance. "I feel a little bit like I let everybody down, but I really did try and it was difficult," she said. "But you know what I think? It was a true and honest emotional moment."

 

On Tuesday, Mariah also took to her Twitter to share with her fans her disappointment over her performance and how completely emotional she became at the show. "Trying to sing today was basically impossible for me," she wrote. "I could barely keep myself from crying."

 

She apologized for the performance, during which she was joined by her "MTV Unplugged" duet partner Trey Lorenz. "I'm sorry that I wasn't able to pull it together and really do it right, but I was literally choked up when I saw him there in front of me," she tweeted. "One thing I know is, we will never really have to say goodbye to MJ. His legacy lives on through his music and the millions of people he inspired with his timeless music. He will be forever in our hearts."

Entertainment Weekly critic Ken Tucker about Mariah's apology:

 

Mariah Carey apologized for her performance at yesterday's Michael Jackson memorial, saying she "wasn't able to pull it together and really do it right," and that she was "sorry." She made the comments via her Twitter page. Check out her version of "I'll Be There" and I'll tell you why I think she's being too hard on herself.

 

I don't think Carey has anything to apologize for. In fact, at a time when so many singers are trying for the kind of note-for-note "perfection" that shows like American Idol have convinced too much of the population is the way singers should sound, I found Carey's emotionally jagged performance all the more moving. Indeed, this is what first-rate pop singing is truly about: emotion expressed through the grain of the voice, not impeccable, often sterile, pitch and timbre.

 

And here's what MSNBC reporter Courtney Hazlett had to say about Mariah's performance:

 

"I wanted to play Mariah Carey right there because she's getting a lot of criticism for not hitting some notes. I think she was the only performer who didn't get a chance to rehearse at the Staples Center prior to this memorial service. That goes counter to everything you're taught in 'How To Be a Celebrity/Singer' school. She wanted to be there. She was clearly emotional. She could only make it happen if she didn't rehearse so I say that's fantastic that she did this and it really speaks to exactly why the people who stood on that stage stood on that stage - they wanted to be there for Michael Jackson."

Mariah moves up to number 31 on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles & Tracks.

 

"Obsessed" is poised now to make its lofty debut on the Hot 100 next week, as it skips 12 positions to land at number 1 on the Bubbling Under chart. :w00t:

Uh Oh! "Fire Burning" and... "Boom Boom Pow" have made "Obsessed" go down two spots on the iTunes chart. :huh:

 

The love here in Spain has diminished as well, as it tumbles to number 10.

 

But the love is zooming in... Italy! :lmao: It's currently at number 2.

"Obsessed" Video to Premiere on AGT July 15!

The most anticipated music video to "Obsessed," Mariah's first single off her new album, Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel will finally arrive on Wednesday, July 15th! Mariah made the announcement on her Twitter page earlier tonight:

 

MariahCarey: Just wanna let you know that the world premiere of the "Obsessed" video is on "America's Got Talent(hosted by NCx0x) Wed.night..July 15th!

 

America's Got Talent will air on Wednesday at 9:00pm ET/PT on NBC.

They need to start the promotion already. I'm surprised it's doing that good in iTunes, without repressing the downloads, without promo, without video and without airplay...

it was removed already. i feel so lucky to catch it early. :P

 

it was definitely her most entertaining video ever! oh and they used a TEOM standee! :laugh:

 

i just think the camera was a bit shaky and i'm growing tired of her same facial expression in all of her music videos. but overall, the video is hilarious! i'm officially OBSESSED with the video! :lol:

It's an OK video. Her worst that she's done with Brett. Some great things(the stalker and his place, TEOM bedspread, him getting hit by the bus) but most of it is just her in a photoshoot touching herself. She looks hot but that isn't enough to save the video. Hopefully the version premiering on AGT is more plot and less Mariah-Photoshoot-Look-At-Me-I'm-So-Hot scenes. The Touch My Body video is better and I hate that song. :P

Mariah moves 31-28 on R&B Hip-Hop singles and tracks, and "Obsessed" blasts onto the Hot 100 at number 11. :clap:

 

Also from Billboard: Mariah Carey returns with "Obsessed," her 40th chart entry. With the bow, Carey becomes just the eighth female artist in the Hot 100's history to notch at least 40 charted titles.

This is totally off topic and I don't have iTunes, but my mom just got me the Butterfly album which I know is old but I really like Fourth of July and Babydoll. :)

 

edit: And sadly I missed the video premiere and I reminded myself to watch it.

Butterfly is my favorite Mariah album! I think that's one of the ones I recommended to you. And you didn't miss much with the Obsessed video. It's on YouTube right now.

Butterfly and Daydream are my fav Mariah albums. 'Babydoll' is one of her best album tracks. I think you'll like 'Close My Eyes' and 'Beautiful Ones' as well :)

Yes it was!! I tried to find Rainbow but no luck with that one yet. I'm still listening to the album all the way through.

Do you have Daydream? If not then I think you should listen to the songs from that album on youtube and then if you like it, maybe get it as well :)
