AdrienneM Posted June 18, 2020 at 10:57 AM Posted June 18, 2020 at 10:57 AM This was what a vocal maestro (who is trained in the true bel canto technique) had to say about Celine's recording of O Holy Night: "This is a very interesting recording for several reasons. Regardless of technical things in the voice that could be better, mainly because she went to a teacher who was not great at a certain point in her career, you can hear a couple of things. First, as I have often stated, depth/scuro/darkness is in opposition to nasality. While this teacher had her go nasal, the thing that saved her voice in the long run is that when she sings out fully she blares it out with depth and the nasality disappears. Secondly, as Tom observed and said while watching her, "she is very musical." Third, she doesn't try to sound fake singing. Just a natural sound. Lastly, she can actually sustain a note with vibrato which is lacking in non-classical singers today." Tom LoMonaco was one of the last great opera singers and he complimented her! Celine was fantastic during her earlier years (early '90s). Yes, she was nasal and still is but when she sings it out, there is no sign of nasality. When she was younger, her larynx was low to neutral, and her belts are open and connected to her core chest, indicating good engagement of thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle. Now, you can hear wear and tear in her voice when she reaches the high notes using twang and mask resonance, both of which are very damaging. The thing that saves her voice a lot is her strong foundation from her earlier years. All the vocal coaches from then only further damaged her voice. You do realise heady mix, twang and placement of her voice in her mask was the only thing that SAVED her voice? From 1993-1997 she was literally screaming at times above D5, constantly straining and being chesty, noticeably after 1998 she started to utilise heady mix when it came to upper belts and it’s the only thing that has saved her voice from complete and utter destruction, because if she kept belting the way she was from 93-97 she would not have a voice anymore Quote
Céline RO Posted June 18, 2020 at 11:29 AM Posted June 18, 2020 at 11:29 AM That’s why she should change her vocal coach now.. I think when they’re doing sessions they just gossip. I like her voice back in 2006-2009. Sounds fuller/thicker but they change her vocal coach back in 2014 when Aldo was still her manager They changed it again more recently and her most recent coach (as of September 2019) said that Céline is very determined and works a lot on her voice, more than ever before. 2 Quote The best is yet to come...

In the 90s she sounded like she was pushing her voice to the limits, often sounding strained and raspy even on belts as low as Bb4. Now it seems like she’s protecting her voice more and avoiding/lipping more and approaching notes more gently. Edited June 18, 2020 at 11:35 AM by Céline RO 1 Quote The best is yet to come...

And if anything to me her voice is richer now than it was before. Also, I'm glad she changed her vocal coach as whatever they were telling her to do was wrong, she sounded constantly exhausted, nasal and even congested, her belts weren't as full either, if you compare say Think Twice from the TCWT to now it's extremely evident that even now her voice is more powerful than it was on that tour I don’t know... her voice changed in 2015 while her 2016 voice change is understandable. Well, we have different opinions about it. But i think her voice is much thicker before. One example is her performance In Star Academy. Listen to how full/thick her voice was. (Very different from her 2003 voice) I don’t hear any nasal and exhausted vocals here. And her diction is way better here. And i like how she sing here. Slowly but clear. Very relax. Very pleasant to the ears. No thin “eur” words. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHUONXfN-Tg&t=942s Now, she’s like only focusing on the high notes like there’s tense building up in preparing the high belted notes and too much “yodeling”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjA19lvIqME So, i prefer her old vocal coach where she sounded very relax and not making her singing faster like she’s about to pee Also, her 2003 singing style changed in 2004 or 2005. I’m sure her vocal coach have a big help in that changes. Edited June 18, 2020 at 02:18 PM by jpatdeleon09 Quote

Really? But i find it better than now. I think her singing here are more open (just ignore the eq of the fancam) compared to "eur" instead of I surrend"Ahhh" which sounded open like this one and stable/consistent and more controlled. I think her worst part was in 2003-2004 (a new day) where she sounded too excited that lead her singing style became too thin and nasal. Thank god it changes in 2006 Now, It's not consistent anymore. There's always a "yodeling" singing style of Céline and I remember the "granny" singing style back in 2016 Coz' (yodel) I've been shaking I've (yodel) been bending Beckwerds The clogged sound (isn't that an issue last last week?) It's not during this era but for the current era (Singing like in a can?) So, I want to blame the new vocal coach. Edited June 18, 2020 at 06:55 PM by jpatdeleon09 1 Quote

Céline RO Posted June 19, 2020 at 07:35 AM Posted June 19, 2020 at 07:35 AM (edited) Is it just me or has Céline’s voice improved quite drastically recently. She’s been sounding amazing since the very first show of 2020! In 2019 many performances of songs such as IYAMT, TLBSEPT, YTV or RDMH were hit or miss whereas in 2020 she nails them almost all the time. To me her voice also doesn’t sound as dry or thin as before. It’s as if she’s gained some natural reverb and a more clear, lighter tone. Even her very high belts don’t sound quite as “heady” anymore. I think her voice now is the best it’s been since 2015! I hope this continues! Her performance of “Une chance qu’on s’a” gives me hope. I’m so ready for 2021! I do not know.and now in 2019 and 2020 your voice is clear and with colors, this is less nasal, I like it, I hope it stays that way. Quote

That’s why i prefer her vocals in back in final years of A New Day... her 2003-2005 vocals were so different compared to late 2006-early 2008. And it came back in early 2009 (her performance in Star Academy). I love it. Her voice sounds full again. Then, 2011 came. I noticed also a big difference on her vocals. Yes! It sounded strong, loud, but again it loses (a little) the fuller sound of her voice that i like. I think as she gets older her voice will keep on becoming thin and more nasal. I think for now, she should focus in removing the yodeling singing. I hope her vocal coach can help her with that. i prefer the fuller sound than high thin notes like she’s doing now.
