Céline's Blues Posted March 4, 2006 at 12:44 PM Posted March 4, 2006 at 12:44 PM Hey everybody! I hope everyone is doing well. I just wanted to say something which seems to make sense to me. I think the reason Celine's voice seems less powerful to some of you, is that the poor one has been singing 5 nights a week non-stop for FOUR WHOLE YEARS IN AN ARID AND EXTREMELY DRY DESERT! Plus, she has to talk to her son, to the audience, she travels abroad and sings live in foreign TV shows, and does interviews and stuff. Celine is no fool, she knows her life rests on her voice and vocal cords. She may say that now she is in control of her vocal cords, but recently she confessed that her voice sends her signals that it is tired and needs some rest. In addition to this, she said she is still taking singing lessons while in Vegas. Her voice did not change, she just is trying to adapt it to the harsh weather of a desert. She changed her technique to accomodate her vocal cords to the dry air. I am sure once Vegas is over and that she gets some good rest, her voice will be back in shape again...because her unique instrument is a heaven-sent gift. Last but not least, i guess Vegas is another highlight in Celine's career. For a Francophone to run a show for 4 years in the US has never been heard-of before. There had been some French-speaking acts in Vegas before her, but she is the only one to put on such a massive extravaganza, and for such a long time. Elvis did Vegas for a certain number of years, Cher did it for 3 years ( not for 5 nights/week, though). So Celine is gonna be the only female artist to do such a thing. She is gonna be the New Queen of Vegas, as Elvis is named the King of Vegas. That would be one important achievement in her resume. She sold millions of records, sold out huge stadium tours, broke records, made history...and still is. I am sure she is gonna come up with something spectacular after Vegas is over. Or maybe she is gonna launch a new English album, tour for a little while, then take a break for 2 more years. Do not forget she is even planning to try acting, too. Do you remember, back in 1998, when she said some producers wanted her to portray the famous French singer "Edith Piaf" in an adaptation movie? Maybe the movie is gonna be about the artist in her 40s, and Celine would fit perfectly for the role by that age. One thing you should all remember my friends, Celine and Rene always plan far ahead of all the others. We might think they live life one day at a time as they say they do, and i am sure they enjoy more of life now, but i am convinced they have plans for her career in the loooong run too. So, please do not worry, her voice is just going through a phase...and you should ALL be thankful she does not have what they call "Vegas Throat", which is for an artist to lose their voice while singing there. Now one question: Would you prefer Celine to still put out records and try to improve her sound bit by bit? or would you like for her to lose her voice forever? Think about it, you will find the answer deep within. I am happy to be part of this amazing forum, and to be just like you guys a fan of the most touching female artist the world will ever know. God bless. Samy <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You preach on, Samy and let the whole congregation say AMEN! Thank you for this insightful and interesting post with which I wholeheartedly agree. ANewDay... Posted March 4, 2006 at 05:27 PM Posted March 4, 2006 at 05:27 PM i think CELINE can definitely still hold her own, vocally, so to speak... i also think that one thing celine has, and always will have, is the fact that she actually connects brilliantly with the material she records, and just bascially makes things so emotional, tangible, real... she's always done this, and always will; i believe it's totally of second nature to her to connect and emote the way she does... like any singer, she is known to have bad nights (e.g., AND...LILV), but can still kick some butt on stage... her voice changes, but she still excels at what she does, which is the reason why there are still so many of us who so strongly support her and her work... p.s. : sorry for UPPERCASING in a few posts earlier today; i forgot about how i was asked by a moderator to refrain from doing so (but it just so is a habit of mine)... alas... - ANewDay... 1Celine12 Posted March 6, 2006 at 01:44 AM Posted March 6, 2006 at 01:44 AM I think that Céline can still sing like she did in the 90's, but she still needs to train her voice like she did when she realized that she couldn't sing the 2nd song at a show. Where and what wqas the name of the show that she went crying to René and realized she couldn't sing anymore? Quote
LVCeline Posted March 6, 2006 at 02:08 AM Posted March 6, 2006 at 02:08 AM I think her vocal status is a combination of her sloppy technique, which I think develops from having to cope with singing so much for her show; it's easier to hit higher notes with a nasal voice, than with a full voice. And also the fact that she's admitted she isn't taking care of her voice like she used to, and singing simply isn't her number 1 priority anymore. To me, it' just doesn't seem like she tries hard enough. It's odd to me that she can sound absolutely fantastic one appearance (i.e. singing Destin, and JNVOP for the kids show) and pretty bad another performance (i.e. LBDBM for that one show). I really hope after Vegas she can get some rest, because the wear and tear is really coming through these last couple years. Quote

DION: You know, Vegas throat, here it's very difficult, because we're trying to, first of all, for a singer, you need the humidity. These are muscles. You need the flexibility, the moisture. It's like facial cream. You live in the desert. It's not possible to live in the desert. KING: My wife sang here last week. She said you have to have vaporizers, air conditioning, don't put it on. DION: So what we did, when we came here, I said, Rene, I don't want flowers. I don't want caviar. I don't want champagne. But if they really want to know what I want, I want humidity. They thought we were crazy because we're trying to humidify the desert. VanMerlin Posted March 6, 2006 at 06:21 PM Posted March 6, 2006 at 06:21 PM I think her vocal status is a combination of her sloppy technique, which I think develops from having to cope with singing so much for her show; it's easier to hit higher notes with a nasal voice, than with a full voice. I really hope after Vegas she can get some rest, because the wear and tear is really coming through these last couple years.<{POST_SNAPBACK}> I agree with the first paragraph. But when it comes to not trying hard enough, one's voice is a tremendously fickle thing. One day it will be smooth and everything will be stellar, the next day it could be something you ate or the way you slept or even a cough that scraped your chords in the morning and boom...you're voice can't find the right shape for the right tone. Then some days, everything will be magical and nothing could go wrong. I don't think we can expect the same quality of voice from one day to the next from any singer, not even Celine. It would be the same as expecting an athlete to always win the same race despite so many factors. But I'm sure she tries to give it her all as much as she can. She's nothing if not a professional. So while I agree with the sloppy technique arguments that float around here, I don't agree with her being lazy or not working hard enough. Though I do think she takes the easy way out often by lipsynching when she could probably pull off a perfectly wonderful performance or resorting to throatiness/nasality when it's not required (and us annoying), but hey, that's up to her. All I can do is choose to listen or not, eh? Becomes frustrating sometimes, though. Quote
Etpuisunjour Posted March 7, 2006 at 12:47 AM Posted March 7, 2006 at 12:47 AM Her voice has definitely changed as the years have passed, but she still sounds beautiful 99% of the time. I'll admit that there some performances that I remember being disappointed in (and if I could remember I'd name them), but for the most part she still sounds great to me. It's funny; while I'm definitely less into Céline than I used to be (in terms of gossip, magazines, news shows, etc), there are still times when I can just be surfing the net and some song like "Just Walk Away" or "My Heart Will Go On" will come on and I'll find myself stopping and listening. Despite the fact that I've heard these songs a thousand times. She can still make me cry just by how beautiful her voice is and was. But if there's one thing I really don't like, it's seeing something that's assumed to be a live performance when it's actually lip-synched. I don't mind if Céline is having trouble with her voice and needs some time off, but I really don't think people are paying to see lip-synching. There's a clip I have from Céline Dion Rare Videoclips that's "Pour Que Tu M'aimes Encore" from L'Enfer C'est Nous Autres where it seems obvious that she's mouthing along. And the "live" performance that's on the One Year, One Heart special. And now I can't remember what song that is either. Obviously I need to get more into Céline. I know full well that Céline is capable of sounding exactly like the album, but in live performances it always seems that she alters it at least slightly. So when a "live" song sounds note for note beat for beat like the album, I get suspicious. Quote "The only power I have - the only power any of us have - is to be who we are." Jacen Solo, "Traitor"
bgold50 Posted March 7, 2006 at 03:12 AM Posted March 7, 2006 at 03:12 AM Those of you who are singers will already know that as a person ages, their voice changes. It's inevitable. The voice deepens. Depending upon how good (or bad) you've been to it, it can get better or worse. Mariah Carey is a perfect example. I adore early Mariah. But she has never taken care of her voice the way that Celine has. She loves to go out clubbing (SMOKE...death to any singer!), she drinks (mostly champagne) and does not rest her voice sufficiently. She may now be doing vocal excercises, but I doubt it. I know that she did not used to.Celine, on the other hand, takes incredible care of her exquisite instument and treats it with the respect that it derserves. It is not only an instrument that requires care, it is also a muscle that requires work. Celine does both. She rests her voice by spending days not speaking (and we all know how she LOVES to talk!). She does breathing and vocal excercises consistantly. She does not strain her voice. She is very careful about her diet (no dairy!), etc. Celine is probably the greatest singer on the planet and there are good reasons why her voice has lasted and held up as well as it has.If she doesn't hit some of the "money notes" anymore, I'm pretty sure it's not because she can't, but because she realizes that it would be foolish to do so. It would strain her voice. As I said initially, her voice is changing with age and that is perfectly normal. If you ask me, Celine's in by no means worse. It's just slightly different. Let's give her credit where credit is due. Nobody can stop the aging process. Celine has adapted her singing to make the most of her voice a it changes and continues to change. The only other singers (besides opera singers) that I consider to be in the same or similar leage with Celine are Barbra Streisand, Lara Fabian, Linda Eder, and Mariah Carey (for her first 5-6 albums only). If you've never heard Lara or Linda, you really should listen to them both. Amazing vocalists...oh...one more, but I haven't heard her in many years...Maureen McGovern. I don't know how her voice has fared over the years, but it used to be pretty stunning. Out of all of the above, however, only Lara Fabian and early Mariah Carey have anywhere near the control and technique that Celine has.Just my 2 cents!Regards,Brian Quote

Filine Posted March 10, 2006 at 11:57 AM Posted March 10, 2006 at 11:57 AM I personally love the way she sings now more because I feel it's closer to who she is as a real person. She proved herself, we know she mastered all the difficult vocal techniques and I sure she would be able to get there again if she wanted to but that is hard work and she would need to devote her precious free time to work on that daily and not talk and rest her voice, like she used to!Right now she sounds warmer and more sincere then ever and if there are a few flaws here and there who cares, she still sings a thousand times better than anyone out there...she still touches me...she is still there for me. It didn't change. And what matters most to me is that she is happy and can do all she wants to do and still sing for us...and like this...it's amazing You rock Céline!! Scout Posted March 10, 2006 at 12:43 PM Posted March 10, 2006 at 12:43 PM It's inevitable that with age the voice changes. But Celine's one sounds always great and powerful!!!! Quote
streep101 Posted March 10, 2006 at 03:33 PM Posted March 10, 2006 at 03:33 PM I agree that Celine's voice is more amazing now than ever. We need to keep in mind that she can STILL sing better now at 38 than any other performer who has had a career as long as hers. Compare her to Mariah Carey, who also has a strong career right now, and it's almost as though Mariah can't even sing anymore (because she can't). Obviously, one's voice changes over time. No matter how talented she or anyone is, her voice is just not going to sound the same at 38 as it is when she recorded "Where Does My Heart Beat Now" or "Think Twice" or "All By Myself" or even "I Surrender." It's evolving. But I think it's evolving for the better. Isn't is better to hear the subtle, but often amazing, changes in her voice than to hear the already-done high belting of past ballads? Moreover, Celine has even admitted, most recently on "The View", that she now "trains" her voice. That is, in the early-to-mid 90s, she screamed, or belted, up to those F's (like in "All By Myself"). Granted, it sounded amazing, but it wasn't healthy. Now she is placing most of the tone more forward into her nose, which is healthier, thus creating more of a "mix" than a straight belt. Also, putting less pressure on her throat allows her to have more flexibility (and we all love it when she riffs off the melody on cover songs). Is her tone thinner? Absolutely not. Listen to the key change in Sharon Stone's "Come Together Now." She blows everyone out of the water. Listen to her descant on "Nadie lo entiende." She is belting higher than she ever has before (up to a b flat ABOVE the F in "All By Myself"). And on "Let Your Heart Decide," she is creating that vibratto as a style, forcing it ON PURPOSE. Nobody sounds better than she does now, not even young Celine. She's improving. How's that for contribution to the forum. Quote

Céline's fans have to understand that their idol won't ever sound like she did 10 years ago. Yes, TEN years ago which is quite a long period of time. A period throughout which this woman has achieved truly remarkable things DESPITE of so much criticism from all over the world. She did her thing, she sang, she recorded, she released albums. And still she has her voice - I also bet she's very well aware of her vocal status quo. She ain't dumb and that's the reson she adapts her singing now. Quote http://i.imgur.com/dmreJ.jpg
