Pride Week starts in Toronto today!! There have actually been commercials on TV advertising it...with famous personalities in Toronto saying "I have pride"...and then "Show your PRIDE Toronto!!!"

I think it's great!! It's really celebrated with a week's worth of venues and a parade at the end, and is well-accepted. It's nice to see. I've seen what treatment homosexuals receive in other countries when trying to hold a parade down the street...I appreciate the greater acceptance here.

Show your Pride!!!

Posted (edited)

im too confused, i think i should stay straight for all concerned its so much easier, id love to walk down the street and shout i love women, never gonna happen in my life, and its a shame such a short time here we should live how we want

Good look to them......

@Vm: Let's just hope that the new conservitive Canadian's don't get their way and turn it back to being illegal...just like here, were people are so frightened of what might happen if we let two people of the same sex get married. A few people are saying that gay people will want to have more than one partner, and that we are so promiscious that we will want to sleep with who ever and stay married.

What irritates me the most is that we are being judged examined under a light and being held to some outdated Christian charter that straight people don't even follow! Another irritating article was saying that; if we give gay people marriage, why not brothers and sisters? Cousins? Or any people who wish to have marriage, which is just ridiculous to me.

I get really tired of the Gay stereotype that every one has. I'm not a cartoon character, I don't enjoy dressing as a woman and I don't want to parade down a street in drag. I don't want to be derided and made into a spectacle for the happy little straight people and their 2.5 children to look at. We are not a side show, and we shouldn't have to be laughed at to be excepted. In a democracy, isn't it supposed to be that the majority can't rule the minority? Yet here we are, somebody elses way of life is being inflicted upon me. The fact again, that Howard can't give me a proper reason that doesn't have to do with some fundamental protestant crap, outrages me and should outrage every member of our secular society.

Sadly, all Australia seems to be worried about is Interest rates, petrol prices and unfair speed camera fines...our news is like a trashy current affairs shows..so can you imagine what our trashy current afairs shows are like?!?

So sorry, but I don't see much to parade about.

I'm a lesbian polygamist! :giggle:

Now on a serious note:

I STILL don't see what the big deal is about gay marriage, just let us get hitched, shut up and get over it

We might kiss when we are alone... When nobody's watching... We might take it home... We might make out... When nobody's there... It's not that we're scared... It's just that it's delicate... We might live like never before... When there's nothing to give... Well how can we ask for more... We might make love in some sacred place... The look on your face is delicate

I'm saying a lot of things, but basically; I think making a spectacle of ourselves for the enjoyment of people that then turn around and tell us we are not equal enough to count in this country, is wrong. I'm not a bear running on a ball, Gay people aren't entertainment, we are real!

Damien, I agree with everything you said...and I swear to God, if my dumbass PM sets back the gay marriage bill, I'll be more pissed than a moose with its antlers caught in a tree!! That ticks me off like nothing else!! Polls have actually shown that Canada doesn't want to open the issue YET AGAIN...but when you have a PM that worships Bush and the American political system (make me sick) you get someone who doesn't listen worth a damn and only cares about the America's stance.

However, Pride week isn't about a spectacle, about the gay community being entertainment for the straight people to watch and laugh at. It's about just that...pride. The parade doesn't consist of drag queens....many just walk in normal attire (and the parade is only one hour out of an entire week of venues...so much more than just the 'spectacle' as you call it). It's not about showing off or being laughed at...it's a time when the gay community can go out there and be themselves, show who they are, and a time when supporters of their minority and those interested in equality can come and show their numbers. Yes, I know what you're saying about it only being a short thing and then the country goes back to being ignorant and tyrannical, but it's a start!! It shows that the acceptance is starting and is something to be celebrated! It's like Mardi Gras...a party, not a spectacle. They don't say, "Hey, come watch the gays dressed up like Queens!" No, it's "Show your pride...whether you're gay or straight. Come down, see what we are about, see that we are normal and fun and not threatening, and let's get along." Unfortunately, these things are needed to bring the ignorant out of their holes to see that it's not as threatening and scary as they think it is. It takes this to show that gay people are real and not the stereotypical flamboyant creatures they're made out to be...and that they do have a place in the city.

It's incredible though...they've got lectures, workshops, bands, dances, historical displays, speakers...so much more than just a parade. And their mission statement this year is to be "Fearless".

Because straight people don't have to. It's the minorities that have to stick up for themselves in order to be counted...I don't think they're making gay people stand out...but bringing awareness to the fact that gay people are PEOPLE too! I agree, it shouldn't be required...but that's the way it is. Straight people take their ease and freedom for granted, and they should have their heads knocked around once in awhile. It's all about learning about each other and Pride Week inspires the people to learn and banish ignorance. Besides, there's nothing wrong with celebrating your culture. Look at Black History Month...things should be celebrated. Minorities just get too egotistical to think they need it. Obviously, the people in Toronto, straight or homosexual, enjoy it, appreciate it, and make it bigger and more popular every year...I wouldn't want to tell them it's wrong.

The world needs more celebration, aside from religious holidays. We don't celebrate enough!!

Just because one minority doesn't celebrate doesn't mean they all shouldn't. I mean, what if all the minorities celebrated...cultures, ethnicities, orientations, disabilities...I, personally, think that it would allow us to see these people, learn about these people living around us, to whom were blind, and help us wash away our ignorance and fear about these people. It would help erase the taboos. Otherwise, we go day to day and don't even think about the world around us, sheltered in our own little existence, hearing editorial news that wants us to believe what isn't true.

What is wrong with standing out? If I had something that made me standout, I'd celebrate (but I'm as main-stream as you can get). :giggle:

Of course, I'm not saying that everyone wants to stand out and that every homosexual will love that parade and the week. I'm sure there are many that disagree and would be annoyed by it. But for those that do, it's there for them, it's their voice, their expression of fearlessness, and more power to them.

That's what I would have said, Marie. I think that it doesn't matter what a person does or likes. It matters only to them and the people they LOVE.

You make a good point, it is just more than the little parade bit. Everyone keeps focusing of polygamy, incest and marrying animals instead of actually focusing on the real issue BECAUSE THERE ISN'T ONE!!

Amen, brother!! So you come over to Canada, and we'll storm the Parlaiment Buildings, kidnap the PM, ship him to America where he belongs, and take over the seat for ourselves. What do you bet we'd do a better job?

Tourism agency targets U.S. gays and lesbians

Updated Fri. Jun. 16 2006 11:39 PM ET

CTV.ca News Staff

The Canadian Tourism Commission is hoping American gay couples will travel north of the border to marry, even while some MPs hope to revisit the same-sex issue with a free vote.

"It's a bit of a dichotomy to promote ourselves as gay friendly and then have a national leader play to a right-wing constituency base, to reopen the same-sex marriage debate," Kevin Bourassa told CTV Newsnet Friday.

Bourassa married partner Joe Varnell in 2001, in Canada's first legal gay marriage.

The commission is spending $300,000 to woo gay tourists, advertising mainly in magazines and community newspapers.

One such advertisement featured in Passport, a New York-based gay and lesbian travel magazine, proclaims Canada is a great place to marry and that "love is love." It's just in time for Toronto's Pride Week Celebration, starting June 19.

But Justice Minister Vic Toews told The Canadians Press yesterday he believes Harper will hold a free vote on same-sex marriage in the fall.

The Conservatives campaigned on a pledge to allow the vote. If MPs approve the idea of addressing same-sex unions, the government would then introduce legislation changing the definition of marriage back to that of a union between a man and a woman.

Only three Conservative MPs voted in favour of same-sex marriage during the last House of Commons vote on the issue: now-Indian Affairs Minister Jim Prentice, James Moore and Gerald Keddy.

However, Bourassa said the contradicting federal messages won't cause confusion for "politically savvy" tourists.

"Here in the United States, we have heard (President) George Bush talking about a constitutional amendment (to ban same-sex marriage), but nobody really believes that a constitutional amendment is in the books," said Bourassa from New York.

"It's just George Bush playing to his right-wing constituency base every once in a while when his ratings are down. And I think in Canada, people in the United States see it as the same way. They see Canada as a gay-friendly destination, and they think that Stephen Harper is really just playing to his right-wing constituency base ... because he made a promise to revisit the debate. Nobody thinks the debate is going to stop same-sex marriage."

Kenyon also said Canada continues to make steps in recognizing the rights of gays and lesbians.

"I think we've come a tremendously long way since the dark days that preceded Pierre Trudeau's decriminalization of homosexuality," said Kenyon. "I think Canadians should be very proud, and confident that the future is only going to be better for diverse groups in our country."

John Kenyon, chair of the Ontario Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, argued it makes good economic sense to advertise Canada as a hot destination for gay tourists.

As border security becomes an increasing issue and both American and Canadian citizens are encouraged to use passports, 84 per cent of gay Americans have the documents, according to a 2005 report by the Canadian Tourism Commission.

The national U.S. average is just 29 per cent.

The report also claimed that gay tourists spend $5,000 per week, compared to $1,500 for straight tourists.

With a report by CTV's Rosemary Thompson

What do you think? I know a lot of Americans have said, "Yeah, and I hope Canada keeps them!!!"

Posted

For starters, Canada kicks America's arse any day..so blah to Bush.

I think it's pretyt obvious that Canadian's aren't going to overturn something that has only just come into effect. Harper should never have been voted in to power, that's clear, but too late now I guess. (Just like John Howard won the majority in the last election, and he is now firing the commitees of the Senate (the ones that tell people everything wrong he does) and he wil now be appointing members from his own party..can anyone say Facism??)

I am actually thinking about moving to Canada myself. I really am, I was going to move to Europe, but Canada is now high on my list of places. I think if all Gay people from the USA moved to Canada, it would be the USA's loss, and if all the left starts moving out of the USA, think what will happen then??

Yeah, your right Adam, there wouldn't be any more complaints, because if conservitives gain control of everything, the world will stop moving forward, in fact, it will start goin backwards until we are in another cold war and no one has any freedoms.
