Interview Hoda Kotb and Céline - NBC NEWS EXCLUSIVE

Recommended Posts

Hoda says here it's progressive, but from what I've seen in the past - including from the SPSRF, I believe - is that's debatable, and not necessarily the case. It seems the jury is still out on that point.

Yeah I’ve seen both ways discussed. Even Hoda said last week, it can stay at bay with medicine… now she says it’s progressive. I’m not sure how she’s getting her info. I would’ve liked to see Celine’s first interview be with someone with medical background, someone who has at least the basic knowledge of the disorder more; like Dr Jen Ashton for example… but I know how it works and they wanted their big personalities to get the exclusive.

Another commercial for the interview this time with Celine starting to answer Hoda's question

As jarring as all of this is , it’s a clip. We need to wait until the full interview and doc airs to get a true picture of where she is now and what treatment has and is helping. Edited by KyleVan41

It's on the front page of the Guardian now, too: https://www.theguardian.com/us

Bummer that everyone keeps quoting the comparative nothing-burger of a Vogue France interview, instead of the much better British Vogue one.

I can’t get my head round why this interview would air before the doc giving spoilers like this???

It’s publicity…it’s usually done this way… Micheal J Fox had the same plan before his doc. I think 2 weeks was pushing it, but up to a week before would’ve been better.

SPS is a progressive disease - this is how it is officially classified; e.g. https://www.ninds.nih.gov/health-information/clinical-trials/cause-development-and-progression-stiff-person-syndrome

But fortunately, in some group of patients (how large? statistics are lacking due to the rarity of the disease) it is possible to control symptoms in the long term. Unfortunately, even the best symptom control is not guaranteed for the rest of one's life - I know quite a few accounts of patients along the lines of “I was reasonably well for X number of years and suddenly the drugs stopped working.” Let's hope that in Céline's case she will be fine for as long as possible... or that she will live to see a breakthrough in the treatment of this disease.

A couple of days ago there was a item on Dutch television with a SPS patient.

She could function 'normally' with medicine for a couple of years

But later on it eventually got worse.

When I see this clip I also think gurll why comeback? Just be at home with the family. We will understand.

At the same time maybe she knows that this is her at her very best she can get health wise, and who knows what the future will bring. So she will want to get on stage as soon as possible, before it 'maybe' will get in worse in years to come.

Maybe it’ll get worse… maybe there by a medical breakthrough.. who knows but let’s just hope Celine stays stable. Maybe due to her money she’s able to get treatments others aren’t.. so it’s going to be really hard to compare her to others with this disease.

Because she loves what she does and it’s a huge part of her identity?

I honestly think that’s the driving factor.

Illness or not, imagine doing something you love since you’re 12 years old, and then not being able to go out on your own terms.

I get that but how many more spoilers are going to be revealed in this interview ahead of the doc it’s a bit stupid.

Was thinking that too as the interview will probably be at least 30 min taking out commercials and maybe a recap of her life and career. That is a lot of time, so it feels will basically talk about everything they will show in the doc in terms of SPS.

Yes, what would she have to wait for? I don't think any of us realize what a morass of rehabilitation 5 times a week is (especially since SPS patients have to rehabilitate constantly, with no prospect of ever getting it over with). And how powerful the motivation to do so must be. Watching TV in your pajamas won't give you that motivation. Especially since her way of life seems to be to fight, not to go with the flow and passively submit to fate (of course, there is no “better” or “worse” strategy here, people are just different - Céline is an athlete).

Because she loves what she does and it's a huge part of her identity?

I honestly think that's the driving factor.

This. It's part of her identity. Fate struck her as cruelly as a painter who goes blind or a composer who goes deaf (here I recall Irene Taylor's “Moonlight Sonata”). For the first time in her life, not being able to sing what she felt and not being sure if she would ever be able to sing it again, hell. Fortunately, she is strong and has a better time…

We get excited. A return we shout. Then we are reminded the horror of this illness. It’s awful. All we can do is wait.

Would you stop complaining about spoilers and be happy that we finally get proper information?! Some of you guys just can never be pleased

I encourage everyone to use spoiler tags Here when giving information about the documentary, however, If someone wants zero spoilers, they’re going to have to probably live under a rock for the next three weeks. Throw their phone into the Belliago fountain.

Celine looks thinner in her face again. She looked better at the Grammys.

I also noticed in the preview that she does look thinner overall since the SPS announcement and subsequent appearances. Her face looked a little fuller in the documentary clips. I hope she doesn’t get the way she did in 2019 again that was horrible

Don’t be a ***t… some people want to know things ahead of the doc and some don’t,

Spoiler tags have always been used since day one on this forum to keep all parties happy and respect everyone’s wishes.

It’s hard to do this on the mobile version as there is no option. Couple of things I wanted to say but have held back.

You do have a way with words Darren!

Her interview snippet with Hoda when she describes how her voice sounds when she gets a spasm…

Wasn’t it exactly like this?

Maybe we need a separate topic that is for spoiler talk and this one stays just for general info. Then everyone knows to avoid that topic and Spoiler tags not needed.

To be fair, her appearance really changes from one day to another. Just look how much better she looked when she met with Cirque Du Soleil compared to that interview. I remember being surprised how great she looked when she returned in May 2018 after ear surgery. Compared to the end of 2017 or even 2016 she looked a thousand times better and younger. I guess hair, makeup and rest/sleep play a big role.

I don’t take no prisoners… I’ve been on this forum long enough to know how it works and the word I used starts with a T and not a C for your information! ;)

Yeah she said now looking back symptoms started during that tour. Unfortunately back then sure never would have associated what she was experiencing with SPS.
