"I Am: Celine Dion" documentary - Official Topic

I don’t really expect Celine to promote this. But Amazon & Sony certainly should, and the fact that it didn’t even get a mention or screen grab in yesterday’s 1-hour Amazon upfront presentation was worrying.

Dave Platel didn't think this far... They will only give us a post on Twitter and tell us to stream the new docu. Mark my words.

Me. I think there will be a short video message of Celine about the upcoming documentary

Remember the short video message with the outstanding look in a red shiny jacket and a hair ala Taking Chances when promoting the new music video of Ashes. Something like that

I think this article was published prematurely so they pulled it but it looks like Irene is getting an award at the Portland Art Museum on June 21. Would be good timing for her to say something about the doc…

Cyndi Lauper posted a video on Instagram today announcing the soundtrack for a new doc about her career, Let the Canary Sing (releasing on Paramount+ June 4th). The soundtrack is comprised of… wait for it… 13 of her greatest hits. I don’t follow her closely, but, with a quick visit to Wikipedia, I learned she already has at least 3 widely released GH compilations, several regional GH compilations, 2 releases dedicated to remixes, and an additional album of remixes & rarities.

It may be pointless to draw a comparison between her and Céline because… for one, Cyndi is not in the “pantheon” of greatest voices. And secondly, Cyndi herself is a songwriter, so her release output is largely dependent on her own creativity—whereas Céline can draw from an immense pool of songwriters… But I just wanted to point out a few things:

• Cyndi’s ratio of GH to original releases is pretty high (seeing as she doesn’t have as extensive a career as Céline’s bilingual career) and she has quite a few remix/rarity options that Céline fans are still waiting for.

• Cyndi’s doc had a proper film festival release at Tribeca

https://tribecafilm.com/films/let-the-canary-sing-2023

• in the Instagram announcement, she mentioned she picked the songs for the soundtrack out *herself*

• There wasn’t a single negative comment from her fans about yet another rehash of her old hits…

Another point I’ll make is that I doubt she has a “vault” of material collecting dust. It seems like if she did, she would have already released that material. Maybe that is a significant factor as to why her fans (well, the ones commenting) are so positive?

I’d love to have at least a second CD with songs like

Recovering

Send me a lover

All because of you

Map to my heart

The reason I go on

How does a moment last forever

Soul

Open arms

L’amour existe encore - eng version

Have you ever been in love - Spanish

Those are all great choices if they wanted to include rarities and songs that didn’t get a wide release/promotion!!

One omission that’s been bothering me the past few days is “The Hard Way”. It’s a fan-favorite from the Courage album (for those who’ve heard it), her vocals are FIRE, and the message is very fitting. Would have been a great way to end the album & movie.

Sorry, I saw the date for the vinyl release, which tends to be more later than the CD.

I understand it wrong... For a little while I was happy about the release, thinking that maybe they will give us fresh and new songs. So sorry for posting that. Im still writing things on Celine's post, to see if that lead us to something, but I dont know...

I haven’t emailed her mgt yet (the address Darren gave us) - is it worth a shot or a complete waste of time

Interestingly, both the CD and vinyl are marked "limited edition" on this site:

Well, creating artificial scarcity stimulates demand…

And they want us to have demand for the same old again lol

How are they about to ask for preorders of this and aren’t willing to release the official art work. This whole album if we can call it that, it quite laughable to say it mildly.

The Cyndi soundtrack includes one live track, and seven of the tracks are edits specific to this release (granted, that may just mean they fade at different points to the previously released versions, but it's something!). It's also a more wide-ranging compilation than her previously released sets. I'm still not excited by it, but there's a modicum of additional thought that's been put into it!

Cyndi has more items in the vault than you might think - A Night To Remember was entirely reconceived with some new songs/remixed versions after Hole In My Heart and the movie Vibes didn't do very well - getting that unreleased original album would be a real gem.

Imagine if Céline had entirely unreleased albums just sitting there in the vaults?! (I know there was rumor of a second Christmas album in the late-'00s, but I don't think I've ever seen anything but fan speculation on that one.)

Either way, we know that there is enough Celine stuff in the vaults to fill an album! Mariah’s ‘Rarities’ album was absolutely epic and I just don’t get why Celine’s team don’t do something like that.

Because like her or not, (I’m no fan) Mariah cares about her fans And also writes her own music and considers them her babies. Celine can’t seem to be bothered to ask SONY to do more.

Euhm true I suppose, but also:

And also writes her own music and considers them her bread and butter.

I don't think Céline would make much money of old tracks.

Both can be true at once.

Writing is different money or not… I think if Celine wrote her own songs, she would care more that the world gets to hear them, not just because the money behind them as well.

I agree with this BUT to be totally fair we got to say that Celine cares a lot more for her fans when they pay tickets to see live. Mariah, on the other hand, barely puts an effort as a performer. I watched clips from her latest Vegas residency and was shocked with how disengaged she was - the whole thing seemed like a chore for her.

Of course, I meant 100% with releases and music etc. the comparison for live show is a completely different universe. However , with live performances sidelined until further notice… it wouldn’t be a bad thing if Celine began to shift her focus to the actual material at least until she’s able to get back onstage. There’s no pressure on her to record new music just talk to the label and be a little more demanding with her brand.

I agree. I’m a fan of both and the lack of live effort from Mariah has never really bothered me because she keeps releasing things for her fans. It never really worried me the lack of Celine releases because there’s always been a plethora of new live performances to enjoy. For no fault of her own, obviously it’s not been like that the past few years, so it would be nice if she went down the Mariah route for a while.

There are plenty of “Courage” tracks. We haven’t heard all of the ANDHC songs. There’s leftovers from LMBTL after they scrapped the original concept. She has plenty, I’m sure.

While I don't know what will be included in the documentary, nor do I know any other specifics, I do find it a bit odd that not even one of the following songs was included somewhere on the "new" soundtrack:

  • Ce n'etait qu'un reve
  • 3h20
  • The Colour Of My Love
  • All The Way (Duet with Frank Sinatra)

We'll see what happens.
