I really don’t think there would be much/ if any reason to do interviews or appearances for a documentary that’s not even got a release date and will likely answer every question that journalists are going to ask her

Well, Irene posted about it but doesnt have anything else to add yet: https://www.instagram.com/p/C2vKVy8vFIh/?igsh=MThsdTN0cGtjdDA4dQ==
Just looking forward to share more about it soon...

I hope by soon they mean this week.

I need a release date and a trailer. Can't wait to see her. I miss her.

Hope that when the docu is finished most of our questions are answered and we can have some peace of mind as well.

It’s called building momentum… updates as time goes on just like a new movie trailer that has more info added over time or brand new snippets as it gets closer to release, to keep people interested… simply called marketing!

Céline could give a release date, then a short trailer a few weeks/months from now, etc… that’s how it works.

Or if her publicist wanted she could give no red carpet interviews… simply walk the carpet for photos, or just appear to announce an award and that’s it, just to create hype.

Or she may not not appear at all, it’s just the timing of this and the Grammys is incredibly close for it to be a missed opportunity but let’s see… they gave f***** up in the past with opportunities, let’s hope they gave fixed up this time round!

I see in Irene‘s post, that she tagged some of the people involved with this project… There seem to be a couple people who specialize in animation, is she known to use a lot of animation in her work? If so, I wonder how they will use this element to tell Celine story, is she known for doing almost whimsical pieces? This whole project intrigues me, and hopefully it’s done well enough to get Irene moved from Academy award nominated Director, to Academy award winner.

Yea I saw that you quoted yourself lol haha... Must have been accidental typo or pressing the wrong buttons I guess lol...

As far as any promotion or this new documentary, I hope so too, BUT... I am also going to set my expectations VERY low as there might not be any promotions, interviews, appearances at the Grammys, etc from Celine as her health seems to be not so good these days. Just like what happened with the release of "Love Again" last year, we got NO PROMOTIONS from Celine whatsoever, & that was her very first actual movie role, but she still did not do any interviews or performances or anything! So we all need to keep our expectations very low this time around, either that or we all are just going to get majorly disappointed like we all did last year. Just trying to be realistic.

Haha, I've been LinkedIn stalking a bunch of those people for the better part of a year now giggle.gif Glad it wasn't for naught!

(And a few others connected - e.g. the Head of Amazon Video Canada just posted: "I Am: Celine Dion is one of those rare films that leaves you speechless. That you wake up thinking about. We are truly grateful to be entrusted with Celine's story."; EVP of Sony Premium Content: "Very excited for the world to see this beautiful film!")

But re. animation - yes, Irene has used in in a number of films, but very judiciously. For instance in Moonlight Sonata it was used for Beethoven (whom clearly she can't film). In Trees & Other Entanglements, it was used for a bit about the kidnapping of one of the protagonists as a child, which happened back in 1935, so again, no footage.

I’ve reached out to two of people tagged in Irenes post…one being the first post production team. The other the animation team… so STOP reading HERE if you don’t want some veeeeeeery minor detials.

I asked if the film is new or old footage… with the response of “ There's new footage in addition to archival”…. Also, asked if a Celine film will include animation, with the response of “ Alas no. No animation, just titles and photos and treatments. But still worth a look.”

I think some people are thinking of this documentary like it's Titanic or some exciting movie coming out that needs lots of buzz built around it. It's essentially going to be a documentary about SPS and we're likely going to have to brace ourselves to see Celine in very difficult moments. I've seen so many videos of people with SPS and it's horrific. It's going to be heartbreaking to see Celine like that.

Celine may not do ANY interviews for this. She might post about it on social media. If anything, the director might do some interviews.

Yes, I expect interviews with Irene about this. There are quite a few out there about her prior films. Just search Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.

Here’s one from a few years ago. Not about any particular film but about her career in general:

I think Celine will do interviews as well… maybe not many, but I’m sure we get at least one major English and French interview to coincide with the release of this documentary.

So much for that stupid made-up rumor about her announcing her retirement this year, lol

The line about her "road to resuming" her performing career completely shut all that down.

This will be a very interesting and emotional movie to watch as fans.

I think that the docu will be released just before tickets for her new residency will go on sale. It will promote The new show as well, just like 3BAANS. It would be cool if she released a new album along with this docu as well, an album with classic Celine ballads and PMLALS Edited by ryba

Also, it’s quite weird to post about a new docu without giving a specific release date. What’s that? Edited by ryba

Of course those 2 sentence got me:

"As the road to resuming my performing career continues" . Especially in French: "A mesure que je retrouve ma carrière" I think the translation is a bit wrong. In english I understand that she is in the process of trying to get back, still trying to see IF she can get back, working on it, nothing sure. In french, my mother tongue, I understand that the process to get back to it is well initiated, she already managed to get back to it, well part of it and that's how she realised she missed it.

What is sure is that some people already saw the documentary, if it would be attached to a residency launching or a true business comeback (new recording, or smaller projects whatever) we would already know. I'm not sure we will get any conclusion from this documentary about the fact that she's able to get back to business (singing in studio, performing live...), and even less the news of a remission, just that the road is long and there is some hope for something, one day. Remember that 3 month ago apparently her words to people were: I have my good and bad days, and the documentary was already done.

I believe filming wrapped in December.

You asked if there was any animation LOL, confusing Celine with Ghibli much ?!

Why would Celine show up to promote documentary during the Grammys, it's not out yet, no release date, maybe a sneak peek is plausible before ads break or just after but showing up in person, not buying it

Because a number of people tagged in Irene’s post are animators, and because she’s known to use animation in her films.

Amazon MGM Studios Acquires Worldwide Rights to Feature-Length Celine Dion Documentary, I Am: Celine Dion, Directed by Oscar-Nominated Filmmaker Irene Taylor

January 30, 2024

The documentary, which will be available to stream on Prime Video, was produced by Sony Music Vision, in partnership with Sony Music Entertainment Canada, and Vermilion Films.

Amazon MGM Studios announced today that it has acquired worldwide rights to the feature-length Celine Dion documentary, I Am: Celine Dion. From Oscar-nominated filmmaker Irene Taylor, this documentary is a snapshot of a pivotal time in the life and career of one of the most recognized, respected, and successful performers in pop music history, Celine Dion.

This intimate exploration takes viewers on a journey inside Celine’s past and present as she reveals her battle with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS) and the lengths she has gone to continue performing for her beloved and loyal fans. From visiting her couture touring wardrobe and personal effects to spending time in the recording studio, the documentary captures a global megastar’s never-before-seen private life. An emotional, energetic, and poetic love letter to music, I Am: Celine Dion captures more than a year of filming as the legendary singer navigates her journey toward living an open and authentic life amidst illness.

The documentary, which was produced by Sony Music Vision, in partnership with Sony Music Entertainment Canada and Vermilion Films, will be available to stream on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. The Prime Video release date will be announced at a later date.

“This last couple of years has been such a challenge for me, the journey from discovering my condition to learning how to live with and manage it, but not to let it define me,” said Celine Dion. “As the road to resuming my performing career continues, I have realized how much I have missed it, of being able to see my fans. During this absence, I decided I wanted to document this part of my life, to try to raise awareness of this little-known condition, to help others who share this diagnosis.”

“Celine Dion is a global megastar with a career defined not only by her extraordinary work ethic and passion, but by her dedication to her fans,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios. “This documentary is a raw, intimate portrayal of a pivotal time in her personal life and career, pulling back the curtain on her journey as she overcomes an unthinkable diagnosis. It’s an honor to be trusted with her story, and we can’t wait to share it with Prime Video audiences around the world.”

Emmy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Irene Taylor’s most recent film Trees And Other Entanglements was released last year by HBO and explores our human obsession with the arboreal world. Taylor also recently won a Columbia-DuPont Award for her tragic investigation into one of the most trusted institutions in America, Leave No Trace: A Hidden History Of The Boy Scouts (Hulu). Premiering at Sundance in 2019 and later nominated for Special Merit in Documentary Filmmaking at the 2020 Primetime Emmy Awards, Moonlight Sonata: Deafness in Three Movements tells Taylor’s very personal story about her deaf son, her deaf father, and Ludwig Van Beethoven, as he went deaf while composing his famous sonata. Her other credits include Hear and Now, which won the Audience Award at Sundance in 2007; Beware the Slenderman, which received nominations for an Emmy and two Critics’ Choice Awards; The Final Inch, which was nominated for an Academy award and multiple Emmys; Saving Pelican 895; One Last Hug: Three Days At Grief Camp; Open Your Eyes; and Between Sound and Silence.

Since bursting onto the global music scene at the age of 13, Dion has sold more than 250 million albums during her 40-year career. Having earned five Grammy Awards, two Academy Awards, the 2016 Billboard Music Award lifetime achievement Icon Award, and recognition from the 2004 World Music Awards as the best-selling female artist of all time, Dion continues to break records. With chart-topping hits featured in blockbuster films including “Ashes” (Deadpool 2), “My Heart Will Go On” (Titanic), and “Beauty and the Beast” (Beauty and the Beast), she is a force in the industry and sets new standards of excellence.

In 2021, Dion faced the difficult decision of canceling her highly anticipated Las Vegas residency due to health concerns. Then, in December 2022, the singer courageously revealed her ongoing battle with Stiff Person Syndrome, ultimately leading to the cancellation of her Courage World Tour. Despite these setbacks, Dion remained dedicated to her craft and persevered, turning her attention to healing. In 2023, she showcased her talents by acting in the romantic comedy film Love Again and released five new songs on the accompanying movie soundtrack.

The documentary was produced by Irene Taylor, Stacy Lorts, and Julie Begey Seureau for Vermilion Films and Tom Mackay for Sony Music Vision. Dave Platel and Denis Savage serve as executive producers for Les Productions Feeling alongside Shane Carter for Sony Music Entertainment Canada and Krista Wegener for Sony Music Vision. The sale was negotiated by Sony Music Vision.

This is exactly what I was trying to tell my friend last night. It's like Celine does what she can and gives us an inch and people expect a mile. She has a eventually fatal condition that is not gonna just go away because we want her back. I admire and understand that she wants to come back but that doesn't mean it's gonna happen. Celine can't control how her body reacts to the illness even if she wants to come back with every fiber of her being. People need to calm down and be real about what they expect to happen. It's no about faith in Celine at all! I love her with all my heart. It's about being reasonable about the sevarity of the illness. it's a malfunction in her brain and she has NO SAY in what she can and can't do. I have Cerebral Palsy which is simular in some ways. No matter how much I want my muscles to relax, I can't just make it happen. I would love to be able to walk, but because of my illness, it just is not going to happen. My back has been locked up for days and even with pain meds and muscle relaxers I can not even lean forward to reach for something. I just have to let my caregivers help and admit I can't do it. So I can relate to having muscles you can't control even after treatment.

I am sorry to hear about your CP. I can imagine how difficult it is. I know people who struggle with it, but to really understand the whole difficulty, I would have to switch places with them...

However, the pathogenesis of SPS, as far as we know it, is different from that of CP. In this case, there is no brain damage (at least initially), but an error in the cloning of T lymphocytes, resulting in the production of abnormal antibodies, followed by severely disturbed neurotransmitter metabolism (excess excitation with deficient inhibition). Such a mechanism provides some opportunities for more effective treatment: in addition to symptomatic treatment (benzodiazepines and muscle relaxants, such as baclofen), immunological treatment is used, trying to cleanse the blood of defective antibodies from time to time (administration of immunoglobulins - IVIG or plasma centrifugation - plasmapheresis). One can also try to reset and then restart the diseased autoimmune system with HSCT (hematopoietic stem cell autologous transplantation), which has brought some SPS patients into complete clinical remission.

In Céline's case, therefore, hope for improvement in her condition must be cautious, but fortunately it is real. The question is whether the improvement, even if it occurred/occurs, will be enough for her to continue to sing professionally on stage... This is something no one knows for sure yet.

What I don't understand is why they didn't release the release date, I think it's strange, if nothing is released during the Grammys I'll find it even stranger.
