Does anyone know why Celine didn't take Rene's last name when they got married? If she wanted to keep using her own last name as her stage name she could have still taken his last name legally. I would love to know more about this.

Because in Quebec, she couldn't have taken his last name legally.

"In Quebec, all women have been keeping their maiden names since 1981, whether they want to or not. Provincial law in Quebec forbids a woman from taking her husband’s surname after marriage. The rule was instated soon after the creation of the Quebec Charter of Rights, which went into effect in 1976, and is intended to extend the charter’s statement on gender equality to names."

That's not a "document". That's a love letter. Hence the name.

The "actual papers" were an insert in one of those pockets in For Keeps, along with a wedding invite, RC's ultrasound, etc, etc.

"Mr & Mrs X" is just common parlance.

Court filings, company flings where she's a director (with both US and Canadian authorities), her passport - i.e. legal documents - are all under the name Dion.

And speaking of her name, for those in Quebec, Hughes Aufray is on tour there at the moment. He's playing Montreal on Saturday. I'm sure he's going to play Celine's

. :) (Wonder if Maman Dion is gonna go!)

Apparently he also reached out to Celine a while back, in the hopes of doing a duet, but never heard back - https://www.journald...n-lie-au-quebec

Come on, Celine! The man is nearly 90! Make this happen before it's too late - you'll always regret it otherwise.

She only has Canadian citizenship she didn’t become duel. Shes only Canada she has a american work visa so she can work in the states plus it was a love letter but she signed it using her married name. Thats not a thing in Quebec were u dont take your husbands last name she uses her name for public things because shes a celebrity. My cousin is from Montreal and his wife uses her married last name.

Huh?

Who said anything about dual citizenship??

You'll note all legal documents are in the name 'Dion':

Court documents (in Nevada probate court, re. administration of Rene's will, where Celine is the petitioner)

Company filings for companies where she holds directorships:

- In Canada (filed with Government of Canada) for Feeling Productions

- In US (filed with Nevada Secretary of State) for CDA Productions and for Feeling Productions

These are all legal documents, filed with the respective regulatory bodies, under one's legal name.

And regarding that picture, like I said, "Mr & Mrs X" is common parlance. Captioning a picture as such (or signing a love letter) does not a legal name make.

Then there's that Australian visa in her passport.

Oh, and it definitely IS "a thing in Quebec".

Of course it behooves her to keep 'Dion' as her stage name, but that doesn't change the law.

See the Civil Code of Quebec, Article 393:

"In marriage, both spouses retain their respective names and exercise their civil rights under those names."

Not to mention plentiful press coverage:

Hey Quebec, it's 2017, let me choose my name

"In most of the country if a woman even decides to bother getting married, it's up to her to choose if she wants to keep her family name, take her partner's name, or opt for a hyphenated version. But in Quebec, it doesn't work that way. In 1981 the province passed a law that prevents women from taking their partner's surname. It's a law that, at the time, was seen as progressive."

Quebec's 'married name' law is paternalistic and dumb

"The province has made it illegal for a woman to take her husband's name — or vice versa, for that matter. [...] Canada’s “first couple” is actually doing is giving Quebec’s Civil Code the middle finger — and good on them for it. Since 1981, it has been illegal for women in Quebec to change their surname when they marry. Since Trudeau and Grégoire married in 2005 in Montreal, she has had no right to share names with her husband — or their children, for that matter."

Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau’s surname sparks a dash of controversy in Quebec

"The Prime Minister's Office has let it be known that Sophie Grégoire prefers to be referred to as Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau, marking the first time a prime ministerial spouse has opted for a hyphenated surname.[...] the choice happens to put Ms. Grégoire-Trudeau at odds with the couple's home province of Quebec, where adopting your husband's name is neither customary nor legal. Under Quebec's Civil Code, women are not allowed to formally change their name at marriage and they can't tether their husband's names to their own either. "In marriage, both spouses retain their respective names, and exercise their respective civil rights under those names," the law states."

Re above, apparently a direct case link to court filings is not possible (probably because of Captcha), so you'd have to go here: https://www.clarkcou...rch.aspx?ID=200

Search Family Records, select by "Party" in dropdown, and search either under Rene's or Celine's name. You'll see probate case P-16-088057-E pop up.

The visa picture referred to above:

It's not marital status, but number of entries. It's a single-entry visa.
