From The New Yorker! Another good read.

Sad I'm not currently in NYC and won't be able to see the US premiere in New York this week, but soon. Glad to see it's getting much ink in the Anglo press, even if the reception still appears to be one of general confusion.

have you seen the movie yet?

New York Times - finally, a thorough English write-up from someone who understands both Valérie and Celine (Elisabeth Vincentelli).

Another one, this time an extended interview with Valérie in Vulture / NY Mag.

BTW, the journalist in question below is Julie Snyder. That’s why Valérie felt cheated and withdrew from her participation in Julie’s show. That we already knew from French press, but what’s new here is that Valérie says she got some advice from one of Celine’s brothers during production. Wonder who.

“I heard two of Céline’s siblings thought the film was disrespectful because it painted her as growing up in squalor. What’s your reaction to that?

It’s difficult to say. We proposed to the Quebec distributor to have the family see the movie — all of her brothers and sisters. And they didn’t want to. Then one journalist let them enter a press screening under another name, and they left before the movie ended. Of course, they didn’t recognize Céline in the film. Because not everything is true. I think it’s very difficult when you’re so close. Aline’s house is not exactly the same as Céline’s. I know she didn’t leave her house through a window wearing her wedding dress.

I never wanted to be unkind. I spent all my energy to make her onscreen family a good family with love. I did get some advice while I was making the film from one of Céline’s other siblings, but he didn’t speak publicly, so I can’t say his name. René’s family loves the movie.”

Well she spoke to not only Valerie, but Denise Bombardier and Sylvain Marcel, and others, I’m sure, so do hope there’s a follow up piece. Definitely my favorite Aline write-up thus far. Wish I could be back in NYC today to see it.

BTW, Celine still hasn’t seen it (or at least that’s the official line…)

Haven’t posted here in ages. Decided to watch Aline today. Didn’t want my very first screening to be in English next week.

My main critique is, it’s inconsistent. They should have either stuck with the fictional storyline or the true one. Besides the incorrect timeline I felt like the portrayal was rather accurate - until I saw the ending. Really??

By the way, I wonder if the French songs will be English-dubbed in the English version. I wonder how they will adapt Tellement j’ai d’amour pour toi

part of me feels she definitely snuck a look while RC was watching it, or at least borrowed it after :giggle: or she just said "RC ask the french lady for the DVD for mommy"

I don’t think they will dubbed it in english since there’s English subtitles. It will ruin the entire movie if they dubbed everything in english

My fave write-up so far. Glad to learn that Rene's side of the family liked the film. And the mystery Dion brother. And interesting to read about the song selection i.e. why TPOL and IACBTM didn't make the cut.

She answers about The Power of Love, but about IACBTMN I think that the main reason why it's not in the movie is that in France it is not the big song it is in North America.

People hardly know it here. She sang it on TV only once, back in 1996 and in concert it wasn't part of any french setlist until 2013, when she did the lipped medley in the SA mini tour (and again for the 2016 Summer tour).

Well, of course Nature Boy is not a hit either, but you got the point !

I wish Valerie had a Twitter or Instagram to tag her when talking about the movie!

Also, was "Je Sais Pas" in the movie? I have forgotten already

We all hold some power and can rate this movie highly on Rotten Tomatoes, Google, IMDB, etc.

As a huge Celine fan, I find myself wanting the film to succeed. My friends are all messaging me about it.

There's only one theater in my area showing it beginning April 7th, in Washington DC. I'm too curious to not go, I'm curious about the movie and to see how many people go see it.

Let's download Spotify and listen to the Celine Dion Top Tracks playlist

Let's listen on spotify, only 30s already counts, let's give this strength to our queen, let's make her come back.

It's a shame that she removed the scene where she portrays Aline as a six month old, with one tooth, sleeping in a drawer. I would've loved that!! :-D I imagine it would get a laugh out loud moment from the audience, and perhaps it would've further cemented the tone of the film? From what I'm reading, it sounds like she had to water down her original vision a little bit.. where she didn't lean into the camp enough.

I'm excited to see it tonight!

So to answer someone’s earlier question, definitely not just NY.

I’d actually love to go see it in Vegas! But alas, not there now.
