Céline themed movies: "Aline/The Voice Of Love" and "Celine before Celine"

Well, there's Ziggy, but the English version so not his lyrics. I don't recall if here's anything else.

Noting though that publishing licenses are compulsory (i.e. anyone can record a song so long as they pay the requisite royalties to the songwriter; the songwriter can't prevent someone from recording their work). BUT, sync often requires songwriter or recording artist approval (meaning you can record a song, but if you want to use it in a movie, commercial, etc, you need to get sign-off).

Luc Plamondon is very protective of his work, so maybe that. Ziggy is far better when Celine sings it in french... very good song. great message.
Plus qu'ailleurs , but now Si c'était à refaire , i still love tant de temps....

I know! Which is why I cringe at the use of the English version. Why mess with a good thing?

maybe he did not want the song in the movie...Starmania is awsome, still good. Don't think the memory of this movie will live that long.

Starmania, Notre Dame de Paris, Cirque and Céline are the reasons I wanted to move to Montreal for college when I was a high-schooler in Ontario! (And I did, and loved it. 😊)

I wonder if RC ever did see this Movie about his MOM yet

Valérie Lemercier said in an interview (can't remember which one) that RC and some other family members asked to see it and that she sent them a copy so RC might have seen it.

Posted (edited)

Watched it yesterday through Canal+, there are some positive and some very negative feelings about the movie: Spoilers alert!!!

The negative:

The Frankenstein young Celine with a face of an old woman that has been de-wrinkled through photoshop, this image will haunt me till the day I die.

Ziggy: she turned a song about being in love with a gay man to a song about in love with Rene or at least that's what I got from the performance.

The lack of chronology: The movie does not know where to start and where to end and does not know on which leg to dance on. If the actress was a real fan of Celine, she would have known that if Celine sang Pour que tu m'aimes encore before an interview, then Celine is already married to Rene and she is not keeping any secret because the cat was out of the bag 2 years prior releasing that song in question so Celine doing an interview after singing that song, crying because she cannot reveal the name of her lover is incorrect.

They skimmed over Rene's health issues with cancer, you did not see Rene smoking a cigar, when it's ultimately the cigar that caused him throat cancer and ultimately caused his demise when it came back.

The incident where Celine lost her voice is laughable: she was singing All by myself to that audience, then she felt her voice cracking so she ran for Rene backstage (lol), when she comes back, the audience are singing to her Pour que tu m'aimes encore (?!). Wouldn't they want to sing ABM instead to help her finish the song.

The proposal: lol where to begin: never happened, she licked the ice cream and got the ring in her mouth lol. Talk about a parody or a really cheesy comedic timing.

The hand gesture while singing: lol, parody again trying hard

The twins: Rene was never surprised that she got pregnant again. He was with Celine the whole time she was trying to get pregnant so him acting surprised when the nurse gave him the news does not make sense.

The good part: Valerie Lemercier did not sound as bad as I thought she would. The highlight of the whole movie is her singing which did not totally suck which was pretty surprising to me.

Ziggy: I did not know of the existence of an English version, I had to youtube it and was pleasantly surprise it existed. Yet, it still does not compare to the French version though

Seems you completely missed the point…

Yes, Valérie knows when Céline sang PQTME (in fact she specifically called out this example as something she intentionally changed for dramatic effect). Yes, she made up the proposal for the same reasons (and again, was intentional about it and talked about why on numerous occasions). Just two examples. Why do you think she named the film Aline?

I don’t know why the idea is creative license and dramatic storytelling is so difficult for people to grasp… 🤦‍♀️

She is taking her life, her songs, and twisting them to make a quick buck. Yeah it's "Aline" but all the songs she sang are "Celine" songs, those are left unchanged, so you cannot really turn a blind eye on Celine's life and say she is doing something completely original. If she created new songs that Celine never sang, maybe but she would never be able to do so given that the whole movie looks like B-side parody of Celine's life and she wouldn't have the money or resources to pay writers to create new songs.

Valerie knows very well the fame Celine has in France, which is the core audience of the movie, and was going to name her movie Celine if she was able to avoid a lawsuit from Celine's team.

So, calling your movie Aline instead of Celine and yet keeping all the songs that Celine sang and is known for, even going through her biography books to get insights on her life history and re-enacting them in a parodical way, does not give you the liberty to do a movie that feels like the director procrastinated on churning up the ideas and threw the whole script of the movie in a day.

I disagree. To people who aren’t die hard fans, assuming you are, they’re not going to have all the issues you have about the movie, minus the Valerie playing a kid.

Loll some people…

The movie is a delight! Again it’s a “movie” not a documentary! It’s actually brilliant. Most of the movie are behind the scenes of what was never caught on camera. Valerie captured on screen what we could only have imagined, but better.

Which is what i love the most about the movie. Its also a 2 hours movie that starts from 18 yrs old Adhemar Dion and Therese Tanguay all the way to Celine Dion at 45 yrs old… Of course it can’t be all the exacts scenes.

I watched it for the 5th time tonight. Its really a beautiful love story. Made me cry like a baby the first time i watched it. I couldn’t help myself in theater, I was a mess.

I love its weirdness (one very weird thing is Valerie playing Celine at all ages even as a baby 😅)… But Celine is a bit weird too at times, sometimes she makes us cringe, sometimes she makes us laugh, sometimes she makes us cry, sometimes she makes us fall in love…. All those feelings are in that movie.

Bravo Valérie! What a gift to Celine and her fans! I hope she liked it.

I enjoyed the movie, and as you say - not a documentary, more of a tribute.

For me the highlights were her telling RC to write "stairs" and say they go to the same place. And the end where she sings Ordinaire - and you realize that Celine is not just a person but a commodity. And that her career has more yesterdays than tomorrows now and we should enjoy every moment she's on stage.

is ther a Luc Plamondon song in the movie? don't remember.. Maybe he didn't want it. Just speculation on my part. Since he wrote the lyrics, does he have the right to do it.

Ziggy is in it

"People pay 20-25 dollars to see you."

- Céline Dion, 1990

They will need someone to do the same moves as Celine on stage, it will be difficult, but one day I hope that a big studio makes a movie about Celine.

Watching Elvis and I was surprised how much the actor did Elvis' moves, it looked like the same person.

Aline is the “Movie of the week” in Canada on iTunes. It’s available to rent for $0.99. It’s currently #12 on the iTunes chart. :)

It has a little banner on the front page.

Well, Aline is getting its first Quebec TV network broadcast next week. I wonder if TVA is intentionally timing it to coincide with some kind of Céline-related (Vegas?) announcement.

Maybe. It makes sense.

I hope it gets a good reception on TVA.

My boyfriend is from Quebec. We started watching the movie and stopped almost half way because he thought it was terrible. Valerie’s accent really annoyed him lol

I watched the rest of the movie by myself. I enjoyed it!

So apparently Woody Allen is in Paris making his new film and it stars one… Valérie Lemercier. Guess Aline opened doors for her in the Anglo - and for that matter global - market.

Yep, now confirmed by Variety. https://variety.com/2022/film/global/woody-allen-paris-film-valerie-lemercier-niels-schneider-1235378132/

She use to be the “actress from Les Visiteurs”, now she’s “the actress from Aline”.

“Lemercier is a popular French actor-director whose latest film “Aline,” a movie about Celine Dion, world premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and earned her a best actor prize at the Cesar Awards.”

Working with Woody Allen… how esteemed and illustrious. Glad to see people in the film industry continue to have the moral compass of a rock.

Well, seems there’s something “special” about France in that respect. (See: Polanski). Probably why Woody had to resort to working there, seeing as he’s toxic elsewhere.

Yes you're quite right, in France there's the sentence : separate the piece of work from the man/girl who creates it. The Polanski case is still a debate in here with people who want to boycott this man (rightly in my personal opinion), and people who say that his piece of art doesn't have to suffer from his reputation and what he's done in the past , that you can enjoy a movie/song/painting without encensing the creator. We had quite a scene about it during the Cesar in 2020, when French actress Adele Haenel left the ceremony after Polanski's movie won an award :

Also a lot of people think that it's not citizens'role to judge someone on personal feeling, that it is Justice's part. Still a really touchy debate in here. And yes, in France, Woody Allen is still seeing as a great cineast, very respected as if the rest didn't exist...
