I think you need to read the article. I didn't say Celine herself had been cast or that she was directing. I said Celine (as in the role) already has an actress, the actress playing Celine is also the same person directing the movie.

 

"The film will be directed by Valerie Lemercier, who will also star as Dion."

 

Looks like it's already getting interest. Let's hope it lives up, especially since Celine gave her approval.

Casting has been known since Dec 2017. Today's Variety exclusive was the first English-language confirmation of the producers, distributors, timing, etc.

 

Please go back in the thread...all this has been addressed.

I'm optimistic. Everything in that Variety piece is rather encouraging and it seems Valerie Lemercier is well-respected as both actor and director.

 

And Gaumont is not a bad shop to head this up.

What they mean is that Celine(the character) has already been cast, not celine herself

Well I don't know about the actors, the accent etc... I just hope it gets done, and that it's great. Celine's story is epic. She is a true role model and her story has all the ingredients of a great movie. Drama, romance, adventure and its a beautiful fairy tale. , all in one.

Valérie Lemercier is very known in France, her movie will be inspired by the life of Celine Dion, that’s not a real biopic, just has Lemercier did 20years again with the movie « Palais Royal » which was inspired of Lady Diana. Lermercier is a very special actress with a very personal sense of humor, really absurd sometimes.

I saw her on tv last month and she talked about the movie, the character inspired of Celine is named Adeline Dieu.

She explained that she adores Celine Dion and she admires her destiny and she will not laugh at Celine in the movie but it will be a kind of tribute to Celine. Let’s see

a biopic is too early. already the 2008 movie was horrible. oh well. they are bombarding us with lots of celine stuff, but none of it is what we want, which is an english album followed by a french one...

I hope that since the English press showing this interest, that the movie will be released internationally and won't only be for the French market. I was NOT at all excited by the movie before since it would probably only be in French. But now there is hope for at least subtitles.

With a sizeable budget and with the likes of Variety & Deadline & other industry press writing about it at such early stage, I'm sure the aim here is international distribution.

 

I hope - with it being mostly in French - it'll spark some renewed interest in her French catalogue among the non-francophone audience and maybe they'll finally make her French albums available for streaming in the US!

 

It's also really cool to see how broad and positive the reaction to this news has been, including in a lot of "millennial-friendly" press like Pitchfork, Stereogum, Vulture... people are excited!

 

Given that Celine has OK'd it and granted rights to the songs, I'm sure she must have seen the script or at least a treatment, and must be comfortable with the overall approach (even if this initially seemed to be a comedy / satire, from Lemercier's most recent comments, it really seems to be more of a "celebration").

Gaumont will launch the sales/marketing at next Berlin festival if I understood correctly.

 

With Celine worldwide appeal, souds logical, especially due to the budget (23 million is huge for a French movie, even more for a biopic).

Yep, it's everywhere. She's a hot commodity! Even the most unlikely press is picking it up.

 

Interestingly, at the time we were told Jérôme Commandeu was cast as Rene (and he can sure do the voice, as he did in this interview!)

But then yesterday, Deadline reported it's Sylvain Marcel (although Deadline also said it's in English, so I'm suspicious of their info - though they're usually my go-to for industry news!)

 

Here's Valerie Lemercier on Europe 1 talking about it a year ago, but I think the project may have evolved quite a bit since then, especially since Celine OK'd it and authorized use of her songs.

I think you're mis-interpreting.

What the producers said is it's in the same vein of ‘Rocket Man’ and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ and many media outlets noted there's a biopic frenzy going on now following the success of Bohemian Rhapsody.

It's not a major studio production, so P&A budget (and production budget) will be nowhere near what Fox did for Bo Rhap. (Unless a major steps in now that it's made such a splash to co-produce and distribute globally, which might happen, but ATM they're aiming for independent local distributors.)

 

I think the English press is making this out to be bigger than it actually is. Yes, $23m is a big budget for a French indie (well Gaumont is a mini-major, but local nonetheless); it's on the low end from a major studio perspective. Still, the English media is really playing it up.

 

But yeah, I think the concept shifted a bit since we first heard about it - or at least so it seems, based simply on some of the French press then vs English press now.

This biopic will be done in French and it will be called Famous (yes, an English title for the French movie). And they will translate the biopic and it will be called The Power of Love for the English version. Would make more sense to keep the same name EVERYWHERE!
