Céline Dion Live 2018 (tour) - Official Topic

I know it's nothing but wishful thinking from us connecting some very scattered dots, but from a purely business perspective, it really would make all the sense in the world for Netflix to do something here.

 

Celine is globally appealing (which is rare), and that's an important aspect of Netflix' international expansion strategy - exclusive, global rights, and ideally to content that appeals across borders. Celine is certainly that. Plus, there's an entire new audience curious about her thanks to the fashion press - people who wouldn't fork over the big $$$ for a Celine show, but are happy to invest 1.5hr to passively watch something on Netflix at no incremental cost.

 

Plus, Netflix has shown that musical & live content is something they are more focused on lately. For instance, they are releasing Springsteen's Broadway show on the night it closes its live run, and are also reportedly bidding for the rights to the live taping of Hamilton from 2016.

 

So yeah, I totally see them doing something here. Exclusive, live, globally-appealing content.

Mind you, I'd much rather see a behind-the-scenes / biography-type doc (like Amy or Gaga's "Five Foot Two") rather than an overly-edited snoozefest of a concert video (like the Babs thing they released several months ago).

I suspect it'll be the latter though, and it would be a shame if they only covered the 2018 tour, as I firmly believe the 2016 and 2017 editions were so much better. But oh well, I'll take what I can get!

 

Anyway, at this stage, it's all just wishful thinking on our part anyway!

I watched this video of her concert, and as usual Celine surprises me. I am amazed at how great she is both when she is and isn't singing. We all know that she is the most talented singer, but to me she is more than that. I mean how cute is her reaction when she sees the couple dancing during Je t'aime encore? I loved when she said' this is what the song is all about, so please keep on dancing, you are an inspiration.'Her Ryan Reynolds speech got funnier and funnier as the tour went on. At one point she actually laughs at herself. I personally find it very touching how she acknowledges and talks to and about Rene. These days its so rare to find an enduring love like that. Her final speech is the cherry on the cake. It is great! The tour is over and I will miss it. Celine always gives so much of herself both as a singer and especially as a human being. That is one special lady!

I actually have mixed feelings: On one hand, I won't miss this tour as much as the two previous one since it brought absolutely nothing new. On the other hand, it's always refreshing to see how happy and excited she is every time she is on tour, I'll surely miss seeing her that happy!

Just thought of something now that we've hade two tours last couple of years. Is it just me or is Celine's backing music or orchestra just so boring.

Thinking of how the music is arranged. They do the job but they don't add anything. At least for me. I've seen, on television, artists that I don't even remotely like Justin Bieber, Beyonce, Katy Perry and so on. And I can get stuck listening to the song cause the music arrangement is good, it adds something to the show. Even if I don't like or even hate the song. Yes with Celine it's about the voice but still I think it goes hand in hand. Good background music makes Celine sound even better also.

I think the better arrangements have been when she have done guest appearances and her own crew has stayed home.

One song with great new arrangement is I'm alive. Now there is some "go" in the song compared to later years.

Though I agree when Céline makes use of another band/orchestra, the changes are more radical.

 

BUT....remember Scott (before he worked for Céline) did some amazing stuff to her songs during Sur Les Plaines in 2008..

No it's not the quality of the sound I mean. Sure it sounds quite bad when recording with a mobile or similar device.

But for example IACBTN how much different does it sound now compared to say '98......Not that much to me. Yes maybe some subtle changes here and there.

I think someone like David Foster would do a great job re-new many of her songs live. Just listened to TPOL from David Foster gala and that sounded much better.

Anyway I think there is much more to potential especially since they've added some instruments to the orchestra/band.

Or take that Queebec anniversary, I think that orchestra sounded much better than Celine's band.

Yeah agree. Also it doesn't has to sound close to the studio in anyway. But if it's a song like up tempo or with "drive", that I think is important to get when then playing it live. Like I'm alive have now. Haven't really been able to pinpoint what's missing but when you say it, more drums had been great!

I agree with ashes especially the 2nd chorus where in the studio it sounds powerful because of cinematic bass while in the live version it lacks that powerful cinematic bass

Here, in my own arrangement the drums are more prominent. The original arrangement works best for me. But this is where i came up with after carefully listening to the song;

With all my due respect ... but NOONE can sing this gorgeous piece of music like Céline. Ariana sure has a great voice, but she's too young to sing something like that. You need deep soul experiences of life and love to sing this. - Sorry.

IMO I whish, you hadn't made it at all cause this song's like a "Holy Grail" to me. I loved the music since the first time I saw "Once upon a time in America" in the cinema in 1984. There are so many masterpieces which Ennio Morricone wrote, but this one - for me - is the best he wrote. Although he wrote it for another movie in the first place, it fit perfectly to the epic crime movie of Sergio Leone and the fateful love of Noodles (played by Robert De Niro) and Deborah (played by the young Elizabeth McGovern, who became "Countess of Grantham"@ Downton Abbey many, many years later). The piece perfectly resembles longing, deep feelings and a fateful love that only can be lived with all it's consequences.

As Céline recorded it in 2007 - the first time that this piece had been combined with a singing voice, as far as I know - Quincey Jones and herself could catch this deeper meaning of that piece of music in such a perfect, even heavenly way, that nothing more can be said, or sung. @ my topic you can find the making of (#308):

Well, for Barbara Hendricks this was a crossover, as she is (resp. was, as she's meanwhile 70 years old and not performing anymore) a lyric soprano. Such a pitty that she messed up the beginning - and this strange conductor left her alone. But eventually it sounds beautiful. Thank you.
