I totally disagree.

 

While I think that musically, Celine's covers are mostly pointless ( meaning not a lot of arrangement change) and only stand out by her voice, Celine's version of "tu nages" has 1 major change to me compared to the original : they replaced the piano by a synthesizer.

 

This brings a mysterious, dark, misty atmosphere that fits right with the lyrics ( as a reminder : this is about coma or people who don't react).

 

respectfully disagree. it does not have the emotional depth and connection as the original. i still enjoy hearing celine interpret any song, but this time anggun wins. piano is very right for the song. but either way very well-written song about an aloof and disconnected lover

I think she might keep a sly watchful eye. She responded quite quickly to that hockey jersey controversy and the Pepe-gate....whatever that was about, I forget by now.

 

She might when it comes to Quebec media. Her team is mostly all there so they have their ear to the ground and Rene always kept tabs on Journal de Montreal, and other quebecois media.

But I don't think she really knows much beyond the QC bubble, and that's a shame. There have been so many opportunities for her (or even just Team Celine) to interact and engage, and they just never seam to - except perhaps the occasional random talent show contestant in the US.

Instead they repost 20-year old clips as if she were dead, as has been pointed out in other threads recently. Her social media walks and talks like an estate, not a living, active artist. And what a waste of a platform that is.

True, she could have gone viral many times with her responses and interactions. It sucks for her fans who want to see more of her, but the one plus side is that it makes her into more and more of this untouchable icon status who is just too famous and busy for anything. Therefore making her limited interactions more noticed and noteworthy

OK so to preface, this post's rightful place in this particular thread depends on whether you consider poetry "cool" (I do).

 

Anyway, a couple weeks ago we had not one but 2 Celine tribute albums (from Guylaine Tanguay and Ranee Lee), and now a millennial Ilnu Quebecois poet Marie-Andrée Gill (https://en.wikipedia...ie-Andrée_Gill) has created a suite of Celine-inspired poems.

 

From what I understand it, she took Celine's autobiography, and "rearranged" it, in poems, such that her version of Celine doesn't leave Charlemagne for Las Vegas, but rather leaves the big city with Rene and goes into the woods!

Some people point out, correctly, that is a term that fans invented and used to group them together. But if you want to use that argument, the same is true for Whitney's title as "The Voice"....that was just a phrase Oprah coined.

 

Usually people try to exclude Celine from being in their company and say she is the one who should be repacled. Which I find very ignorant.

Well, I think it’s not so much a sonic inspiration as much as a psychological one. It’s more about not taking myself so seriously and not feeling so trapped by the indie-rock world of cool, which can feel very suffocating. Especially trying to navigate your personality on the internet, which is so talked about to the point of being boring as hell, but you’re trying to literally package your personality into a version of yourself. I definitely lean more toward irreverent humor and sarcasm because I don’t really know how else to do it. And I don’t think that is a superior way to just being super earnest. It’s just a weird thing to navigate and I feel like I’m embarrassed at myself every ten minutes at the moment.

 

I think Celine is less in the sonic texture of the record and more about having fun and embracing how much I love singing and melody, even in the orchestral moments, and having chimes on the record. Things that maybe in the past I’d be like, “but is it cool?” It just helped me to open up just a little bit and have fun with the process. She’s more of a spiritual guide, not really influencing the production of it.

 

And Celine Dion is really… I feel like it’s a bit of a personality test for me now. If someone is s***-talking Celine Dion, I’m like, “What do you find joy in?” I’m not saying everyone has to like Celine Dion, but it’s so easy to not take that kind of artist seriously. But they are so beloved and they obviously are doing something that really connects with people, and that is so valuable.

 

I don’t know, it was kind of a beautiful little thread during the recording process as well, because half the crew in the studio were French-Canadian, so they were more familiar with her French music. Laurie, who plays drums, is a big Celine fan and she was showing me her early French songs, and when we had finished tracking, we went to [Celine Dion’s] deli. It was just a nice, positive thing, especially while making an emotional indie-rock record."
