Celine Dion to perform Hymne a l'Amour at AMAs

btw maybe i am a noob but I searched for Edith Piaf's version and listened to it; I did not like Edith's vibrato and it was also sung so fast. In Celine's version I really felt the emotion and it sounded beautifully orchestrated while Edith's version... well it did not move me at all.

It´s so funny how even the fans have said so many negative things about the performance when it was all about emotion and not perfect voice technique. I haven´t seen anyone in the internet saying bad things about Lopez, Gwen, Bieber performances. WHY?
Posted (edited)

I heard a guy on the radio talking about the AMA and he played a clip of JLO singing and said "She has never sounded better" :D

She wasn't singing live!!! Hello!! :giggle:

At least he also played the end of L'hymne à l'amour and said it was a great performance and they couldn't have picked anyone better than Céline!

when people says I'm a musician or the best I'm an opera singer, i know what i'm talking about....just funny :giggle: She gave it her all, she got my respect even more. :)

you shouln't put your Foufounes on display like that B)

Well I don't call myself a musician by any means, but I've spent many years working in a recording studio as a junior writer for a production company, so I do pride myself in having "perfect pitch". The second I heard her, I knew she was off-key and was wondering if it was an ear monitor issue. But she didn't display any signs like she normally would and then second line she was flat and my ears were like, "Oh my word, can this be real? Celine? Off-key and flat?!" We'll never know if it's an ear-monitor issue, (I don't think so) but it's not that big of a deal for. It is definitely surprising and I think that's why so many people are shocked and discussing it because Celine rarely is ever this off. She was off-key throughout the rest of the song even though many here will not agree, but it's just not as obvious as the beginning. From listening, she was just a fourth under the key the orchestra was in.

I think some fans feel strongly it's to defend Celine. I do not because her career doesn't need it. I simply think it's just a big shock for many people, fans and even non fans to immediately hear the always technically flawless singer have a flawed moment.

Regardless of facts and technical issues, I still thing it's an amazing performance but at the same time I believe it's okay for people to comment and discuss it because it happened. It's not fair for some people here to just say "Enough! Stop discussing the key issue, her going flat, pitch issues, flubbed notes, hoarseness, etc" because everyone is allowed to voice what they heard, good or bad. Doesn't make one any less of a fan than the other. But the world will get over it and I'm sure she already has because the message came across and it was poignant!

To mention she was hoarse or had an off night but still gave a very emotional performance is one thing, but the vast majority of negative comments on youtube and Twitter came from anti-Celine stans looking for any opportunity to bring her down.

comments on youtube videos saying i'm a musician or opera singer...where someone wants to give himself credibility, i'm not always believing them, too many opera singer for my taste. But you have a right to find her flat and what else. No need to say you are a musician, it was perfectly clear for a lot of people, some were able to appreciate her performance even then, and for those for who it was an insurmontable problem, i never said they were bad fans. MOST OF US AGREE THAT HER PERFORMANCE WAS NOT PERFECT BUT YOUR ARGUMENTS SEEM TO BE WRONG.

1. "Celine has not lost any credibility? Only in my eyes and not to the public at large?"

The truth is: The public at large out of this fandom praise her. 90% of comments on social media, such as Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Tumblr, etc. praise her, while only 10% are negative. I was browsing through thousands of tweets and hundreds of facebook news pages, etc. during her performance and found that "most of them" absolutely complimented her.

2. "Apparently you haven't paid any attention to the reception of the performance outside this fan forum."

The truth is: Apparently it's you who haven't paid attention enough to the reception of the performance outside this fan forum. Apart from the social media as mentioned in No 1, on her performance video on Youtube with more than 2 million views, it's showing (now) that:

LIKES: 11,685 VS DISLIKES: 517 = 95.7% LIKES

You see clearly? More than 10 thousand accounts of general public like her performance while only 5 hundreds don't like. It's doesn't mean the majority didn't see any flaws, but something in her performance won their hearts.

3. "International media have covered her flat singing also."

The truth is: 100% of international media I have read so far, especially the reputable and popular ones, have NOT covered her flat singing at at all. Instead, they praised her performance, using the words quoted "emotional", "powerful", "gorgeous", "moving", "stirring", "soulful", "beaucoup touché" (really touched) etc., such as Billboard (US), Rolling Stone (US), MTV (US), ABC News (US), USA Today (US), ETonline (US), Daily Mail (UK) [put her on Cover Page], Huffington Post (UK), The Guardian (UK), Mirror (UK), Gala (France), Le Figaro (France), Metronews (France), Le Point (France) and many more.

So far, I have NOT seen any international media that "have covered her flat singing" as you said at all, to be very honest. But I might miss some.

4. "This performance did not add to her image as the prime singer of her generation."

Who cares? We did not expect at all that her one performance at AMA on 22th November 2015 would "add image to her as the prime singer of her generation" LoL. We were just glad that she would perform on a big music awards ceremony for the first time in many years and gain some recognition from youngsters. Most importantly, "Celine Dion" doesn't need to prove anything anymore.

5. "if you wanna support Celine blindly and cannot stand any critique on her performing, please don't bother to do any research on the performance by checking negative comments.

It seems that we have researched much more than you do. So please don't bother to do any research on the performance by checking positive comments. You will see way much more than negative ones. And we are not blind, and it's not that we cannot stand any critique. We see both sides. We just exchange different opinions. If you view on one side, why others cannot view on the other side?

Judging a music performance has no international standards. You have a right to see it as a bad performance, while many others, even outside this fandom, see it as a good, or even excellent performance. No one is right or wrong. And we should not call those who see a good performance and disagree with you as "support Celine blindly."

You hit the nail right on the head!!!

I never said you did nor referenced anyone specific. It's just the negative, bully-like energy that plagues this forum when someone has a difference of opinion, or disagrees with the select people (won't mention names) that always agree with each and back each other like a gang.

it's ok, i totally understand people who think differently...i'm even surprised about myself in this instance, i'm really critical , i'm far to be tone deaf. But listening to it many times, i can assure that in my case , i don't hear the flat notes or crackling, i know there is something different, but i think it adds to the performance. i was at the show in Montreal when she sang l'amour existe encore with a filament of voice, i noticed i can assure you. And it's true that writing about it on the forum, i didn't received a glorious reception. So i know. Now i think that every song with l'amour in the title could present a difficulty, so she should not sing them anymore. :giggle:

Hahaha man but what just came to mind was that L'amour Existe Encore performance in the red dress back in 92-93 with the orchestra. Now that was amazing, emotional, but also technically flawless. She heard and felt it and it was insane. Not to take away from the AMA's performance whatsoever but this one just came to my head. Can anyone upload?

People here are complaining her most perfect unperfect performance ever. She did her job better than anyone else that night on stage

We are fans not haters. And for first time in years the media is in her side

And she sung live...did you know that :) :)

Well, seems you surely put a lot of effort in that. The color and fonts really add to the drama, quite fittingly, I must say.

Very fanatic also, but fitting for a fan forum.

I must say, sincerely, the amount of likes versus dislikes is a very valid argument.

On the other hand I'm not going to repeat the set of contra-arguments I have already summed up earlier.

She failed vocally, this performance could have been much better.

Apparently, however, she remained more than credible as a performer to the majority here.

The performance wasn't perfect, we all know that, but saying it will hurt her image as the prime singer of her generation is ridiculous. You just need to see the demand for her concerts in Paris or Canada, people literally kill to see her live, when there is not even a new album released recently. If there is a singer in the world known for delivering when singing live that's Celine.

thats why they call her for this kind of things. ..grammys oscars ...this performance to me is aside with barbara song at the oscars are her best performances of non celine song

If you see the "substance" in my post, many points I said are the "facts", not even my own opinions but the truth from the general public "outside this fan forum". :)

Thank you. :)

You can criticize her whatever you want. We all have freedom of speech. Many people here even criticize her technically in details, which is useful for our knowledge.

But it's just so funny to see someone making a false or misleading statement about the general public's opinions regarding her performance and called the people who have different opinion that they support Celine blindly, just because they think her performance was good. We all have the right to defend our arguments, whether it's negative or positive. :)

Apparently, however, she remained more than credible as a performer to the majority here.

Yes, I agree with you, and I think not only in this fan forum, but among the general public outside this fan forum too. :)

She sounds godly even from the audience footage

Guys, this video explains everything and basically, in my opinion, ends the discussion about perfect or unperfect performance. For me it becomes obvious, that what we saw on the TV transmission/stream video IS NOT the same as audience heard live.

Once again, it appears that technology is still far, far behind the skills of our Celine :)

Let me put the facts straight: when Céline had her soundcheck in the afternoon, she had problems...she couldn't hear herself. She wasn't satisfied and demanded a 2nd soundcheck. When she went on for her actual performance, she couldn't hear the orchestra and had problems hearing herself.... so she was flat the whole time. Got this from someone who was there..

All in all, I reckon it wasn't that bad. Yes there were some minor voice cracks and sometimes she was off-key, but I've heard a LOT worse. Fact is....these kinds of problems causes the artists to lip-sync for such *big* performances, as with such an event, a LOT can go wrong. And being the perfectionist Céline is.......

Seriously though, I just wish she felt comfortable enough with the performance to post it - on Vevo, FB, Twitter, whatever - and right now it looks like that's not happening which makes me sad; she must be disappointed. But hey, off or not, it gave her more media attention and adulation than anything has for a while. So let's just hope for more like it and that she's not turned off from doing more special things like this.

I don't think it detracted from her reputation at all - most didn't notice it / didn't particularly care, and those who did are generally musically astute enough to acknowledge it was probably a monitor issue. So no biggie. And I think she actually went up a couple notches in many people's minds.

Really? Didn't know that. Oh Celine, why?! I loved that concert. And so many other live performances that are iconic and yet so hard to find on YouTube and elsewhere. Why?!!

Also - one thing I've been wondering about after reading it here in various threads over the past few months. People saying things like "we know she'll never again sound like she did in the 90's" and "still sounds great considering her age" and basically comparing every performance to "90s Celine" as a pinnacle. Why is that? I'm not trying to be daft here, just genuinely want to understand why it's considered as given that she'll "never again sound like that". I mean, I suppose everyone's voice lowers a bit with age, but other than that, why is this supposed vocal decline considered a fait accompli? Other than, I suppose, some change in timbre, I don't hear much difference between present-day Celine ad 90s Celine....So what gives?

(Forgive me if this is a silly question, but I'm an instrumentalist who knows relatively little about vocal technique etc... well, besides once being part of the largest high school choir in North America, but that's besides the point! ;) So any explanation would be much appreciated.)

Not a stupid question as I don't hear much difference either. In fact, I enjoyed her performances from the 2013 mini-tour more than any concert I went to of hers in the 90s. So, I would like to know too.

I do notice a difference between the 90's and the now. It's like a richness, deeper sound to me. I honestly prefer her voice now!

Celine has given plenty of fantastic high-profile performances over the past several years. Her status as an Music Icon is as strong as ever. Also, so many people who grew up with her music are finally getting the chance to see her perform live in Las Vegas these days. And that's how Celine wants to be remembered: as a great live performer/singer. She constantly talks about loving that feeling of singing live for her fans. And that has been more apparent than ever these days in Vegas. The great time she's having interacting with fans in Vegas is so refreshing!

I'm thrilled for her upcoming shows in Paris and Canada! There's so much to look forward to. I think, as the years keep passing, people appreciate Celine more and more for her sustained talent. :) She has proven herself countless times.

Regardless of all the drama us hardcore perfectionist fans have created, the reaction to her touching tribute to Paris has certainly been POSITIVE. It has helped to lift her image as one of the great performers of our time. Now we can simply smile and be very proud of this performance as fans of Celine. And we can look forward to other big appearances like the upcoming one with Michael Buble! :-D
