Vocal coach reacts to Celine’s beautiful 2004 Grammy performance. Plagued with technical difficulties but still the consummate professional.

 

she finally gets the appreciation she deserves. Back then no one said a positive word about this and the way she handled it

In this performance, she sounded great even though there are many tech probs. But dry vocals or no effect at all/raw you will hear more imperfections. Céline needs a sound guy that is ready for every event like in tv interviews (performance), award shows, etc.. so her voice doesn't sound different in every shows. Like ready for the eq, effects. like Mariah.. ahem lol

What I'm saying is that, I just love this raw/imperfect performance, even better than the studio version. Of course, a little reverb would have made it better, but still. I'd rather hear that than an autotune version of it. Whenever I hear Mariah's recent performances, I just keep hearing the constant transitions between autotune, pre-recorded, live and it's annoying af.

 

This performance to me shows the greatness of Celine's voice, despite how stressful she must have felt. And maybe my memories are wrong, but I think she got really praised for this performance back at the time.

She handled it perfectly, and she deserves to get recognized for being so professional about it. Talent aside, she's got excellent manners, which is the best quality to have.

 

Sidenote, I also think she looks so beautiful there. :wub:

The uploader only added the reverb effects (it sounds forced it doesn't softened the voice) the eq for the vocals is still the same.. Raw sound. It's really the sound guy's job to make it sound better. But her performance here even if it's so raw. She sounded amazing! :)

 

But singing raw is hard.. Because you can clearly hear vocal imperfections unlike with an effects like reverb/delays/echoes, set eq, etc. it hides the vocal imperfections and adds resonance as well and it smooths out the belts, you vocals and it's helping the singer as well. That's why I love her LIVE CD A Olympia 1994. :)

 

We can hear this one with Mariah.. most noticeable when doing the belts.. There's a lot of Reverb and delays in belts.. and it really adds Resonance.. That's why Céline loves to do the vocal warm ups in the bathroom. But when live they dried her out (for some performances like this one). Most of Mariah's performances that we see on YouTube are dubbed. So.. of course it will sound perfect while Céline's.. most of her 90's performances are really live and raw (and for some maybe because it's so old it sounded so mono).

 

That's why i hate seeing video comparisons because it's really unfair. Dubbed vs Raw Live.. lol

The sound of the Olympia album is absolutely amazing. It's just perfect. I wish her other live albums had the same resonant sound.

It has been ages since some seconds from a new song stuck in my head that way

and that's the case with PMLALS. If she will have more 3 meaningful tracks like that

as for lyrics and production the album can have for a change huge success

let it be uptempo or other style.

I hope there won't be any duets since they were low quailty imo

and I can't stand all the Arianas of Today, that's horrible waste of track.

They are uploading all the French albums on her official YouTube now...only 2 more albums to go (sans attendre and encore in soir) left..we might be getting a new song here soon if they follow the same pattern as last time...

The Encore un soir album was already added when it came out, so I’m hoping it’s really soon! Just another week or so!
