"Courage" album - Official Topic

So my initial dramatic and scathing impressions of the album where I declared myself heartbroken, majorly disappointed and suicidal have now changed...

I love it I think I was just in a terrible mood, had had a bad week, and it took me by surprise. So I've taken my time - and it's now on repeat, and I now have all the feels, in learn off by heart mode and apologise profusely to Céline and team as this truly is a gift, straight from her. Such a personal album as it's clear it's exactly the album she finally got to make, her way.

For me, right now Look At Us Now is my favourite. I love her deeps and attitude. But my Lord, we have been spoilt with this. No matter its chart positions, its sales, we have this wonderful album forever. Here's to an Era of Courage.

I'm delighted for you. I had similar feelings in the beginning.

Sorry my bad english - but:

LAYING DOWN and COURAGE were perfect as singles for me, but when the album finally appeared, I was irritated. It was like take off on a highway - in the wrong direction ...

I first had to get used to the fact that Celine Dion sets out to new goals that I do not know yet. But I recovered from the shock, lean back in a relaxed mood.

The voice of Céline is perfect - despite the damned 'Cher-tuning'. A diva with an electric connection... But the album makes Celine's voice shine. Like a diamond in many different shades. Multifaceted. Like a chammeleon in a world of sound.

My favorites are:

COURAGE, for the first time in my life I had to cry for a song.

LYING DOWN is gigantic. I could listen eternally to the chorus with the background voices at the end.

NOBODY'S WATCHING: To my surprise, I like it. Music with understatement; calm, cool and make me dance. And I only dance every 20 years - when nobody is watching.

CHANGE MY MIND: Alone the voice is gigantic. The song is a successful example of linking her voice with new ideas and innovations. I do not know which style I should assign this song - and that's what I like about it.

THE HARD WAY: Bittersweet. Again, the last chorus should NEVER end for me.

I also like FOR THE LOVER I LOST, LOVERS NEVER THE, PERFELCT GOODBYE and the last two sounds of Celine in BOUNDARIES.

LG Stefan

Tried all my folders nothing yet ugh When is your show? Mine is in April i really hope it comes soon I'm honestly annoyed right now. I did save the screencap of the order though luckily but still I don't want to resort to having to harass them to see why i haven't received a confirmation email yet.

January 21st I think. Whatever date Tuesday is that week lol

My album review after 24 hours of non-stop listening.

Fomo : 12/20. Not fan of this song since june but I find nice it opens the album, it s positive like i m alive on a new day has come. But I prefer the live version. Was good on stage in London this summer, I hope it comes back as opener on the world tour, even lipped.

LND : 13/20. Diction makes me think about treat her like a lady. Nice but I know I won t listen a lot this one in the future.

FILA : 11/20. Not fan, I already skip this track.

LD : 18/20. For me this is the real album beginning . Love it since its launching but Sia s voice is too present for me. Hope I will see it live in Paris and Berlin !

C : 17/20 . I do love this one... and live Celine nails it. Thanks Moccio

I : 16/20 it was a grower for me in september but now it s my alarm ^^ i would imagine well this one on stage... so bizarre she does not perform it

CMM : 18/20 verty very fan of this LP song . Vocals are sooo good but diction could have been clearer.

SY : 10/20 Boring, a filler I won t listen a lot

NW : 12/20 when the album leacked I read it was a 2019 make you happy...

Hummm ... i prefer make you happy which makes me happy. This one is not very dynamic and I would not dance on.

TC : 19/20 not 20/20 cause it s too shirt for me.... in love with this one please celine add it to the setlist

FTLTIL : 11/20 Not fan of the Cher voice. I will skip fastly.

B : 17/20 This one is so cute and makes me sing and dance. Very good melody and radio friendly. Could be part of a medley with imperfections ?

IWBS : 13/20 beautiful but a filler to my eyes

HDYGH: 15/20 nice piece, I put on repeat :)

LAUN: 16/20 love it, the choir at the end is so good

PG 11/20 : I don t like sorry ,happy to have the deluxe version and not finish the album on this one. Don t know how to explain

BOA: 16/20 very relaxing I love the chilling feels of this one

HOG : 19/20 So good. Diction is bizarre on the nuuuwww and gluuuusssss words but so Celine too I like singing this one ^^ in my head all day long

B : 17/20 An other gem ♡

THW 18/20 : The end is epic I M in love with this one

S ( Someone gave me the link ) 17/20 : very good song would have been good on stage

So I m glad they gave the 4 tracks ( and Soul ), this 5 songs could have replace some fillers. I looove this album very much

Yesterday evening I listened to the album before going to bed skipping a few songs including Baby. I woke up this morning with a song in mind. I was humming it and then I realized it was Baby! It's like my brain was telling me: "You like this song but you just dont know it yet". I listened to it this morning and I have to admit it's growing on me!! Lol

I still need a few listen to really have a better idea of the album...

So far I think that Heart of Glass is magical! It is well built and the ending reaches a perfect climax that is haunting with all those Celine's vocal adlibs ! Love it! Would love to hear it on the show this Tuesday! It should be a single even if it's a bonus track on the deluxe version!

For any HiRes music fans...

The Album hands down sounds best on Qobuz streaming service.

I normally use TIDAL but since they have only released Courage on 16-bit (CD quality) so far (I sent them an email espressing my disappointment) and I have the actual CD anyway.

So I just signed up for Qobuz free trial and I guess cos it’s from France it has more Celine in Hi Resolution. I think I’ll need to switch cos it’s sublime sounding.

So Baby did nothing for me the other night on first listen but it’s beginning to click now. I thought it was totally out of place initially but I hadn’t really picked up on the lyrics 😂 Do we think that Sia wrote this specifically with Celine in mind. I think so now that I’ve had time to digest it a bit more. It certainly fits her situation but Sia being Sia, rather than giving her a ballad she’s done it in her own unique writing style.

Definitely think Boundaries should have made the standard track list. I love it and the twang in her voice during certain words is amazing.

What was the story with the Katy Perry snippet on this one again? Did she record it but not release it??

It seems she recorded it but didn’t put it on the album. It was called Hurt at the time. Lucky for us :-)

One of the most distracting things for me, personallly, is that the album seems lopsided: the front half seems weaker than the end half. Like, for example, FOMO seems out of place, and LND seems like an odd follow up, so I'm trying to fix that.

Just curious: Has anyone else tried playing around with the sequence? I'm currently reworking the track list, snipping the songs I don't love, and pushing those bonus tracks where I think they belong

Still haven't received my physical copy from TM, so I figure "what the hell?" :-D

I definitely tend to fuss with album track sequence in my personal music library to find a "flow" of songs that works for me, and I especially like to do this when there are bonus tracks, to incorporate them more into the album listening experience. (For example, in my library, I've adjusted the track order for EUS to be: 6. Les yeux au ciel/7. Ma force/8. Ordinaire/9. A vous/10. Tu sauras, so that the bonus tracks feel more integrated into the album.) I also recently played a bit with the track order for TC, which has helped me appreciate that album more. And I may be stoned for saying this, because it feels like sacrilege for a fan to question the perfection of ANDHC, but I've never particularly loved that album, and reworking the track order recently helped me enjoy that album a bit more, too.

I do feel like a few tweaks could be made for Courage, too. The thing that sticks out like a sore thumb to me the most is having "Look At Us Now" as the lead-in for "Perfect Goodbye," but there are other spots where I might make some adjustments, too, especially when it comes to mixing all those bonus tracks in with others. I'd be interested to see what your take on re-ordering the track sequence would be.

I totally agree with that. I’ll post my new track list when I’m done, and hopefully I won’t be stoned to death for doing so

Why do you guys need to bash other albums to like this one?

Are you so unsecure about it that you need to compare?

Album is out for 2 days, of course you like it more...

I bet if we dig back out Miracle's album topic, we had the same comments..

"The bedroom voice" was on 4 tracks on LMBTL and you sum up the album with it.

And it's also on this album... so I don't understand your points. Lol

I have critiqued the album on its own right and then thought of doing so in the context of her discography. To see where I can place it if I see her catalog as a whole. And I do not think anyone feels insecure about it. I mean it is not a product we released. :-D Personally I know I love it - same way I had mixed reactions when it came to her previous releases. Time will tell though. I agree time endurance is an important criterion. Now in terms of the bedroom voice, it was worse in LMBTL IMO because she was obviously trying to imitate Adele. She even covered one of her songs. And the approach to the album seemed random. In Courage she is using different textures of her voice. Not just bedroom voice. Her low register is at its best and the head voice in Boundaries is beautiful. I actually think Courage is her most diverse album in terms of singing approach and interpretation due to the various textures she utilized. Depending on the song her voice sounds crystal clear (Courage, Say Yes), thin (Lovers Never Die), raspy (Change My Mind), thick (For The Lover That I Lost), girlish (The Chase) and then you have The Hard Way which is in a league of its own. The vocal acrobatics are impressive!

Hope my points make more sense now!

Just curious: Has anyone else tried playing around with the sequence? I'm currently reworking the track list, snipping the songs I don't love, and pushing those bonus tracks where I think they belong

Still haven't received my physical copy from TM, so I figure "what the hell?" :-D

I have the physical copy but I have also created my playlist:

01.Flying On My Own

02.Lovers Never Die

03.Falling In Love Again

04.Lying Down

05.Courage

06.Imperfections

07.Change My Mind

08.Say Yes

09.Nobody Is Watching

10.The Chase

11.Baby

12.Heart Of Glass

13.Boundaries

14.Look At Us Now

15.For The Lover That I Lost

16.Perfect Goodbye

Makes more sense to me this way. The remaining songs are either filler material IMO or do not fit the album musically as they draw from soul and motown. Consider them bonus tracks.

Am I the only one thinking How Did You Get Here has a Christmassy feel to it, and would work really well on the radio during the Christmas season?

Imagine this song as a theme for a movie in the style of Love Actually now for Christmas. I know its way too late but still. Would fit so well.

Yes I thought the same too. HDYGH is appropriate for this time of the year!

Happy to see that you've had a change of heart with the album. Celine certainly surprised us with Courage and it's vibe.

I know she's said in the past she has nothing to prove but I think this is one album where she had to raise the bar and prove it once again. This marked a new beginning and Rene would be proud of what she has accomplished.

With Courage she has proved to everyone that she is still at the top of her game and can deliver. It's full speed ahead with this new era and she won't look back!

Here's one from, FYI Music News, which is the go-to news source for the Canadian music industry - https://www.fyimusic...-new-beginnings

"Today’s culture of songs over albums makes her new beginnings a resource-rich songbook for a culture seeking meaning in a world that is ever more confusing and seemingly lacking in cultural icons offering strength, hope and candour. In this respect, Courage masterfully paints a series of miniatures that speak from the heart. It is also a song-set that speaks to women, and the message is 'be strong' and be yourself. She's an inspiration that way."

So, continuing on from my earlier review, here's some song-by-song commentary. I initially had these rated on a 10-point scale but then decided I didn't like the anchoring effect of that, so let's just say my initial buckets still stand. Courage, Perfect Goodbye and Boundaries are among the best English songs of her career, and while there are some misses here, it's definitely her strongest English album from the lyrical standpoint.

If there's anything I took away from reading others' reviews in these past two weeks, both fan and professional, is there seems to be something here for everybody. And given the length, that was clearly the point. And, even though there's stylistic variety here, there's definitely consistency, too. More importantly, it's obviously so her. Her previous English efforts often felt manufactured; this one doesn't. She clearly has her fingerprints all over it. And it's so good to see that

Consistently substantial lyrics, which has not been the case in the past. Gone, too, are the affectations that made her previous English work difficult to stomach at times (like the incessant "Ooooh baby baby" interjected everywhere!) Aside from the annunciation that has already been pointed out by others, her delivery here is much more authentic than in previous records; excellent performances throughout and a lot more of the intimacy & vulnerability we're used to in her French work.

Will I be adding many of these songs to my playlists? We'll see. For the most part, it's not my kind of music - I like original melodies, real instrumentation, harmonically challenging arrangements, and definitely not this kind of synthetic production and one-note, spoken-word delivery. But, that doesn't mean it's not a quality album. Definitely a step in the right direction and her strongest English record to date. I do wish there were more epic power ballads - she's better at than than anyone else, and it's a shame not to leverage your competitive advantage.

Anyway. Thoughts:

  • FOMO: I only got through each version of this 2-3 times since release. The verses are fine, but the chorus? Oy. No. I understand why she connected with it, but the production is dated. Only version I find really listenable is the live one with real instrumentation. I hope she scratched whatever itch she needed to scratch with this one; don't need to hear something like this again. Also, a major misstep to use it as the album opener; it sticks out like a sore thumb.
  • Lovers Never Die: From the title and the opening bars, I expected a Hallmark-card ballad, and was pleasantly surprised when it wasn't. And this is the only cut where the spoken word "singing" is not distracting or awkward.
  • Falling In Love Again: Only listened to a few bars, so don't think it's fair for me to rate it. Maybe it's because I know it's based on a tabloid rumour, which makes the whole thing really awkward. Perhaps that sentiment will fade with time and I'll be able to disassociate the song from its origins and actually listen to it. TBD
  • Lying Down: This has been my fave of the early songs, and it remains one of the faves on the album. Capitalizes on Celine's strengths, which I can't say about most of the other songs. Definitely the best of the Sia songs; the other two are pretty forgettable. If there's one iconic anthem on this album, it's this one, along with Perfect Goodbye.
  • Courage: Wrote about this already at length, but to summarize, find this lyrically wonderful except for the chorus couplet, which I think really takes away from the rest of the song, but ironically is the most oft-repeated line. Very personal and intimate and, like I said before, because of the obvious vulnerability it almost feels like I need to avert my eyes when listening to it - but those are all good things. It's nice to see her go there in English. A wonderful late-night song.
  • Imperfections: Appreciate the sentiment but find the overall sound & the production extremely irritating. Hope to never hear anything in this style from her again. (Excellent video though!!)
  • Change My Mind: Not a huge fan of the production, but otherwise, this is pretty great. She sounds more nasal than usual on this one though, and it's distracting. But I'd very much like more like this in her repertoire. Solid song.
  • Say Yes: Undecided. I find it a bit lyrically uneven. It's got great moments, and some slightly cringe moments, too. It's a beautiful sentiment in the lyrics, but the turn of phrase doesn't do it justice at times. So TBD. Undeniably great performance though and I like the intimacy. It's beautifully stripped back which I definitely appreciate.
  • Nobody's Watching: Probably the biggest ear-worm on the album, and one that seems most like something she'd actually write. But it's a bit uneven in terms of production. Love the guitar opening, but not the fake chorus (mostly the "echo", the "heys" make me think of The Lumineers - and that's a good thing). A few lyrical blunders here, too, but overall it's a fun one.
  • The Chase: The thing about country is it's known for good stories in the lyrics, but musically it all sounds the same to me. That said, the production on this is better than most of these songs, and I appreciate her doing it. Not my fave genre, but it's a quality song, and I'd be cool with her doing more like this. Always here for real instruments.
  • For the Lover That I Lost: I expected this to be lyrically uncomfortable, but it's actually quite lovely. She sounds beautiful, and it's a sweet, tender, gentle song, without the cheesiness of her old records. I don't know any Sam Smith music, but he and team did rather good here.
  • Baby: A Sia reject. LMBTL was far better. This is just a bore. It goes absolutely nowhere. You get everything there is to this song in the first 20 seconds, but it meanders for 3+ minutes after that, totally unnecessarily. Plus it's just extremely nasal and, well, a downright unpleasant.
  • I Will Be Stronger: Those first 5 seconds… wow. Gets less interesting after that, but nice arrangement and I generally appreciate the lyrics, too.
  • How Did You Get Here: One of my faves simply because: real instruments! Finally! Definitely a standout if purely because of the instrumentation and arrangement. Lyrically, it's a low point (relatively speaking), but musically, a definite highlight. And I reiterate my wish she'd someday work with Mark Ronson.
  • Look at us Now: I like her performance here. The song itself I initially found pretty forgettable, but after a number of listens I grew to appreciate the arrangement, if not the production. Don't care much for the lyrics, but it's got other redeeming qualities.
  • Perfect Goodbye: Melody! Finally! And definitely among the best English-language songs she's ever recorded. From a musical & production standpoint, definitely my favourite. Lyrics, too. Also, she sounds heavenly. More like this, please!
  • Best of All: This took a number of spins, but now I really quite like it. Not a standout, but it's got its place and time, and is quite lovely when you really pay attention.
  • Heart of Glass: I have no interest in this sound. Dull and repetitive, sounds like too many other things out there. I don't go to Celine for stuff I can hear everywhere else. Better than Baby though. Not a fan of Celine's performance of either of those two though. She's always so nasal when singing Sia (LD aside).
  • Boundaries: Definitely one of the best things on the album. I don't understand why it's relegated to track 19 on the deluxe edition. Lovely lyrics, melody, performance, production. Definite standout all around. Only downside is her odd pronunciation of "r", like she's got marbles in her mouth… just glaring and distracting.
  • The Hardest Way: Not a fan of her performance here. The spoken word verses - which generally don't work for her, are really awkward, more so on this track than any other. And the rest of it is just too much; I guess this is what people mean when they complain she screams? And the enunciation is definitely lacking. Great gospel ending though!

All in all, I don't think there's any doubt this is her strongest English record.

I look forward to a more acoustic album with more real instrumentation & melodic direction, and a less synthesized sound. But, hope she retains the lyrical quality, and continues to be as hands-on as she obviously was with this one.

It's a great new direction and she should be proud. Hopefully she's on a creative roll and we don't have to wait too long for the next one.

Hear hear!!

I still can’t believe how great this album is!! It’s such a personal and beautifully done album in every way, from vocals, to song quality, lyrics and production.

Seriously not a single dud on the tracklist. I know a lot of us has said this frequently but I haven’t enjoyed Celine’s new music like this for like 17 years. The only song I didn’t care for was “Lovers Never Die” but the damn even grew on me LOL.

Since ANDHC, I was so used to skipping albums and only liking 3-4 songs on TC and LMBTL... and they had shorter tracklists, imagine how spoiled I feel listening to this whole album without skipping a single song and this album has 20 tracks!! It’s a great time to be a fan.

Peace and love to all.

Oops, that was long... sorry!

Separately, I played this on both my Alexa (via Amazon Music) and Google Home (via Spotify) and both default to the deluxe edition. It's nice to know the additional songs aren't getting relegated to some special collector's-only edition. It really seems to be the default version for streaming (though I imagine the tour bundle will include the 16-track version).

Celine has recorded a couple of songs of mine over the years but I never got to produce her until now. I am very lucky to have been in the room with Whitney and Jessica, my unbelievably talented songwriting partners, and the song we came up with is titled “The Hard Way”. Nothing worthwhile has ever come the easy way for me. Celine strongly connected with this song and I loved working hard on it with her.

One of my favorite and most personal songs I’ve been apart of is out today, & what a serious honor to have it be recorded by the legendary @celinedion. “The Hard way” is a reminder that even through the hardest times, your story ends how you say it does, and that sometimes to get home, you gotta go the hard way. I hope you guys like it and that this song finds anyone out there who may need it. ❤️ Thank u to the geniuses in the room with me that day @sirgregwells & @harloemusic . What a day, guys. Love u both so much.
