Yes, this album is a grower, after some of more listenings you might change your mind and see the wonderful

job she did with this one. I'm sure Celine was having double hapinnes yesterday when she was informed

WOW! What a great album.

At last an album that holds water after 20 years in english. IMO it's her best english album since her hiatus - SA being the best french one.

 

Very coherent, some r&b/soul vibes, not too much, not too forced. They feel natural.

Great production, no cheap and clichés arrangements. It isn't overproduced. Some are, but only when it's essential to the song, as in The Hard Way or Heart of Glass. Then Boundaries doesn't have all these instruments and sound effects, and that's what make this song special.

There's a 90's feeling on some songs, that pair oddly well with the more vintage ones. Some Pink vibes too.

Also, the Choir is put to good use on this album. It is very piano driven, a lot of songs begin with gentle piano notes.

(Sia is doing Sia in an uninspired way... except for LD which ironically is the more traditional Celine song on the album! )

 

She's got a new way of singing, very light, very modern; but there's still some of her trademarks - thankfully. She sings on her lower range. It's very nice, we don't hear it enough on disc. A revolution in her english career! It is more throaty, yes, but in a good way. It grounds the lyrics, therefore the song. It's richer, fuller, more profond but above all, not so digitally polished/smoothed as before. I'd say it's hoarse rather than throaty. And I like this grit. Not so much when she combines it with nose resonance in an attempt to make it edgier, a tic she has done since Your light. It does not always work.

The prononciation, well, it's always been an issue. Some times it's deliberate here... but i'm not sure it ALWAYS is.

heart of g-laoce, It's obvi-yes in LND... come on! falling in laaaave in Boundaries...

I love how the songwriters do the back vocals on their songs. Not so much when Celine is imitating them. Chantal Kreviazuck comme back I love you!!

 

The lyrics strike so much more personnal than before! And they're not first degree, there's real poetry here (not like those easy corny lyrics EUS have). She relates to them. Yes, this album is deep and not depressing. Really a new start (unlike TC and LTAL which were failed attempt - because of René?). It is about life and empowerment, speaks about where she is right now, it is hopeful and not at all saddening.

The mid-tempo render just that, the tracks are well picked, the mellow of it all warmth you: it's not even that dramatic, although it is at times cause, let's face it, Celine is the best at that.

 

Many times the word 'memory' appears. I mean "memowy".

The "Yoo-ooo-ooo-oo" at the end of HDYGH reminds me of the final notes in BYLM. There's also ooooos in Change my mind. 'rock touch the bottom' in Falling in love again, 'the bottom hit my soul' in The Hard Way.

Nice continuity.

 

I'm an 'old fan', and I love this evolution.

That's exactly what I wanted for so long ago: new territories, a wise use of her voice (calm when needed but not affraid to soar), current arrangement, not cheap and dated ones. Moreover, any pop singer from today could sing these songs.. and I would listen to them if they weren't sung by Celine (which is not always the case...). It's current... but with an old school twist: How did you get here, Best of all, Look at us now, For the lover that I lost, even The Hard Way (maybe cause I want it on Falling into You, my favourite album? ).)

 

This one will play all over my devices for quite a long time. Very well crafted, it totally worth the wait! Brava, celine!

I'm happy to have it at this/ moment in time. Now you HAVE TO defend it on tour. People MUST hear how GOOD it IS!

Minus: too short! Happily there's 4 more songs on the deluxe version!

Fun but dispensable. A bit cheap and dated.

Celine clearly have fun with it, so do we, so it's good to have it. It doesn't blend with the rest of the album, though. Especially if you listen to it right after How did you get here. Ashes would fit way more....

The first notes and "ummmm" start like a traditional piano ballad... then BAM! New Celine. Her new way of singing: nice flow, very modern. And she sings about her new life. Better than the title track.I love when the words strangle her at 1min. 'i need you_' break. God i love it. / 'whenever'... "no"... these breathings... Single material? It sounds very current. Never can she be able to remember all those words on stage! lol

'It's obviyes'... 'Never diiie'... LMBTL vibes: I eat it up!

A compleling fragility in her voice. 2'30 'once again' - the strengh is back, yeah!

Her voice breaks once again - I love this mimmic. Beautiful song, simple but true.

Sia, love it, modern power ballad (though i know its about a toxic relationship), passion, broken voice; perfect. It's also the more traditionnal Celine song type, which is weird considering it's written by Sia, whose style clearly infuse it.

Great phrasing, keeping on the modern way of delivering lines. Other than that, it's too on the nose, a bit cliché, I prefered Didn't know love on LMBTL. And boring. Too precious. She suddenly shouts at the end... Papillon (SSDA) souvenir.

 

Imperfections. 3,5/5

Nice one but not great. Lack of umph effect. Desperately needs a melody!!! But fresh, current, with beautiful lyrics and message.

 

These three already known ones fit just right in the mix. I like them more for that.

'We were bold, we were dust, we were energy'... love this as much as I love "I found me, I found faith, i found trust" in LD. One of my favorites; so current. Definitively single material. Actually the only one that have a real shot at some kind of succes. Mostly if she release a new version in a few months featuring LP. Can already see so many possible beautiful music videos!!!!

Some nasal intended sounds - she imitates LP. Perfect follow-up for Imperfections.

'I didnt need it but'... I really went for 'the change my miiiind' at 2min. And the way she delivers "to my dying day".

Her voice doesn't seem to have been smoothed, it feels raw! Awesome!!

The guitar, nice touch!

Perfect on stage (lipsync for the chorus of course), with shadows and light play with the lights, kinda like lace, moving rapidly.

Filler... but a grower. She holds back her voice at the beginning. I'm looviiing how the chorus arrive, with the beating.

Nice pop rock a la pink. This sound feels canadian to me, I don't know why. I sense a 90's sound. It is very easy going, that's probably why I didn't like it much at first. Too easy for my taste. But then I embarked. Well, I think it's 'okay'.

'I can visualize' - very peculiar way of saying visualize.

Nice... but nothing that particuliar. Do Sam Smith fans love it? Very banal and expected.

In love as soon as the first notes hit. A gospel singer? Even more.

That's it, we're taking off again. That's what should have happened with the meh tune that is My Oh My.

And then the bridge... up to 5 stars! (Going back to four after hearing the next one). It would make a nice single, 60's music video with back singers. Celine and the Renettes! It's more retro than the otherwise modern songs, but this vintage sound is the ancestor of the RNB/Soul moments this album have. This song is like back to basics. It fits.

An electronic organ, this new flow again... The lyrics speak so much! 'look at where we are it's amazing'

She sings a bit like Michael Jackson at times (Little Suzie). Don't get the Lana Del Rey impression most of you have.

It isn't mellow enough. Sure there's Lana's mystery, some epic arrangements her first album had... but I don't see the parallel.

The bridge is so beautiful!!! Gosh, this song glued me to my couch. It is perfect indeed! thx Celine!

 

 

BONUS TRACKS

I totally get why they're there.

The sound is a bit different, her voice is polished as in her previous albums, and some of them don't fit lyrically.

Yet, they still fit better than FOMO. Maybe they were recorded when they didn't know quite yet the direction the album would take. And maybe Celine still loved them so much she said they'd be nice as bonus tracks.

Boring. I dont like her voice in this one. It annoys me. Too longing maybe.

Sweet and smooth though. Can we cut this song, Say yes, the chase, Baby and I will be stronger? That'd make a perfect album. And of course FOMO who got on the wrong album.

Okay, Sia did not great on this album (except for LD that I adore) - this one is a direct excerpt from her discography!

But it's catchy, it does grow on me. Better than Baby. Actually it's a new sound for Celine, and it's nice to have it.

Nice vocals! The song lack of something but I can pinpoint exactly what, yet. I love how the beating adds up to the last chorus. What In some small way should have been. As I said, it doesn't have too many instruments and sound effects, and that's what make this song special. It's restraint, controled, on track.

 

The Hard Way 5/5

OMG. That voice! This song is perfect, it has everything, right to my top five!

The first notes don't prepare you for what's next, they seem taken off of another track, and yet slide easily in the rest of the track.

We really can enjoy the maturity of her skills, she slides in it so easily, it's compelling, moving, powerful.

Go ahead Celine, scream all your lungs out, feel the flow of the gospel choir!

This song has everything: low range, high range, modern flow in both soft and powerful way.

This song makes me cry, not because it is emotional, but because it is SO GOOD that it tears my guts apart and transport my mind out of my body.

Would work great to end FIY (even if Fly does a pretty decent job, it's no Vole). Call the man meet If nothing sacred anymore. Orgasmic.

There's no way/ we will ever get this one live. Even if she slays The Prayer nowadays.

I am so glad everyone finally got to have it! I can not chose my favorite song. I can tell you that I'm not crazy about IWBS and I can see that the majority of y'all love THW but that one doesn't do anything for me either. So out of the 20 tracks, I find 18 AMAZING!!!

Definitely a grower. I gave it a full listen, including bonus tracks, earlier and my immediate reaction was I though the 4 tracks we already had were the best ones. I also thought the 4 bonus tracks were better than the “standard” tracks. I didn’t “dislike” any songs these were just my very first impressions.

 

Also seems to me that Céline’s enunciation has changed greatly. Either less effort is put in, she’s somehow struggling with how to pronounce English words or it’s a conscious choice for it to sound as it does. I’m not sure but it does take some getting used to.

I'm feeling the exact same way. When I heard the album the first time, I was like hmm... and the 4 tracks that were already released were the strongest ones.

The only other one that stood out for me was "Look At Us Now". Some songs I thought wow..but then the endings or chorusses were weird.

A few songs I didn't really connect to.

 

But now that I've listened to it multiple times, most songs have grown on me and they're still doing so. I still can't form a definate opinion though

I think it's delibarate... first she loves to imitate (and you can hear it in the Sia songs and the Maty Noyes one), 2nd some songs have a certain vibe and she tries to sing it in that style (too much sometimes). I'm wondering what has been the producer's role in this, coz I can understand it in some cases, but in others, it kinda ruins the song...

This song makes me cry, which is a big thing, as I am a tough girl.

Classic-Sia. Powerful.

Simply beautiful.

That’s 35% of the album and that's good (and those are just the „favorites”!! I don't listen to current music much, so it's an impressive result. Some other songs may grow on me (except for FOMO and Baby - not my cup of tea).

Sia, love it, modern power ballad (though i know its about a toxic relationship), passion, broken voice; perfect. It's also the more traditionnal Celine song type, which is weird considering it's written by Sia, whose style clearly infuse it.

Great phrasing, keeping on the modern way of delivering lines. Other than that, it's too on the nose, a bit cliché, I prefered Didn't know love on LMBTL. And boring. Too precious. She suddenly shouts at the end... Papillon (SSDA) souvenir.

Nice one but not great. Lack of umph effect. Desperately needs a melody!!! But fresh, current, with beautiful lyrics and message.

 

These three already known ones fit just right in the mix. I like them more for that.

'We were bold, we were dust, we were energy'... love this as much as I love "I found me, I found faith, i found trust" in LD. One of my favorites; so current. Definitively single material. Actually the only one that have a real shot at some kind of succes. Mostly if she release a new version in a few months featuring LP. Can already see so many possible beautiful music videos!!!!

Some nasal intended sounds - she imitates LP. Perfect follow-up for Imperfections.

'I didnt need it but'... I really went for 'the change my miiiind' at 2min. And the way she delivers "to my dying day".

Her voice doesn't seem to have been smoothed, it feels raw! Awesome!!

The guitar, nice touch!

Perfect on stage (lipsync for the chorus of course), with shadows and light play with the lights, kinda like lace, moving rapidly.

Filler... but a grower. She holds back her voice at the beginning. I'm looviiing how the chorus arrive, with the beating.

Nice pop rock a la pink. This sound feels canadian to me, I don't know why. I sense a 90's sound. It is very easy going, that's probably why I didn't like it much at first. Too easy for my taste. But then I embarked. Well, I think it's 'okay'.

Nice... but nothing that particuliar. Do Sam Smith fans love it? Very banal and expected.

The bridge sounds exactly like her. Céline is still imitating. 'calling for you' on repeat: too nasal (not thanks, Sia!).

Same type of filler Sia's got plenty in her own albums - I'm sure she will record it! But production and arrangements are very current. Sure we will get it on tour... Easy and she loves Sia!

In love as soon as the first notes hit. A gospel singer? Even more.

That's it, we're taking off again. That's what should have happened with the meh tune that is My Oh My.

And then the bridge... up to 5 stars! (Going back to four after hearing the next one). It would make a nice single, 60's music video with back singers. Celine and the Renettes! It's more retro than the otherwise modern songs, but this vintage sound is the ancestor of the RNB/Soul moments this album have. This song is like back to basics. It fits.

An electronic organ, this new flow again... The lyrics speak so much! 'look at where we are it's amazing'

I want this song on tour!!! To close the show? I would literally die!

She sings a bit like Michael Jackson at times (Little Suzie). Don't get the Lana Del Rey impression most of you have.

It isn't mellow enough. Sure there's Lana's mystery, some epic arrangements her first album had... but I don't see the parallel.

The bridge is so beautiful!!! Gosh, this song glued me to my couch. It is perfect indeed! thx Celine!

 

 

BONUS TRACKS

I totally get why they're there.

The sound is a bit different, her voice is polished as in her previous albums, and some of them don't fit lyrically.

Yet, they still fit better than FOMO. Maybe they were recorded when they didn't know quite yet the direction the album would take. And maybe Celine still loved them so much she said they'd be nice as bonus tracks.

Sweet and smooth though. Can we cut this song, Say yes, the chase, Baby and I will be stronger? That'd make a perfect album. And of course FOMO who got on the wrong album.

Okay, Sia did not great on this album (except for LD that I adore) - this one is a direct excerpt from her discography!

But it's catchy, it does grow on me. Better than Baby. Actually it's a new sound for Celine, and it's nice to have it.

Nice vocals! The song lack of something but I can pinpoint exactly what, yet. I love how the beating adds up to the last chorus. What In some small way should have been. As I said, it doesn't have too many instruments and sound effects, and that's what make this song special. It's restraint, controled, on track.

OMG. That voice! This song is perfect, it has everything, right to my top five!

The first notes don't prepare you for what's next, they seem taken off of another track, and yet slide easily in the rest of the track.

We really can enjoy the maturity of her skills, she slides in it so easily, it's compelling, moving, powerful.

Go ahead Celine, scream all your lungs out, feel the flow of the gospel choir!

This song has everything: low range, high range, modern flow in both soft and powerful way.

This song makes me cry, not because it is emotional, but because it is SO GOOD that it tears my guts apart and transport my mind out of my body.

Would work great to end FIY (even if Fly does a pretty decent job, it's no Vole). Call the man meet If nothing sacred anymore. Orgasmic.

There's no way/ we will ever get this one live. Even if she slays The Prayer nowadays.

"Change my mind" is the topper of this album imo, but there are lots of other gems in this album.

This album also fit to the holidays time, it has good balanced in it. It's awesome.

 

I wasn't surpried I have 3 Sia songs to skip, LD is a bit better.

 

My main problem with Sia songs that it feels like those are leftovers and songs that I've heard from Sia (And Sia's "artists")

on the radio many times before. It doesn't feel like Celine "own" it and it lacks soul.

 

I was glad to see "Lovers never die" was chosen to be a single for the Netherlands, it's a good choice

so people will get used to her new style and this song has quite of cool vibes!

 

One can only dream some of those gems will get into the setlist.
