Céline to perform at the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival

WESTERN BUREAU:Businessman Walter Elmore, executive producer of the annual Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival, says the 2012 edition of the festival that will run from January 26 to 28, 2012 at the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium will be the biggest entertainment event ever staged in Jamaica.

 

"Getting Celine Dion to come here is something special because she is the biggest star in the world at this time," said Elmore. "Additionally, this event will also showcase 50 years of Jamaica's music as a part of the Jamaica 50 celebrations."

 

Elmore, who was addressing a special site inspection for sponsors at the Trelawny venue recently, said all three nights of the festival will offer something special to the patrons - especially those whose excitement level has piqued with the inclusion of Celine, who will be performing in the Caribbean for the first time.

 

According to Elmore, megastar Celine Dion, who now performs almost exclusively in Las Vegas, was in great demand, as local fans have made no bones about the fact that they wanted to see her in the Jazz & Blues line-up.

 

"Celine Dion is the most-requested act we have ever had so we are really delighted to have her," noted Elmore. "It is interesting that she has consented to collaborate with our own Diana King on the song they recorded together."

 

Interestingly, Celine Dion's visit will be somewhat limited as, according to Elmore, she will fly into Jamaica on her own private jet, perform and then leave immediately after her performance.

 

Celine, Head of State (Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant) and American rapping sensation Cee-Lo Green will add significant star power to the 2012 staging of the music festival.

 

"The first night is dedicated to the evolution of Jamaica music spanning mento, ska, rocksteady, reggae and dancehall," said Elmore. "The night is dubbed 'A Celebration of Jamaica's 50th'."

The line-up for the first night includes Ky-Mani Marley, King Yellowman, Mykal Rose, AJ Brown, John Holt, Marcia Griffiths, Etana, Shaggy, Chris Martin, Luciano, Pluto Shervington, Half Pint, George Nooks, Marcia Barrett (Boney M), Derrick Morgan, Assassin, Lloyd Parkes and We the People Band, and Byron Lee's Dragonaires.

 

"We have tried to showcase the best of Jamaica's music. If Bob Marley was alive, we would be making every effort to get him to perform," said Elmore.

 

In a special attempt to expose the festival to as many Jamaicans as possible, Elmore has inked a deal with local ground transport operators that has resulted in the establishment of a special Jazz Taxi Shuttle Service. The service will see patrons being transported from major town centres to the festival in a special affordable package deal.

 

"We have made Jazz Taxi Shuttle arrangements for Mandeville, Santa Cruz, Negril and other rural town centres," added Elmore. "We will also have the Knutsford Express service from Portmore, Kingston and Ocho Rios."

Lol, I guess that makes sense a little bit. Being from Indiana and having never been out of the country that sounds exciting.

 

I still think it sounds exciting, even if they are similar in their weather and what they offer. Even though that's the same, they're both completely different countries and so you see so much that is different. I've never been there so it's hard to say, but judging from the Jamaica I see on movies, it doesn't seem all the same!

But overall I am a bit tired of artists who diss the entire theme of festivals and does only songs from other genres. This is a jazz festival. She should sing mostly jazz songs. Yes I get that she must sing a few of her hits for the Jamaican people but the majoroty of songs should respect the festival's theme. Otherwise there's no point in having a Rock festival, a Blues festival or a Jazz festival if people don't stick to that genre. I mean it's not like they call it just Music festival. They have a profile. Respect that.

That's what shocked me about her appearance on that festival. At first I didn't trust it all... But who knows, maybe she just jazzies her songs.

 

Moreover, I would like to know the opinion of the die hard fans of the festival having a pop-singer as the "biggest artist" there. I guess some people aren't really happy with that

I'd expect nothing less from you! How ya been? Been awhile since we chatted!

 

Anyway, there was information on a prior page about that. Someone mentioned that last years festival was airing not to long ago (don't know if it was a re-air and the original was aired much earlier, or if this was the first airing). I'd assume the same would be for this year.

 

But I'm really excited for this! Celine doesn't do to many one-off concerts not apart of her regular routine. And when she does, we usually don't see them or know much about them because they're private. I guess this is something I'd like to see more of...Lady GaGa has so much concert footage out there simply because she performs at so many festivals and events that allow her to perform essentially a full set of songs and it airs on TV.

I hope so. I kinda hope that they return to the full arrangements for LCMM and RDMH, like the TCWT, and also return to the old hits medley where TPOL had a first verse and IACTBMN had the long intro.

 

The only way I'd like to see them use the medley of the new show is if she sings DOL instead of the backup singers, which considering she did this at Florida it could be possible.

It would be quite weird if her participation in the festival lasted less than an hour, 'cause she is like the main star in this year's edition of the festival. They've been trying to have her performing there for the last 2 years, so I think she'll perform for maybe 1 hour and half, or an hour and 40 minutes.

So if the setlist is mainly her Vegas show plus 2 songs, is there any songs from the show that you think may be cut from this show? Or do you think much will be changed in order of songs?

 

For instance, would Open Arms as an opener be well suited for this? Will the MJ medley be excluded (and perhaps the Queen medley brought back as its better suited for a touring kinda show). What about the other covers? I don't see the hologram duet with herself being performed. I'm not sure about a few songs.

4. You'll Have to Swing It

5. The Reason

6. All By Myself

7. Love Can Move Mountains // River Deep, Mountain High

8. My Heart Will Go On

 

I have no idea where they are gonna put Treat Her Like A Lady and the remaining song, which, by the way, could be:

 

*The first single from the upcoming English album

*Another song from her own catalogue that would suitable for the event

*A song that she has never performed nor recorded before suitable for the event

*A huge live collaboration with all the other artists who'll perform at the festival that day

 

I don't really think HDYKTMP and TP would really match that type of show. Not even necessary to mention Lullabye. I'm quite not sure about WDMHBN.
