RomualdlovesCeline Posted July 16, 2011 at 08:38 PM Posted July 16, 2011 at 08:38 PM i think Taking Chances(the song) was the greatest choice for the first single, because it represanteted the whole edgier concept. We have to admit that the album is more rock, edgier than any other Celine album. And the song fits perfectly.the problem was the next single choices.Alone had never should be the next single.I always thought that Map to my my heart or The reasen I go on are very good, and they should made better than Alone. So the first single:Taking chances, second Map to my heart or The reason I go on, than Cant fight the feeling(more edgier), than Surprize surprize, after, another ballad, My love or A World to believe, and than This time. I think the album would have worked if Celine didn't hop on tour just after the album's release. She was still in Vegas at that time and she was preparing for TCWT. Her team was busy with both so they didn't sort out things like they should. Hopefully, this new release will be more thought thoroughly
RomualdlovesCeline Posted July 16, 2011 at 11:00 PM Posted July 16, 2011 at 11:00 PM what's so interesting about TC is that it was first sent to radio as a single by a "mystery artist" - sony was looking for a way to circumvent contemporary / mainstream / hot 100 radio's (incorrect) belief that their audiences don't and won't like it if they hear a celine song. guess what? it didn't work - my guess is that, yes, the quality of the song had something to do with it (not much of a hook); in hindsight, i think sony could have actually achieved their goal if they had been thinking bigger. think three "mystery" singles, simultaneously in three different markets: fade away, surprise surprise, EOM remix (which they never released, probably bc its one performance did NOT go well) ... each fit well in the AC / modern rock / pop markets. but would celine herself have ever wanted to do this? the problem, then as always, is that celine lacks the confidence to think for herself as a businesswoman. she needs to start playing off of her symbolic capital more - which doesn't mean she needs to embrace this constant reinvention philosophy a la madonna that has defined and limited her most recent releases - but rather that she needs to start thinking of herself more as a creative brand, a conversation, a narrative, rather than just a voice...my hope is that this next album serves to highlight her voice in a way that harkens back to the 90's - before she damaged it (which DID happen, it's very obvious; i doubt we'll ever get the full story on it bc that voice is one of sony's most important assets / investments, but it happened sometime around 1998...probably a nodule or polyp or something along those lines, celine never sang with proper technique and so spent most of her career breaking her voice, much like whitney did; but celine is white and never smoked crack so we all look the other way) but that is also fresh, humorous, inspiring, and somehow a bit melodramatic, nostalgic, or reverential; allowing us to dream back to the time when music came out of a CD player rather than a laptop or ipod... I think the problem does not come from either Sony or Team Celine, I think the problem is with Celine herself. If you saw any of her promotional itv for her album TC; she talks about her family 99% of the time and the album talk is "I love the new material it's edgy and writers send me edgy songs" and the whole blabber afterwards is about RC's hair, when she's going to get pregnant again (in 07), the AND show. This shows a lack of interest in the new material recorded and the interview could be used to any purpose but to promote a new album. If Celine likes to put her family first even when promoting a freaking album, well people won't get any message about how good is the album if there's no mention of it
Tyler1991 Posted July 16, 2011 at 11:57 PM Posted July 16, 2011 at 11:57 PM Skin color does have an impact on this. Hate to say it, but it really does. On the radio they mentioned that there was only one song in the top 20 (two counting Katy Perry, but some rapper was featured on the song so it doesnt really count) on iTunes by a WHITE person...everything else was of some other ethnicity. I think it's a true statement that whites are more apt to listen to Kanye West than other races are to listen to Lady GaGa...
SuperLove4Celine Posted July 17, 2011 at 12:06 AM Posted July 17, 2011 at 12:06 AM I can't believe the racist comments I'm reading on here. Skin color has absolutely NOTHING to do with any of this. The lack of sales of Celine's recent albums has to do with lack of promotion and the lack of creativity by her team. Man, I can see why people are jumping ship from this forum. This may be the push I've needed to officially end any affiliation with CDF. Talk about a waste of Internet space.

SuperLove4Celine Posted July 17, 2011 at 12:36 AM Posted July 17, 2011 at 12:36 AM It's not racist if its the proven truth with facts and numbers to support it. If your inability to wrap your head around that simple logic proves to tough for you, then perhaps this is a "waste of space". Celine Dion has fans from all walks of life. If her material is not promoted accurately and creatively then of course album sales are going to suffer. Her lack of album sales is a direct correlation to poor management and lack of sufficient marketing and promoting. Using skin color as an example or excuse for her lack of album sales IS racist since it has been proven time and time again that it is HER MANAGEMENT, NOT HER FANS' SKIN COLOR, which has proven to drop the ball.
Tyler1991 Posted July 17, 2011 at 12:45 AM Posted July 17, 2011 at 12:45 AM It's a proven fact that r&b, hip-hop, rap, etc are derived from primarily black influences. Over the past few years, there has been a surge in this genre (over pop, rock, and country). Look at the songs of these genres. How many are by black artists? How many are by white artists? If you honestly think it is 50-50, then you've been hiding under a rock. Even in pop music, there is a huge increase in pop-stars trying to increase their audiences by appealing to these other genres a bit by collaborating with the rappers. Katy Perry's hit E.T. featured Kanye West, for example. Mariah was huge at this in the 90's and achieved a ton of success with this. Even Celine has tried this....do you honestly think she chose to sing a song with Ne-Yo and Will.I.Am because they're two of her favorite artists who she listens to everyday?? PUH-LEASE! This isn't racist at all. It's just looking at things how they are - perhaps sociologically? Take a look at the charts yourself, and you will see. Over the past few years, there has been a decrease in "white music" receiving commercial success (in terms of charting). This is not to say that there wasn't problems with the marketing and promotion that Sony did, because I believe there was problems....but the music industry has without a doubt shifted over the years to a more r&b/rap/hip hop direction, and as I said, whites don't have nearly the influence in those genres. One last thing.... go on FaceBook. Go to the profiles of your caucasian friends (who are under 30). Look at their music. They will probably have "liked" quite a few rappers among the white people. Now do the same for your african american friends (also under 30 in age)....chances of them having Britney, Katy, Adele, GaGa, etc....not nearly as high as the whites having Lil-Wayne, Black Eyed Peas, Kanye, Jason Derulo, Bruno Mars, etc...

That's why I don't particularly care for her latest interviews. Once you watch one, you have seen them all! And someone mention a couple posts earlier that Celine damaged her voice in 1998. Is that true? Thanks for the info!Alicia

However, I have gut feeling Celine would say differently. I am done with this. I would be done to if I was proven wrong. You obviously did not understand the point I was making. I clearly attributed everything to a change in the music industry and what is and isn't hot these days.... It's pretty clear that the genre of Celine's music in the 90's is no longer around these days. This is where all her success has came from, so this is where people place her in their minds. Once molded into one genre by the public, un-doing that is extremely difficult. Celine's marketing and promo could have been better, yes.... but as I said, the biggest cause is a change in the industry. And if I were making this about race, then I'd go as far to say that Nicki Minaj could take Treat Her Like A Lady to #1 today, or Rihanna could take Shadow Of Love to #1, etc.... no...not at all. That is NOT what I'm saying, because it's not true.

I understand what you say; however, this shift in the music industry is actually changing; Susan Boyle, Adele are "white" and classic pop adult contemporary singers and they both have had huge success and Adele has her 2nd album "21" still charting on the billboard 200 at number 2 today while her album was released in January 2011. I understand the facts you are talking about but those facts were more apparent in the beginning of the 2000s than now. Edited July 17, 2011 at 02:35 AM by RomualdlovesCeline
Tyler1991 Posted July 17, 2011 at 02:41 AM Posted July 17, 2011 at 02:41 AM Susan Boyle is not mainstream at all. LMAO. She was a talent show contestant with a lot of hype. And I never once said that white singers such as Adele couldn't have success. I just said that today it is less and less likely. Let's not forget that those with a powerful voice break out into the music scene with success at the start.... time will tell if Adele is another Leona Lewis or not.

I hardly think they are even comparable. Leona Lewis is just another corporate singer who does whatever the label tell her. People flock more to Adele because she writes her own songs from her own experiences. Perhaps you should choose another example. I also think that being purely positive of absolutely everything that Céline does whether it is her behind the decision or not is very blind and horrendously naive. Constantly having your hopes up leaves more devastation when they are crushed. Edited July 17, 2011 at 08:43 AM by artekoublier

Alex_Incognito Posted July 17, 2011 at 06:54 PM Posted July 17, 2011 at 06:54 PM Oh please. I get SO SICK of people's "she's got so much on her plate with the twins" crap. Let's not forget all of the help that she has (and can afford). Think of all the mothers that have to go to work right after their pregnancy, they work. Women have had babies since the human race began, and I doubt that those early women talked about how hard it was to be a mom, perform at Caesars, and win awards. Recording an album takes hardly any time at all for her. They pick out the songs, then the instrumental parts are put together without her, and she goes in to record. If she hates it, she says no and they do things over. She's not some fragile woman that falls apart with stress. She could record as much as she wanted to (she has the time---she doesn't do THAT MANY concerts a year), she just doesn't want to. My rant is over.
