Celine Dion's return to Caesars could help economy in 2011

Confirming what's been one of the city's worst-kept secrets, Canadian songstress Celine Dion recently announced on Oprah Winfrey's show that she's returning to the Strip with a three-year residency at the Colosseum, the very stadium Caesars Palace officials built for her first Vegas run. That's the good news. The bad news: Dion's shows don't start until March 2011. Las Vegas could certainly use those shows right about now.

 

Though the Southern Nevada Index of Leading Economic Indicators showed year-over-year improvement in gaming revenue and visitor volume for the first few months of 2010, the city's unemployment rate still hovers around 13%, much higher than the national average of 10%. The state's $881 million budget deficit has cities and counties scrambling to cut spending between 10% to 20% to avoid layoffs.

 

Enter Dion, whose five-year run of sell-out shows at the 4,100-seat Colosseum was a boon for Caesars. She was a one-woman job creation machine, employing dozens of people. According to a press release, the new show will premiere on March 15, 2011, and feature 31 musicians, consisting of a full orchestra and band. The concept will focus on capturing the romance of classic Hollywood movies.

 

"I'm coming back home to the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, and I'm very excited about it," Dion said in a statement. "With the orchestra and the band, we're going to be able to perform our songs like never before. The repertoire is going to be extraordinary ... a mix of timeless Hollywood classics, along with all the favorites that my fans like to hear me sing.

 

"It's going to be a very beautiful show, and I think we'll be raising the bar higher than we've ever done before."

 

"Caesars Palace is thrilled to welcome Celine's fans from all over the world," said Gary Selesner, president of Caesars. "I can't overstate the excitement among our team members, guests and partners, all of whom consider Celine and her husband Rene [Angelil] special members of the Caesars Palace family."

 

Tickets for the first 54 performances from March 15 through Aug. 14, 2011, are on sale now. They can be purchased by calling (877) 423-5463 or by logging on to www.ticketmaster.com. Prices range from $55 to $250, not including taxes and fees. VIP ticket packages are available on Ticketmaster. Tickets may also be purchased at the Colosseum at the box office. Ha ha ha ha!! That totally reminds me of the AND opening trip I took! I had two tickets to opening night and the second night and my sister was supposed to come but couldn't so I ebay'd the other ticket and the first night was fun, don't completely remember who I sat next to but the woman who bought the ticket for the second night slept through 90% of the show!! I spent every other minute looking over at her like :o :o LOL go figure...

Is anyone going to see the show during the summer? I really wanted to go to the premiere but I can't and im so sad that I won't be there for the forum meeting but summer is the most probably time I can go and i'm wondering which forum members are/might go during the summer.

I'm going in the summer! I'm a teacher so summer works best for me (I'd love to be at the premier, but it doesn't fall over a school vacation and I can't take off work). I'm attending the July 30th show.

I think there will be. One of her dancers from the TC tour (Miguel) has his Facebook location as Las Vegas and I think he's based in Chicago. So maybe she's using some of the TC & AND dancers for the new show. I would hope so, but ya know, I think they are developing the show as we speak. So they don't even know what it will all encompass yet. We're gonna be hearing tons of rumors, set lists, etc but only on March 15 2011 will we know for sure.

I could have went to the premiere because its during my Spring Break but I will most likely go in the summer since I go to LA a lot and its close to Vegas and my mom's best friend is also a Celine fan and we could all go together like we did in 2007 but Celine was on a vacation so we didn't get to see the show
