Mariah Carey is not only revisiting her past appearance-wise (lately the singer has been wearing her hair in loose curls, as seen during the early days of her career), but she's also taking her sound back to her R&B roots. On Carey's latest album, "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" (with the exception of the first single, "Obsessed," and the hood-girl-sounding "Up out My Face," among a few others), the singer leaves behind the teeny-bop themes and hip-hop-heavy melodies of 2008's "E=MC2." Instead, she opts for big ballads and R&B tunes about love and heartbreak, which makes the new set more cohesive and age-appropriate. Carey croons in her staple high-pitched voice over piano and finger snaps on "Angels Cry," while singing about true love alongside a thumbing bass on "Inseparable." Meanwhile, "The Impossible" takes its cue from early-'90s group Jodeci's "Forever My Lady." Overall, Carey's throwback vibe on "Memoirs" is refreshing and much welcomed.

OMFGGG... I can't believe it. This album blew me away seriosulsly. This is a musician’s album if you know what I mean. I'm very happy with it.

2. Obsessed - Still amazing. 10/10

 

3. H.A.T.E.U. - One of her best songs ever. In the Top 5. That is all. 1000000/10

 

4. Candy Bling - Perfect slow jam! 10/10

 

5. Ribbon - Great! Really awesome song. 9/10

 

6. Inseparable - I didn't expect it to be amazing but it is! 10/10

 

7. Standing O - Thumpin'! Great use of the vocoder. - 10/10

 

8. It's a Wrap - PERFECT! 2nd best track on the album. 10/10

 

9. Up Out My Face - Crap. I hate it so much. I liked it a bit when the 3rd snippet came out then went back to hating. Horrible mess. 2/10

 

10. Up Out My Face (Reprise) - Better. I like it because of the band. 7/10

 

11. More Than Just Friends - Love it! 10/10

 

12. The Impossible - Such a sweet song. Even if it's about Nick, it's gorgeous. 10/10

 

13. The Impossible (Reprise) - It's really good, though they could've changed it up more. 8/10

 

14. Angel (The Prelude) - So pretty! 9/10

 

15. Angels Cry - Though people say it's a WBT rehash, on it's own it's still a great song! 9/10

 

16. Languishing (The Interlude) - 3rd best on the album. There should've been one other song on the album like this, it just screams classic Mariah. Perfection. 10/10

 

17. I Want to Know What Love Is - Amazing! - 10/10

 

3rd favorite album of hers after Daydream and Butterfly. Amazing!

It's funny that you mentioned this but actually I think it's the complete opposite this time. Mariah's gayest albums imo are Music Box and Rainbow. MOAIA has a few ghetto songs and these slow jams, I already can see them being sex anthems But anyway, that's just my opinion.

MC, i'm sorry for i have sinned. i listened (read: listened. not downloaded) to a couple of songs. couldn't help it! dang!

 

so far, my favorite is Angels Cry. yeah it's quite WBT-ish, but it works this time. on the 2nd verse of the song, she actually sounded quite like the way she sounded on Daydream's When I Saw You. that sweet/gentle voice i haven't heard from her in a long while.

 

about Up Out My Face, it's kinda weird. i liked it when i first heard of its snippet, but when i heard the full track, err i can't even explain how i feel about it! i just don't like it anymore.

 

but after hearing few tracks, i'm happy to say, the album sounds better than E=MC2 and TEOM combined. especially the lyrics.

By the sound of the album it's apparent that her husband has a positive influence on her musically. The whole CD is surprisingly passable with some really nice standout tracks like Standing O, Angels Cry and It's A Wrap. In general you can put on the record late evening and just let it play while it blends nicely with whatever you're doing.

The final 3 tracks are good, I love Angel's Cry and Languashing. But the rest is just not my thing. And what is with the fingerclicking beats? Overused and annoying!

Up Out My Face is awful, it's the only really bad song on MOAIA in my opinion. Dunno why she would let They Don't Know Me, Imperfect, and the Timbaland track go into the bin for that trashy song. Angels Cry is really beautiful, and I love the prelude Angel with all of the whistles. And it's way better lyrically than E=MC2 and TEOM.
