I think gone are the days when any singer on this planet they call earth could have more than one BIG single to boost his/her album sales. Mimi had TMB and that was it; Madge had "4 Minutes" and that was it. Even Alicia Keys w/ the cunning Clive Davis on her side only had "No One'. Lovin U' may or may not turn out to be a hit, but the effect on the album will be nothing major, I think. TMB was huge at the time of the release of E=MC2 and yet the album dropped quickly. More promotion might help but, again, the impact will be nothing major. Mimi appeared on Oprah and multiple episodes of American Idol in the midst of a promo campaign that Lil Wayne, Coldplay and Carrie Underwood (all of whom out-debuted Mimi) didn't have.

 

By the way, Madonna sold 113k this week which means TCH is now AHEAD in week-after-week sales! And yes, unlike Mimi and Madge, Celine is yet to come up with a single to support her album sales. Who knows?

Up till this point, her album has sold just over 2 million as compared to her first album which has sold 7 million. But almost every one of her singles she has released has gone to #1. How well a single does is dependent on how well the record company pushes it, and of course how well an artist promotes it. I believe Carrie Underwood has been touring constantly for almost 3 years now?

They didnt pull back anything the single "flopped" by itself!I dont see why mariah fans need to create rumors. Mariah or the label chose "bye bye" (many said WBT 2 and 19° #1) as the second single maybe they believed in that song but it failed!

I wouldn't say that because Carrie has had #1s on the Country charts which we all know doesn't do much for the worldwide sales. Besides, Mariah is/was a global artist so if we look at it, then Mariah should have sold more. If we are talking about Carrie, her album hasn't been released worldwide. And that 2 million plus album sales for 'Carnival Ride' is basically from her US sales alone (I don't know about the other countries, but Carnival Ride just like Some Hearts is sold as an import here in India which means its double of the actual price and there is just no promo for her like Mariah). And if we consider the fact that she is somewhat unknown worldwide, it's not bad. With the promotion Mariah had for E=MC2, its totally unfair to compare Carrie's 'Carnival Ride' with that of Mariah's.

 

Anyway, 'Hard Candy' will be certified GOLD next week for sales over 10k (uncorrected format) here in India but no certifications for either TCh or E=MC2

TMB was big before the album release and during the first 1-2 weeks which helped. Her 2 first weeks were good IMO.

You can't call an album that debuted at #1 (and stayed #1 the first 2 weeks) in America, was her biggest opening week ever, produced a #1 song that holds the record for most downloads on iTunes for 1 week a flop. Yeah I know Europe bla bla ... even if it's a flop in Europe as a whole it's not a flop. As I said it may not be a smash but it's not a flop either.

And yes, it sure isn't a flop considering the disappointing album sales of cd sales by any aritst but if we consider it as a Mariah album, it is! I say this to Celine's two fab albums as well - D'elles ( I so wanna kill Celine's team for not promoting this album like they should have ) and Taking Chances!

 

But overall, it's an OK seller.

I think the new album is great.

 

I'm glad that I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time is the new single. I was worried it wouldn't happen ever.

 

The thing that concerns me is how low album sales are. The thing is, CD sales are down so bad that this album might be near 2 million if it were 2005 or 2006. But if it keeps going like this, posterity will see this album as failing even if it has a string of successful singles.

EW Names Mimi 21st Best Album of Past 25 Years

The 1000th issue of Entertainment Weekly dated July 4, 2008 celebrates the new classics: the 1000 best movies, TV shows, albums, books, etc. from 1983 to 2008.

 

In "The Classics: Music" category, Mariah's tenth studio album, The Emancipation of Mimi, is listed at #21 on the Top 100 Best Albums of the past 25 years.

I totally agree about country music pretty much staying within America. I'm just drawing a parallel here to show that an artist may still be able to have singles doing well in spite of an album that is not doing as well. And actually, Carrie Underwood's albums have been released in many parts of Asia as a local release and not an import, probably due to the connection with American Idol. Another example would be Madonna with 4 Minutes. It did reach #4 on the Billboard charts which is respectable, but her album on the other hand hasn't been doing as well. But of course that's just taking the USA into account. I think for some artists, the record company tends to push the singles more than the album.
