New Celine CBS TV Special 2008 - That's Just The Woman In Me - 2-15-2008

I would have to say that I am leaning more towards your thinking as well.

 

In my own very humble opinion [and isn't this the forum that I have as a fan to scream out my opinion? lol] the record label, her management, herself, whoever we want to pinpoint this all to... they are doing an average job "re-introducing" her to the scene. Yes, they are gently reminding us that Celine, oh, she's the gal who sang MHWGO, TPOL, BYLM, IACBTMN, etc, etc, etc, but again, its all being done "gently"... if they wanted to really remind the world of the talent that is Celine, she'd be signing these LIVE [even if it's just small little snippits of the songs...um hello, like on OPRAH? though better rehearsed and to live music lol] AND her new stuff, which is utterly amazing, would be showcased a little better. our attitudes, as well as the general publics would be "holy cow, i heard that she covered Heart's "ALONE", but when she sang it LIVE, she tore it up... I can't wait to see her in concert...Let's go buy tickets" .

 

It's obvious Celine has talent. It's apparent that in 2008, an artist who is slated to perform at all...wether it be on a TV special, on an award show, on American Idol or on a morning show... that artist had better bring it, and bring it good. No appearance is "free". We all pay for cable television or the internet, as well as paying for concert tickets.

 

No one is forced to listen to Celine... we all choose what we like. Ive been a fan of Celine's for quite some time. This is the first time [recent months] that I haven't felt like shouting it on the roof tops. When TC came out, I was buying copies for friends and loved one... sending people iTunes gifted TC albums... I was spreading the word that Celine is back, and friggin awesome. Now all those friends know what the studio versions sound like, and have all commented "that TV performance sounded just like the album", to which I am forced to shrugg off and pretend like I knew Celine had a cold or something., which is only 1/3 of the time, because the rest of the time she's miming to old songs from the Vegas show and people haven't been able to hear new stuff.... it's frustrating as a fan.

I went to the Audience with Celine ITV special in London. My boyfriend is a famous news reader so we managed to get tickets sat with all the celebrities. But within seconds everyone knew she was miming. It was obvious. It was embarassing. Celine talking about how much she loves to sing, yet opening and closing her mouth in time to the words with no sound coming out. People are much more aware of singing. And it's thanks to shows like Pop Idol, American Idol, X Factor etc. Week after week, peole singing 100% live. It's now what we expect. We don't put up with fake performances anymore.

 

One more thing: 'she has got nothing left to prove'. Oh yes, she has. In this game, you're only as good as your last performance. Forget that, and you die. You need to keep impressing. That's how Madonna's lasted so long. Madonna, still the highest female earner, last album a No 1 hit. Where did Celine's album come? You have to prove. Again and again and again. Or else only the die hard fans (like people on here) are bothered and buy your stuff and see the concerts. Last time she came to tour the UK, she performed Wembley Stadium, the biggest stadium in Europe. Twice. Now it's arenas. No, she has to prove. Or people loose interest.....

Celine has tourned a LOT more than Madonna, and has even been on stage every week for the last five years, doing exactly the same show, some of it mimed. This is no longer about artistry. Same songs, same show, same town, night after night, week after week, month after month, year after year. It made a lot of money. Done nothing in the name of art or music. Same old songs. Nothing innovative. She's not David Bowie.

 

And no I'm not forced to look at her or listen to her. Nor is anyone else. And that's why many aren't. Even her biggest fans on here.

And when Celine says she has nothing to prove, I don't think she means to the world or to the music industry. I think she means she has nothing to prove to herself. She was always a very disciplined perfectionist, constantly trying to better herself. Now, she is more grounded and knows what she can do and what she has accomplished. She does not need to prove it to herself anymore.

I also don't think she is out to impress. If Celine was left with only die-hard fans (of which there are many), I think she would be quite happy with that. If she never performed again and people stopped talking about 'best-selling female vocalist' this, '200 million records' that, I don't think she would care. Of course, after a cerain time that might change and, like most stars, she might miss the limelight. If you have lived in the spotlight all your life and it's all you've known, it must be almost impossible to know if you can live without it. But at present, she seems more occupied with other things. And I fear this might be Celine's last tour. At least for a while...

 

This is pure speculation, of course, but this is the impression I get from seeing and listening to Celine these last few months.

From reading the comments on here, it seems that many people believe that Celine makes decisions regarding what single is to be released, what to sing on specials, etc. Coming from someone who works in the entertainment industry and knows people who work in the music side of it, this is not the way that it works. Celine gets paid a fee (which I'm sure is HUGE) for each song that she records. Then, she is out of the picture. The studio owns the album and decides what songs are to be released (with I'm sure a lot of input from Rene). She might put a little input in but, more than likely, these aren't her decisions. She just records the music, plays with her son and let's other people decide what's going to be on the radio. Again, with her specials, the studio is going to decide what albums they want to sell and will be in collaboration with Rene about what Celine should sing on said special and whether or not she should sing it live or lip-synch it. I would say she is more like 25 percent of the decision making process, if that.
