"D'Elles" - on the charts!

Dion has biggest debut of '07

 

Celine Dion may still be in Las Vegas, but Canadians haven't forgotten about her.

 

Dion's French-language album "D'elles" shot to the top of the Canadian album charts, selling 72,000 copies in its first week, making it the biggest debut of the year, according to data compiled by Nielsen SoundScan Canada.

 

It marks her tenth No. 1 album in the SoundScan era, and her eighth to debut at the top position.

 

Dion's high-water mark for Canadian sales remains 1997's "Let's Talk About Love," which had opening week sales of 230,000 -- a record debut which still stands to this day.

 

Maroon 5 had the unenviable task of going up against Dion this week, but the band managed some decent numbers themselves. Their sophomore album, "It Won't Be Soon Before Long," debuted at No. 2 with sales of 20,000.

I love these reports!!! Go Celine! She always does things in a big way. Yipee! Now the album has to keep its momentum going. Get A Cause and Immensite on the air simultaneously. Saturation is what Celine does best

the numbers prove one more time the power of promotion - celine could sell more than 100k in france if they only promoted the album there . it's great she is no 1 but 55k for france is bad - ONCP is a greatest hits album and it sold twice as much .

i fear next week we'll see a major decline in sales both in canada and france .

 

yeahh the special might do good for the album in france but it's too little too late and it's not really about the album+other than that we'll probably see zero promotion in canada and as for france - we'll have to wait til october and i'm not sure whether DELLES will still be relevant commercialy until then .

 

Hmmm the special in France is scedualed on June 9th right? I think she'll sale much more in France when the special is aired! And I still don't think it's that bad! I saw on mininova even before D'elles was officially released that 4500 people already downloaded it! Maybe they should enclude illegal downloads in the charts aswell!

few comments on some things i read here :

 

1 - someone here mentioned ONCP as a double CD which is why it sold twice as much as DELLES - it's the other way around!! the fact that it's a double CD means that the price is higher! they r not counting each one of the CD's !

 

2 - 1F4T sold almost 3 times as much as DELLES and it's only 1 CD .

 

3 - i truely think the special wont make such a diffrence davey - she might sell 50k again but nothing dramatic...this special is not even about DELLES - i hope they'll atleast mention the album

 

4 - u all have to remmember that eventho the results in canada r amazinggggggg , celine is not planning to promote it there ...the TVA special was probably the only promotion they'll get there and as far as i know other than the TF1 special celine is not planning anything special for france til october which is far too late .

 

5 - soon she wont even have the time to think about DELLES as her first english single is due in 3 months or so .

lol yeah you got some points gogo... but don't give up hope! TCOML made a tremedous comeback in 1995, more then a year after it's release, because of TT... so hopefully, they'll really pick out good follow up singles... cos I don't think Immensité is going anywhere... AC/OSEA in the summer and in the fall even if there's an english album... a single, so Céline can perform it live!! LP or ESJQU or LTQC!

 

and if all fails you just have to mortgage your house and buy 100.000 copies of D'elles! maybe you'll get a discount then!

i think they do count as 2cds, seen it happening with greek albums.

i think it doesn't matter if the tv special is not so much about D'elles as long as it is about Celine

Gogo- why can't you just say that it's great that she's number 1? You're depressing the joy of Celine's success! What more can she do so that you actually don't have anything negative to say? You argue about ANYTHING & EVERYTHING. eg-

Who cares what was counted when ONCP was no.1? D'elles is number 1- she's done it again. That should be enough. And it's definately unfair to say that D'elles will be dismissed.

 

It's just getting on my tits that you comment negatively on anything someone posts in hope or praise for Celine- yes you'll say "so don't read it, it's a discussion board, everyone has their opinion" but you're just non-stop "I don't think it'll do well, I don't think this will make a difference2. You're the most pessimistic creature

stevo - i'm only being realistic here . celine was always very popular in france - there is no place in this world where they love her more other than her hometown ofcours...selling 55k in france is not very good and that's my point . i'm sooooooooooo happy she is no 1 but i know she could sell much more had they promoted the album there!!!

look what 1 special can do - she sold more than any other artist THIS YEAR in canada and it's not even an english album...it's still not too late for france but let's face it - it's not like they r planning to start promoting the album there . do u really think the album would still be relevant commercialy in october?

I'm agree with you, the best way to increase sales would be to create an explosive clip for "A cause" and boost the promotion because it's not enought yet.

Gogo, I think it's perfect that Celine is #1 with 55k in France. It just means the album will keep its momentum longer. And i think this was planned all along. As it's the case with really popular artists like Celine, it's normal that their first week is huge in terms of sales and then they drop dramatically in the 2nd week. But what Sony is doing, is stretching that momentum with a Celine TV Special two weeks after the release - and the album will go up the chart again. In Canada, it's different. She had to promote it big right at the beginning because the English album is coming. But in France, they have more time to promote the French album (since the English album will be just a side thing in France). So basically she'll promote the two albums in France at the same time! I think it's a smart strategy. Why push it so much at the very beginning when you can keep it in the TOP 10 for many weeks?

English Canadians didn't even know Celine released a French album as hardly any French music is played in English Canada. Sad but true. But now by hearing that Celine's French album is at the top of the Cnd charts, people will hear about it... and it will lead to more sales in English Canada...

judging from the past it's not really sony's strategy , sony never had a strategy regarding celine's career . celine always had to promote herself and that's what she did , that's why she sold so many albums in the past . now however she cant be in france as her las vegas show is still on . i truely think only her visit to france would really help revive the album and i fear october will be too late

 

DELLES is her best french album ever and i think it's important for as many people as possible to hear it - each person who buy this CD is either a fan or someone who would be a fan from now on....with OH for example , i was really glad it flopped - i didnt want people to buy this album cause i knew most of the people who bought it would never buy any of her CD's again , specialy if that's her first CD they bought . now it's the other way around - she can really build a new fanbase with this amazing album

also for JT's album too, in this case it has strong starts and then drop out of chart (i mean album chart) and then it's back to the chart

i'll second that but i think the video must have a story relative to the lyrics and i definately wanna see Celine running with high heels and short black dress ala "l'amour et la cite" style ... in Paris streets maybe?? to find her lover?? now that could be a hit (hopefully in non francophone countries too)

 

i think october won't too late for D'elles as long as they keep releasing singles by then. a cause now , les paradis in august and le temps qui compte in october?

With all the other stars the special will attract far more people and also non-Céline Fans, that then will buy the album (probably). SO it's actually an advantage...
