Opinion: The Elvis - Celine Dion Video Revisited; A Christmas Lift Perhaps

I’m old enough to remember Elvis Presley and young enough to appreciate Celine Dion. Both together are magic, as critics maintain, and as evidenced in a great video that makes music what it should be—beautiful.

 

The video, originally shown a year ago, is new to many folk, as it is now making the rounds at the end of 2008 after being shown on American Idol and You Tube. When you get to see the video of “If I Can Dream”, it is news, great news, and something to celebrate as an elevation of man rather than the degradation seen in many films, many people would agree.

 

Lisa Presley and Papa Elvis had a duo presentation in 2007 that also had people talking. The Elvis - Celine video is making the rounds through email for those who didn’t get watch it originally, and unlike other email forwards can be, I found this one gives the lucky recipient something. The news was put out on Digital Journal, in 2007 but it’s worth a replay for those who didn’t hear it then and those who haven’t had the experience of getting it by the wonders of forwarded emails at the end of 2008 as it makes the rounds that sometimes takes a year..

 

New technology in music has made new ways of providing it to audiences something that can reach the young, the old and the in-between. We have had all sorts of combos through the technology that takes the voice of the past and puts it together with a contemporary voice in an arrangement that marries the sound of both. The nostalgia of Nat King Cole and his daughter Natalie together on tape made years ago was one of those. The result, when put together with good background and music, reminds folks of the best of the past and the present can be great entertainment.

 

Elvis Presley’s appeal never ends for many, as reflected in the fact that there is a website that calls itself The Elvis Information Network that provides all the updated information and history anyone might want to know. It reflects the continuing fascination and appeal Elvis has more than 30 years after his death. In the 1950’s folks originally debated whether he could sing or not and whether he had any morals or culture at all. Later in his musical career, people began to comment on the fact that indeed he could sing. Now his gospel music is praised in such places as Natchitoches, Louisiana by people in the Bible belt. People here of an older generation can remember the Louisiana Hayride and Elvis’ first music ventures before he became famous worldwide. They play his gospel music video or music CD and sing the songs while they talk of those good old days. Those early days had Elvis plain and simple. His national persona was something other than pure or simple. By the time Elvis died he was depicted by the media as a caricature of himself. Indeed those who loved Elvis and the critics in the industry reported it as sad..

 

I saw Elvis less than a year before he died, at a concert in Pittsburgh. He was more than an hour late, slurred and couldn’t recall some words during his performance; and yet no one there seemed to mind. The moment he came on stage, everyone stood up and I’ll never forget the subsequent tears and cheers as Elvis began to sing. That’s because I was part of that chorus of attention. Folks beginning to gray a little acted like the teens they once were, I suspect. Women gushed and swooned, and men puffed up their chests, grabbed their women and pretended to be part of the animal energy that exuded from the stage all around Elvis.

 

Celine Dion arrived late on my entertainment radar. It took me a few months after her rendition of the “I’ll Go On” theme of the film “Titanic” before I became a fan. But I’ve stayed one ever since. Like Elvis, Celine Dion is seen by her fans in the world of critics as someone who can take a song, define it, and with a voice of musical authority present it to the world of music and her audiences in an original and beautiful way. For others she is just an ordinary balladeer, according to Newsweek that points out the millions of people who buy her recordings.

 

While the world in 2008 wonders about war, the economy, politics, religion and a myriad of issues facing it, here’s one for those who want a little lightness of being, even those for whom this is a repeat. It is great news for everyone who just receives it, who loves Celine and Elvis, a duo that rips in its own original way and should remind many of kinder, gentler days. The video might be seen for them as the very the definition of music wrapped up in an Elvis – Celine bundle as a Christmas gift multiple generations might likely love at the holidays this year.

The new season has yet to start. Its premiere is set for January 14, and the Live Shows would begin I guess by late-February, so if she appears (hopefully) it will be from late February on.
