The spasms are not clear - we still don't know what kind of spasms they are. Let's hope it has nothing to do with her voice. If it is her voice, why the hell wouldn't they mention that when cancelling concerts and shows. People would be a lot more understanding. Or maybe they're worried people would want refunds. Well, I won't translate the whole thing but to make a long story short, her ORL Jean Abitbol (who created a special portable machine with built-in light for her to be able to use it anywhere she is) says Celine is suffering from a psychosomatic reaction called "globus syndrome". It gives spasms, an impression of cut throat, gastric reflux and also difficulties to breath, talk and sing. On top of that she has menopause (guess Claudette was right). out

He also says that she is physically suffering since many years by now but she never talked about it, because of the inclined Vegas stage and the heels she's wearing.

She is taking this very seriously and she is doing what it takes to come back as soon as possible.

Hope it helped :)

Here is an English language link that explains this syndrome :

https://www.uptodate...lobus-sensation

and also, in 2003 she was already talking about esophageal disorder and reflux

Doesn’t sound good. She isn’t going to be back anytime soon.

Yes.

Just like her movie :giggle: But it's a good thing, Christmas season will be good for sales

Here is another writeup about this syndrome. I have never heard of it. But if it is "psychosomatic" that is almost equally worrying and relieving.

Abstract

Globus is a persistent or intermittent non-painful sensation of a lump or foreign body in the throat. It is a commonly encountered clinical condition that is usually long-lasting, difficult to treat, and has a tendency to recur. Furthermore, due to the uncertain etiology of globus, it remains difficult to establish standard investigation and treatment strategies for affected patients. As a first step for managing globus, careful history taking and nasolaryngoscopy are essential. Given the benign nature of the condition and the recent notion that gastroesophageal reflux disease is a major cause of globus, empirical therapy with a high dose of proton pump inhibitors is reasonable for patients with typical globus. If patients are nonresponsive to this therapy, definitive assessments such as endoscopy, multichannel intraluminal impedance/pH monitoring, and manometry should be considered. Speech and language therapy, anti-depressants, and cognitive-behavioral therapy can be helpful in patients whose symptoms persist despite negative investigations.

The most important sentence in that article is "Mais quelle peut bien être l’origine de ses spasmes ? " (What COULD be the cause of these spasms). This is just another article with speculation.

Thank you! Before I got to the bottom of your reply, I was going to say that she mentioned reflux YEARS ago.

No it isn't speculation because this time it's her ORL who gives the information ;). Jean Abitbol is a famous doctor who works with a lot of celebrities including Celine. I think if he wasn't sure or in relation with Celine, he would not say anything, he has a reputation to honor. I could be wrong 'though, but after reading the entire thing, it really looks like he is not speculating.

Maybe Celine doesn't want to say it by herself and she allowed him to tell the press as a spokeperson ? Well after reading your comments I'm starting having doubts...

The translation for ORL into English is ENT. :flowers:

Thank you, never too late to learn :) :) :) sorry for my mistakes in English

It's also not clear when Celine was approached for this project. So, she may not have been ready to sing then, but is closer to ready now. Hopefully.

There's also this article that mentions : "her ENT in person confirms : Celine will come back with an even more beautiful voice because she will be more emotional. To say her voice will be the same as when she was 30, the answer is no. Maybe the range will be different, but what matters is the emotion you put into that range."

But you might be right about speculation because in another sentence, it says : "Jean Abitbol explains "globus syndrom" that she may suffer from and causing her voice problems. According to him, it is due to psychosomatic stress after the last ten years being specially tough for her (loosing her husband and mother)"

They use conditional in this one.

Yes I know about the book :) , but in this case he is not very smart, because if it's not true, he will loose Celine as a patient and will risk a trial for diffamation.

The reason why they haven't said anything about it is that they DIDNT want the press to get ahold of it/Tabloids, can you imagine that headline, Celine Dion can't sing anymore ,ext: that would put the fans really in a uproar, that wouldn't go over to well,

Very true. It would be huge news if people speculated Celine Dion could no longer sing.

Well when she finally would take the stage again, that would create another frenzy.

I wonder if her vocals were starting to go around the time of the pandemic performance of "Smile"
Posted

They’re probably waiting until

The very last minute to determine if she can sing next year. That being said if voice is not there , still at this time there’s no way she could be ready for February. I suspect by early January we’ll know if the tour is canceled. No way she’ll postpone it again. I dunno I just get bad vibes

I doubt it. May 2021 she was extremely confident about returning, had started the whole rehearsal process and in her initial October 2021 statement, confirmed they’d been rehearsing for close to 8 months. I really do think if anything the health issues started around August/September of 2021… otherwise I highly highly doubt she’d have been doing 8 months of rehearsal and prep for a show she was completely uncertain she could do and was experiencing voice problems during.

Oh yeah, I forgot that the "Smile" thing was so far away from her Today Show appearance. November 2020--almost 2 years ago?! Where did that time go.

And I would imagine they wait until the last minute to cancel even if she knew was having issues at the time they unveiled promo. If anything, they could have used her name to sell tickets and promote this new destination/brand called Resorts World. With contracts, she probably didn't have much choice. But then again summer 2021 would make sense as that's when her stress levels might have been rising.

Not sure why this "globus syndrome" point is being reported as news, given we've known about it for 15 years.

Celine talked about it to Denise Bombardier, and it's in her book. I had posted the relevant excerpt here back in April but reposting below:

"Savez-vouse ce que c'est que le syndrome du Globus? demante-t-elle avec de la frayeur dans le ton. C'est ce que j'ai, ajoute-t-elle. Pendant que je suis sur scene en train de chanter, je suis prise de spasmes. Ma voix ne repond plus, elle accroche dans ma gorge."

Is your middle name “dark cloud?” You’ve added nothing but impending doom to this forum since you popped up on here lol.

Translates to:

“ "Do you know what Globus syndrome is?” She says, with fear in her voice. “That's what I have,” she adds. “While I'm on the stage singing, I'm in spasms. My voice no longer responds, it hangs in my throat."

I did not know this, and we should have paid more attention to it as fans 🫢 Have you noticed how in interviews where Celine is talking lots, she really swallows hard a lot? And really sniffs hard as if to ‘move’ something in her nasal passages/throat. Certainly spasms in her voice would make more sense for the entire episode of cancellations etc but I think they should have been more upfront. I really hope she can recover properly once and for all. It made me very sad to see the list of potential therapies and drugs needed. I hope she’s not depressed.
