Céline Dion was one of the most anticipated stars at this year’s Met Gala, and she did not disappoint with her look.

The 51-year-old stunned in New York last night on the red carpet in a showgirl-inspired ensemble. She wore a plunging, fringed silver minidress by Oscar de la Renta with T-strap pumps custom-made for her by Chloe Gosselin.

Awarded with FN’s 2018 Emerging Talent award, Gosselin has built up a strong following in just a few years, counting Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Keira Knightley among her fans.

But with the Met Gala dubbed the Oscars of Fashion, there’s perhaps no bigger seal of approval for a designer than having a star wear their wares to one of the exclusive events in the industry. Gosselin described seeing her pumps on Dion — from the carpool line in Las Vegas, no less — as “a really great moment.”

Below, Gosselin shares how the collaboration came about, what Dion thought of the shoes and more.

How did this collaboration come about?

 

“Céline Dion was one of the first customers when I launched my brand and has since continued to be an exceptional support. She would perform live onstage and bring a heightened sense of drama and new life to my initial designs. After developing a close relationship with her team, they asked me about a month and a half ago to create something one-of-a-kind that was inspired by vintage dance shoes with my signature jewel detail, reworked with Swarovski crystals and oversized crystal fringe. It has been an exciting past few weeks. My team and I were ecstatic about the prospect of creating something truly special for her — especially as she is not only someone who I truly admire but is one of the most kind and thoughtful talents.”

What was Dion’s reaction when she saw the shoes?

 

“Céline and I both live in Las Vegas. I delivered the shoes to her on Friday night, just before she was due to leave for New York. Her reaction was incredible. She opened the box and was immediately in love. I was completely stunned as she used the shoes as a stand-in phone and began to sing “Hello” by Adele. I couldn’t have been more proud in that moment — because the greatest pleasure is when I see someone truly love what I had conceived.”

What went into the design for the shoes? Can you explain the details?

“Céline [and her stylists Sydney Lopez and Pepe Munoz] gathered a highly curated selection of imagery depicting vintage shoes with layers of leather in gold and silver shades. They reached out to me and asked me what my take would be on this kind of style shoe. Céline recently wore one of my new sandals, called Tori, at an appearance, and she loved the jewelry detail. So we thought of integrating it into this completely new idea.”

 

How were the shoes made? How long did they take to construct?

 

“The shoes were handmade in Italy by a team of artisans. Every detail was carefully sewn by hand. We documented the full process, as this was truly a special moment for me and one of the highest points in my career. It took about three weeks to be made — from the original ideas to the first prototypes and the final pair.”

Is this a new style for you? Will you sell it to the public?

 

“This is a completely new design, and it has been named after Céline. Currently, there is only one existing pair of these shoes, as they have just rocked the carpet at the Met Gala. However, we could see them in one of my collections to come.”

And how did you feel seeing your shoes at the Met Gala?

“Because I’m based in Las Vegas and we are a few hours behind New York, I was picking my daughter up at school during the red carpet arrivals. In the middle of the carpool, all of my closest friends, family and colleagues were texting me and tagging me. It was a really great moment. And I couldn’t have been more proud, especially having my daughter there with me.”

I think you (guys) are kinda missing the point. At this moment in time, her career isn’t just in the music bizz anymore, it’s also in the fashion world (and other stuff). All this is nót (specifically) aimed at hyping it up for new music. All this is simply aimed at hyping her NAME and BRAND (and all that it encompasses, including[/], but not only, her music career).

 

Yes, of course, 2019 will in the end be out releasing new music (finally) and the start of a new world tour, but it’s Céline’s career and passion is so much more than “just” music now.

 

This is exactly what ive been saying for months but go off on me, sure

 

 

Of course its building her name, getting it out there to be recognised as more than a recording artist but as a legend, a celebrity, a woman.

 

But its undeniable all of this builds a huge structure of self promotion for new music, but i agree. Let the MET be the MET, it wasnt for music, it has nothing to do with music, let her live her life. However, subconsciously it gets her name in peoples heads, making them more aware when she DOES release music

CELINE DION WEARS CUSTOM CHLOE GOSSELIN TO THE 2019 MET GALA

The Friday before the Met Gala, in an airplane hangar in Las Vegas, Chloe presented global superstar Celine Dion with custom heels for the 2019 Met Gala. It ended up being Gosselin’s favorite Met moment- and it happened before the Gala even began. And for Celine? It was love at first sight.

“To be able to sketch the shoe, see the process of them being made, and then personally hand them off to Celine, it was very exciting”, said Gosselin. Celine had a wonderful (and memorable) reaction to seeing her namesake shoe for the first time. “She took them out of the box and licked the sole of the shoe. Then she held the shoe up to her ear and sang Adele’s ‘Hello’. It was the best moment of the Met for me.”

Styled by Pepe Munoz & Sydney Lopez, Dion wore a metallic-fringe Oscar de la Renta gown, accented by a stunning Noel Stewart headpiece. “Sydney & Pepe have such great vision, so I was honored that they thought of me to help complete it”, said Gosselin. “We all brainstormed together. They were looking at vintage images of dancing shoes with these layers of gold and silver, with dancing curves and super thin t-strap. And then was born the ‘Celine’ style, a pointy pump with the same jewelry, but with breathtaking Swarovski stones that dropped almost to the floor.”

“We actually created 2 different styles, one very close to the sandal she has worn before, but with thinner straps to not cut the leg so they be almost invisible”, said Gosselin. Celine donned the custom Tori Sandal at the Met Gala after party.

“I can’t imagine a better person to embody the ‘Camp’ theme than Celine”, said Gosselin. “Growing up in France and as a closeted singer she was always someone I looked up to. Not just for her immense talent- but because she is a genuine woman, kind and generous. I also love that she plays with her fashion and never takes herself too seriously. It is a rare thing nowadays, humor and humility,” Gosselin said.

“She is the kind spirit of confidence, extravagance and creativity. Being a part of this moment has been such a gift”.

AN INSIDE LOOK: MAKING CELINE DION'S CUSTOM CG SHOES FOR THE MET GALA.

The Met Gala is arguably fashion’s biggest night of the year- but it’s more than just a red carpet or a big party. It’s an opportunity to celebrate art, history, and for designers to showcase their utmost creativity. Chloe Gosselin was honored to be of those designers for the 2019 Met Gala, custom-designing the shoes for Global icon, Celine Dion. Working in coordination with Oscar de la Renta, it was a unforgettable night- and look.

The process of designing the shoes began over a month ago. “Celine Dion had been one of my very first customers and has always supported my brand. I was thrilled when her team tasked me to create this one of a kind shoe. We were inspired by vintage dancing shoes with my signature jewelry piece, but revamped in a Swarovski crystal with oversized crystal fringes”, said Gosselin. The metallic Nappa leathers and Swarovski crystals were matched to fabric swatches of the glowing gown, and sent to Milan to be hand-made.

The shoes took 2 weeks to create, almost completely by hand. “These were more difficult to make than a sample, because they are original and exclusive for a special event and special person”, said factory owner, Lorenzo Valsecchi.

Lorenzo & his team of artists documented each step of the shoe-making process, demonstrating the care and patience that goes into making a one-of-a-kind care.

“Celine knows the importance of a great pair of shoes, how they change the way you stand and carry yourself. She recently wore a pair of my Tori sandals at an appearance and loved the way they looked and felt. The sturdy straightness of the heel, the cut of the sandal, but most of all she loved the dangling jewelry piece. I loved how the crystals moved in coordination with her gown on the carpet. It was a show-stopping moment”, said Gosselin.
